do Bing updates get streamed to MSFS?

Featured Replies

Asking this, because looking at Germany in Bingmaps, it looks like they may have updated the maps. Jorg talked about updated Bingdata for Germany for the upcoming WU, but I understood that Bing updates get streamed into MSFS in realtime. Am I wrong? Is it done in WUs only? The same for Switzerland, which looks to have extremely nice data.

Yes, BING updates get into the sim in real time.

World updates are more about hand made stuff or improvements of the base scenery (POI, materials, custom buildings, airports, mesh...)

Bing Map updates do not automatically show up in the sim. There might be some occasional minor updates but in general Bing Maps imagery is updated in the world updates. You can see this e.g. in Switzerland that has all new imagery in Bing Maps but not in the sim (yet).

As for Germany, in a recent interview in a German gaming magazine Neumann said that Bing Maps had new aerial imagery for Germany, probably taken about a year ago. This new imagery will be included in the upcoming update.

No, AFAIK, Bing Maps do not get streamed in real time. The raw Bing imagery has to be post-processed by Black Shark, who perform a variety of steps - color correcting the images (if needed), removal of artifacts like clouds, insuring that images from adjacent areas blend as smoothly as possible at image borders, inserting code to control where autogen will appear etc. I don’t think it is possible that if Bing publishes an updated image on a certain day, that it will appear in the sim immediately.

I don't think so. As others have mentioned, Blackshark AI has to convert the 2D satellite data in Bing to 3D objects, especially the buildings and houses.  From my understanding, the houses and buildings are flattened 2D objects in the satellite data in Bing.  Blackshark AI will analyze the 2D objects, and if it recognizes it's a house or a building, it will convert the house/building into a 3D object for MSFS.  This is my understanding of how Blackshark AI works, but if someone else knows the details of the Blackshark AI process, they can correct me. And then Blackshark AI may do more, as JRBarrett commented.

Yes, the others are right... I am reading this thread now: https://forums.flightsimulator.com/t/bing-maps-updated-how-long-till-sim-updates/404514

No they don't.

They need to be processed first through Azure and Blackshark AI. And that is not done automatically.

They also use outdated Open Street Map data to help generate buildings.

I think Blackshark is used mostly in areas where there isn't any OSM data. The company also makes the procedural models used for the buildings based on WU patch notes wording.

Well this is disappointing.

what are we streaming in real time? The processed stuff from Blackshark?

how are we getting such incredible looking scenery?

where did we get this notion that it’s pulling in bing data? Apparently it is just not in real time?

Disappointing... why?

The Bing data is the base, but what you see, is the finished product  🙂

Bert

It’s not in real-time.

I was thinking it was as well.

but, like you said it looks great in the end and makes me “feel” like I’m really flying.

Ciao!

We are streaming Bing Maps aerial imagery but it‘s not the exact version you see in Bing Maps and thus updates in Bing Maps aren‘t automatically in the sim. They bundle the updated Bing data and release them in the world updates. If I remember correctly they said that releasing every little update in Bing Maps wasn‘t practical with all the post-processing and what not.

I am not sure that is correct.. I believe that they release them when they have them ready..

I would not be surprised if World Updates bring focus to the effort, but that is not the only way that updates can reach us..

Switzerland was updated with all new aerial imagery on bing maps which isn't in MSFS yet, but will be next week with the World Update.
