Winds are...overdone?

Featured Replies

3000-4000 feet , Corsica , but mostly all over the Mediterranean Sea. 60-70 knots crosswinds with gusts. I am not a real pilot but that´s kinda crazy, isn´t it?

Here is the TAF for that region right now.

AF: LFKJ 300800Z 3009/3109 05005KT 9999 FEW045 BECMG 3017/3018 24015G25KT BKN030 FEW045CB BECMG 3018/3019 3000 SHRA BKN020 SCT035CB TEMPO 3020/3109 29020G35KT

I would say accurate at 4000 ft.

If you go to Meteoblue (which they use for WX data) and look at the current wind data that looks correct....some really high winds at 3000'.  Direction looks accurate as well!

I dont think winds are overdone, in parts of europe we had/have strong winds right now, especially western france.

ATIS regularly gives winds that are twice as strong as they really are.  So much so, that I thought it was giving Km/h.  I had to check that my sim was set to US rather than metric (which it always has been).

It's pretty windy in Europe at the moment; it's not unknown to get 200 mph winds over many parts of Europe even at medium altitudes. The Mediterranean area is noted for getting quite windy and turbulent, as it is where the European land mass meets the African land mass and has the prevailing westerly winds off the Atlantic coming into it too, so it is a bit of a geographic crossroads for weather.

As others have pointed out, I would recommend using windy.com to check things against MSFS, and be sure to pick the right altitude on the slider. This can be used to good advantage to speed up your simulated (and real) flights by picking an altitude which has a good tail wind.

Lesson learned?

Check weather sites first before rushing to avsim, making threads about overdone winds. 😉
