Future of X-plane

At this point MSFS needs a major overhaul to not die an early death and Laminar just need to not screw up a good thing.

All your posts and uploads (Including PS2 screenshots) are an inversion of the truth. MSFS did get an an overhaul. And a successful one which netted millions of users and Sim of the year title. In the 4 years LR spent struggling with a graphics port MS totally redeveloped their whole sim from the ground up! But of course the facts don't matter to you when you can make it all up.

Steam trend charts show XP has settled in at around 1600 average players - this is similar to prior year January 2020 numbers and would indicate a recapture of lost market due to MSFS launch.  MSFS on the other hand looks to have stabilized at around 5000 average players, and that’s without all the bells and whistles (study level aircraft, GSX, etc) available in other sims.  I don’t believe either sim is in jeopardy of an early death, based on data and testimonials from developers.

For Xplane

November 2020 1,393 October 2020 1,288 September 2020 1,285

To:

January 2021 1,662

Is 9% MoM growth since the release of MSFS, or 21% growth since the release of MSFS

Any way you look at it, decent growth.

MSFS had 20,805 uses at launch (actually more like 70,000 peak), and now has 4,894

1% MoM net loss of users is probably waaay to generous, but a loss is a loss..

Prior to that is what to be expected from such a massively hyped release, pilots with questionable qualifications claiming it flies great, choice shots when it actually looks good.

Now both stand on their merits, and their merits alone, doesn't matter if that is steam or gamestop, people are making up their own mind now.

Oh really.... Who won it the year before?

I wish everyone was as devoted to the truth as you are, Greazer. You are my moral lighthouse in these times of turmoil!

Comparing 2 products at vastly different stages in their lifecycle can be misleading.  Let’s see what the data shows after MSFS is a bit more mature once higher level aircraft hit the sim.  A company will evaluate performance against expectations, and no one but Asobo/Microsoft know what those were.  If they expected a 2% month-over-month loss after the initial launch bump, then I could argue it’s been a resounding success so far.

Well, this is why I find it so interesting, if it was the other way around, xp on a 1% decline, msfs at 9% growth there would be nothing much to say, xplane 11 is getting to eol, msfs is just in its growth phase, done.

But these numbers dont support that conventional wisdom, the market is saying xplane is still in growth, msfs has been in terminal decline from day 1. This has significant implications for the future of both, and anyone (including Laminar and Microsoft) considering which platform to invest in.

Uncertainty is preventing me from buying anything further for XP. I need to know roughly when I can expect XP12 to be released. Weeks? Months? This year? 2022? I also need to know if stuff I buy will be compatible with XP12?

That one is easy.

Yes, at least as much as XP11.10 compatible stuff is compatible with XP11.52, devs that bend the dev rules will still need to keep up with the pace of development, which has steam rolled many an XP dev and put many more off - especially those whose business is selling the same thing over and over again under different names.

But Laminar mostly learnt that lesson the hard way with 11.30

Thanks. That's helpful. Because I was looking forward to the BA146 but am put off by the thought I might only get very limited use out of it. (Although the revelation it's going to have the default FMS is a bit of a disappointment).

XP11 still fundamentally supports stuff from XP9, and you can definitely still load XP10 aircraft, 11 even ships with a few (there's a checkbox in the top right of flight configuration for "show aircraft from older versions"), although they often dont work as well as the version they were made for, its down to technical reasons rather than intentionally breaking stuff. Pretty sure the space shuttle is an XP10 aircraft, cockpit functionality is ____ but I'm getting 500fps in space.

A lot of the fun I've had with XP11 has been fixing up old freeware, just not allowed to distribute them.

I'm not worried about freeware. I'll be starting afresh from that point of view. It's the money I may waste from now on that matters.

So that leave the other vital question. When?

Best hypothesis I've seen banded around so far has been a FSEXPO 2021 announcement. I don't actually care so much as long as they fix SSAO in XP11 well before that, that annoys me every day, I'd preorder XP2021 today either way.

When what?  When is XP12 coming out?

There's a timeline, but I'm not even going there.  The official reply is the same as with any other developer.  "When it's ready".
