France bans short commercial flights

Featured Replies

I'd love to. Where do I find one? We often travel by train while visiting in Europe and we love it. Soooo much better than traveling by air or by auto. Too bad we'll never have the chance to do it here at home.

Of course it helps that the trains in France are really good, although you do have to suppress the urge to slap someone after hearing 'Attention a la marche en descendant du train' for the 900th time. 🤣

Indeed. It's kind of like the tube in London..."mind the gap" 🙂

It's interesting, for a small size jet 2 1/2 Hrs of flight is about over 500 NM or over 330 NM radius or so out of Paris or any other airport for that matter in France.
Go on Google Earth and draw a circle with that distance from only Paris and visualize.
So, they will destroy all commuter-style or low-cost airlines and all the infrastructure associated with, how many jobs will be lost, all the ramifications just because some corrupt people have no idea of the impact they will create with this.
There are already reduced trains capacity, not running properly, roads will get saturated with cars (polluting) for people to get anywhere, highways and roads will be parking lots, fuel consumption will go high, etc.

Meanwhile, these paid corrupt politicians and activists who get the money will destroy the EU starting with France and turn a blind eye to pollution in China, Russia, India just a few to mention here. Every time when we descend/climb through 10,000 Ft, visibility in these places is not more than 20NM due to pollution and of course, that is OK and no concern.
I don't see any problem of this nature in the whole of Europe down to UAE when we fly.
Even the ex-communist countries in the EU got their ducks in the row.

Why they don't start there where the actual problem is?

Wrong. It's only about flights that would have taken less than 2 1/2 Hrs by train.

Like Chock Said, they have an excellent rail network, I see this as a good thing for France

I do like Planes and I like Trains even more, this creates a great balance 😎

France also manufactures its passenger trains, and those ATR's have a global demand  for them whereas their rail cars do not, so overall this increases their domestic train production but has no effect on those ATR's

Its not Law yet. There's another vote required in the Senate. . It only comes into affect if the journey could be made by train as an alternative in under two and a half hours.

Might be better than hanging about in an airport for half an hour before take-off, taking off your jacket, getting all your electronic devices out and taking of your belt off for security, all the while panicking because your trousers are falling down and you aren't sure if you have put fresh underpants on that morning, spending 15 minutes taxing, possibly getting cancelled due to weather... when you could just hop on the train.

If the trains can handle the increased capacity of course...

Originally the call was to scrap all plane journeys if a train journey could do it in under 4 hours. The airlines complained though so they cut it to two and a half.

Like it or not, there will be more of these measures on the way.

Its you simmers that are to blame with your fancy, powerful, electron guzzling, overclocked computers, all that simming has generated 5 million tones of CO2. 🤣

Can't see how that would work. So if you live in Torquey and need to get to Glasgow you have to do a grueling train journey of many hours. I mean its 16 hours for gods sake. Not good for older people or people with kids or business people who need to get from one end of the country to the other, fast.

That’s why tying it to the length of the replacement rail journey, as France has done, is so sensible. Of course, you need good existing rail service to make this kind of policy effective.
