SU5 is not garbage to everyone

Featured Replies

Measured with a pattern in DEV mode by generating range gamma bars in multiple HDR modes on a TV from Blender to MSFS dev mode, didn't finish, but it's still not perfectly matched up. There really isn't going to be a perfect auto-setting, going to vary based on your TV and display's capabilities. It will look more than acceptable for some OOTB, but some are going to need to tweak for sure, HDR or no HDR.

count me in too overall i had seen some hickups here and there but the performance boost is really nice in my opinion .

by the way im happy that the post has stayed positive so far .

happy flying to everyone else , im looking forward to more hot fixes and improvements ...

Image removed as image is no longer available.

After tweaking, it is looking better for me in regular flying, though dev mode is still a disaster, and desperately needs a new patch. I'm going to try to look at the bright side (pun intended) after I finish finding the proper settings.

It is sort of the equivalent of Ford updating the Mustang to have massive performance and great fuel efficiency but for some reason the new model also only comes with pink fluffy upholstery and the climate control only works for owners who live in New Jersey.

Yes, and the a/c and upholstery are a lot easier to correct than dud performance and economy.

Seems to me a classic case of a major product upgrade that was held to a deadline - the big stuff got done in time but due to priorities a whole lot of smaller problems and regression testing had to take a back seat.  I assume the main reason was that it had to fit in with the XBOX port launch.

With that out of the way I expect bug squashing in earnest - the very quick first hotfix I hope is a sign of things to come.

My specs are similar to the OP and I concur, I've been very pleased so far. There was only one issue with an addon causing the Sim to hang but once rectified no issues whatsoever and performance has been fantastic. Graphics are also stunning. Mind you as it is quite evident it should be played in HDR as that is what its optimized for as it should be. Most peeps only just realizing what HDR is and don't know how to set it up and use it an what to expect, hence a lot of comments about unnatural colors, washed out looks etc. None of these are present if your gear is setup correctly, quite opposite.

Very happy with SU5.

That's not the way to do it. If they want to optimise for HDR, great, go ahead! But provide a different setting for non-HDR environments. The one they had before looked perfectly fine to me,  a tad too dark to others, so tune it a bit, or give us a way to adjust brightness / gamma like other games do.  The one-size-fits-all approach doesn't work well with such a variety of settings, screens, systems...

People are sensitive to hearing about any issues, and I agree this is a big issue.

You made a good point, but even that is not the full issue, the HDR is not mapped correctly, unless I generated the test patterns in Blender incorrectly. HDR or no HDR, the contrast is still a bit weird now.

They do need to keep the gamma separated between the different modes for sure though, regardless.

The "SU 5 is garbage" contingent on Avsim is just a small and vocal minority who love to nitpick every last detail. Sure, the sim has issues, which game doesn't? It's been a year. We've had regular updates and enhancements, etc.

Well let me tell you that I still have an old quad core cpu and before MSFS came out I accepted the fact that I'll be needing a new computer. Lo and Behold, I can't believe this old quad core still kicks a$$, sim is smoooooooth  as it can be locked at 40frames, not a single CTD. Very happy with my old quad and with the fact that I saved $$$$$ on a new pc.

Same here. i7 3930k running @ 4.6Ghz with an rtx2070.  Could not do this before SU5.

DD where was this video taken please and thank you!

With so many negative posts, Id like to share one I just completed.  Flight from KPAE to T82 using the WT CJ4 latest build.  About a 4 hour flight. Vertical sync locked at 30fps and it never dipped. Completely smooth all the way to taxi in after landing. Using Live Weather, high altitude temps were as reported along with cloud coverage, winds and baro in weather.gov.

I know that there are some folks having issues but this is an example that not everyone thinks this build is garbage.  This was literally the smoothest flight I've had in this sim since it was purchased when released.

Great post.

We need to bring over the positives.  You can clearly see by most polls that only a small percentage are having "real" issues.

Yes - so I downloaded SU5 with an empty community folder.  All worked amazingly well.  I waited for developers to update their mods and I have been placing those back gradually.

To date, since SU5 I have had a great sim experience.  The DC6 by PMDG has never flown better.  Loving it.

Half the people in the last poll reported graphics degradation.

I have (2) main PC's here with MSFS and another I rarely use. Even my PC with the 2060 didn't really need the boost unless I am flying in NY at low altitudes (maybe), but it was fine, a bit more stuttery perhaps before, but not that noticeable. My 2080 can almost play 2 games simultaneously now.

The CTD issues are kind of random and some addons broken, but overall it's still playable, but to act like nothing has changed... There is a lot of functionality both minor and major that is a bit quirky at the moment.

For my opinion, graphics have degraded but not enough that I care about it. Trivial compared to the fps increase and eliminating micro stutters. Flying is so much more fun this last week for me. The sim CTD'd the very first flight post update. Cleaned the cache and after that hours and hours of flights with zero CTD's.

I'm guessing the CTD's have to do with scenery, somehow.

I have been lucky and haven't had any CTD's in the past 4 hours of flying, I didn't change anything though, it just cleared up on its own. I think some of the CTD's are state related so clearing cache will help, it just seems after you start more flights the settings get more cleared out as well and things start progressively working better.

I do wish Microsoft would PLEASE add a country or region filter to the store, the store has downright nearly become unuseable. I myself have thought about taking the list of ALL known payware airports and putting them into a country sort. I really am sick of looking at 100 airports in areas I don't fly just to find the one I do want. Sure, you can use search terms like "US, Canada", but it's not reliable since many airports don't specify that in the description.

Yeah, that annoys me too. Same thing on Flightsim.to. And Alaska uses a different prefix than other United States ICAOs too.

I too am quite happy with SU5. The sim seems more stable and the fps has gone up by 15-20 fps. In some aircraft, like the DC-6, I still get low framrates but hopefully PMDG and Asobo can sort that out. The only downsides for me are:

  • Over saturation
  • Tooltips and the blue 'eye'. When hovering over gauges and knobs I just want to see the values (and units) they are set to, with perhaps the description for the item shown after a delay.
For novices that delay could be set to 0 to see the description immediately.
  • "lower image quality". We were promised higher performance and we assumed that would be without reducing the image quality. Personally I am not yet convinced the image quality has suffered, apart from the over saturation issue, but if that is indeed the case, they should have given us sliders to make the choice ourselves.
