But boy, was I wrong. Quote As one of the last remaining airports in the world to land directly onto the beach, Barra Airport boasts some of the most stunning scenery in the Western Isles. With the flight schedule governed by the ebb and flow of the tide – Barra is a breath of fresh air compared to other more ‘conventional’ airports in Scotland. February 17, 20215 yr The UK airport updates are mostly 'interesting' airports rather than massively useful ones for big aeroplanes. Liverpool is probably the most useful one out of those included if you want to fly bigger stuff. Lots of EasyJet A320 and Ryanair 737 flights in and out of the place. Barra is I think unique in being an airport which uses a tidal beach, as you've seen, although technically is has three 'runways' which are basically just sticks in the ground at the end of each one, formed in a triangle a bit like an old WW2 airfield layout. Barton, which is the other small airfield featured in the update, was one of the earliest purpose-built airfields in the UK, and it was Manchester's main airport until Ringway was completed in 1938. Its control tower is a listed building and it is one of the places you can go to in the North West for your aviation medical. Although the airfield is small and has grass strips, it used to have massive airshows (these are coming back incidentally), and amongst the aeroplanes I saw there was a BA Concorde which did a low and slow pass along the runway, so it attracted all kinds of stuff even though not all of it could land there. The pilot of that Concorde was willing to try a touch and go apparently, and he contacted BA to request permission whilst circling, but they said no, so he instead flew low and slow along the flight line. It was loud, but not as loud as the Vulcan which was a regular at those shows too. If you go to 16 minutes on the video below, you can see that Concorde fly-by. More scarily, I had a flight in one of those Bell JetRanger choppers you can see on that footage; a week after that flight I took, that same chopper was doing the same thing and crashed near Liverpool after an engine failure whilst performing another pleasure flight! I'm guessing any Twin Otters that fly out of there have similar airframe options, paint, and maintenance schedule as the seaplane variants. Specially designed for operating in saline and corrosive environments. Hopefully we'll get a good Twin Otter in the sim soon; I see them go over my house every day out of CYWH but it's been almost 15 years since I was last in one. Hopefully we get some good seaplane aerodromes eventually too.
February 18, 20215 yr Handcrafted by Asobo right? The um terminal? I guess you call it 🙂 Nice find, can we get the tide to come in? "Coffee, if your not shaking, you need another cup" Flight Sim Break Discord Channel: https://discord.com/invite/fCV62Ka2QZ
