Well firstly, I hope we get the choice to select either DX11 or DX12 at start up, as there will be some teething troubles with DX12, it is to be expected.

Teething pains...

As a rule, the MFS team ignores what the P3D  has done before them, good or bad.

So the only questions I'd ask in their Q&A show would be  "Are you aware that the P3Dv5 release with DX12 was a horror story of VRAM-related OOM and that the only solution was to downgrade the user graphic settings ? Did you learn lessons from it ?"

What are the odds that my question be selected by the community manager team ?  Yes, I think so too so I get back to clean my garden instead.

There are still only few games out there that has dx12/vulkan from the ground up and this is due to there low-profile nature which requires more engineering time, the API just does less for an app.

However with no doubt a low-profile API is the future, even more talking about the "cpu bottlenecked" flight simulation.

Lastly, VRAM consumption is not an inherit thing with DX12, with a proper texture streaming it should deal just fine with over-Vram consumption situation, it'll require some cpu overhead to transfer the highest mipmap from VRAM->RAM but the great thing again is DX12 MT capabilities hence it can be farmed out to another core resulting in 0fps hit. The joys of not being locked by the cpu.

I have to admit, all the recent comments about "dx12 is mostly for new visual features" makes me think it's gonna be a dx11->dx12 wrap, at least at first. or in other words a low quality port just like other games did it to get a fancy title. honestly it's microsoft after all.

What mod is this?

This one.  Thanks for asking, as when I went to find it, I noticed it was updated on the 18th of February.  A new version I didn't have!

Rob (but call me Bob or Rob, I don't mind).

I like to trick airline passengers into thinking I have my own swimming pool in my back yard by painting a large blue rectangle on my patio.

Intel 14900K in a Z790 motherboard with water cooling, RTX 4080, 32 GB 6000 CL30 DDR5 RAM, W11 and MSFS on Samsung 980 Pro NVME SSD's.  Core Isolation Off, Game Mode Off.

Interesting,,, I just visited the Flight Simulator Blog to look for the latest tree fix file, and I found this...

DLSS will be a game changer for VR, if implemented.

Does anyone remember the hype when DX10 was announced to replace DX9 with FSX all them years ago. Lots of excitement with better graphics and smoother frame rates. Then there was that infamous amazing water effects shot  promised with DX10, that never quite materialised. Did it ever materialise as a massive improvement?

Having come back to flight simming after many years out, is it history repeating itself?. I’m curious too see if the newer DX12 will significantly  improve MSFS2020 because it already looks fantastic. 😎😎

In already optimized coding configurations, I've seen generally a 10% FPS increase if the DX 11 to DX 12 port is perfect. I've seen some things go as high as 20% FPS higher, but that was very bursty and short-lived, more like 10% if we are discussing averages (maybe 15% if you are the lucky one with the lucky code).

I'd be waiting for video cards before I'm pinning my hopes on a "potential" 10% FPS increase.

Edit - Just to qualify the above statements
The bigger help is if someone spots a performance bug / issue while writing the DX 12 conversion or new wrappers. I have heard of 50% increases in performance, but that is not from DX 11 > 12, that means someone updated some performance algorithm while doing the other changes. So it's possible while someone is porting it, they also notice a performance issue in pre-exisitng code that gets fixed, and that could be a bigger improvement.

Its actually sorely needed for VR.

Imagine DLSS trying to deep learn the apocalyptic photogrammetry houses

From my experience with DLSS, it actually makes things look sharper.
