Clouds Bad Again?

Featured Replies

My experience has been mixed. When MSFS was originally released I thought the clouds looked like a joke, I mean ridiculous. However, I have noticed quite a big improvement over the past couple of updates. Having said that, there are still times when they still look pretty unrealistic. If you are happy not to fly in real weather, then I have found I have created several custom weather themes that look extremely believeable. By changing the coverage and height of couds you can get some quite nice looking skies. But as I say, if you fly real weather, then you have to take what you're given.

Yeah, but surely they just need to add a couple of lines to the code:

IF X Box render clouds at X

IF PC render clouds at Y

I know it's not quite that simple, but I'm sure you get my drift.

Sure, it would likely look something like that.  They may well be working that out right now for release with SU6, or not depending on what their priorities are right now for the entire project.  The 'not quite that simple' part is where the devil in the details lives and we all know how people here feel when they launch a major change without sufficient testing.

same experience. clouds sometimes seen very pixelated especially at borders, nevertheless they are far superior to fsx 2d clouds:) but they can be better.

by and large I find the rendering to be excellent. However it could be improved - and will be as I understand it.

the shimmering will hopefully be one of the things which DX12 can sort out. The other thing I don't like is how the clouds form and dissolve - mostly dissolve - imo its too fast.

This is true.  I reckon a third or even a quarter of that speed might be about right.

If they only adjust the cloud movement about 25 to 30 percent of the current time, it may also help performance on ultra clouds, or maybe at all settings.  They would then have some performance headroom to maybe improve the look of them.

It looks like you’re trying to compare clouds in very different weather conditions. You’ll need to choose a consistent theme if you want to do a good comparison.

After su5 update clouds quality have been reduced dramatically. I dont think this has been performed without knowing, this is related to xbox performance concerns...

When close to clouds they are becoming pixelated, low resolution and strange purple colors bands just like fsx, fs9.

Asobo and ms pls give us clouds before xbox release. I havent bought these ugly clouds.

Yes.  I see the colour banding underneath the clouds that wasn't there before SU5.  Pixilation - not so much.

Here is a video to show you what I see....Look how pixelated and blurry they are.

I thought that was just normal now.  Time of day / angle of the sun affects it for me.  They could be better, but I just run with it.  There are certainly no background updates going on like some people suspect when they say they are good one day but poor the next.
SU5 took some quality away from them for sure and introduced some colour banding.  Performance or quality - it is hard to find a balance to suit everyone.

Something very strange: A game, celebrated for it's outstanding visuals while lacking on the simulation side, gets deprived of the "outstanding" part of the visuals, and the majority of customers doesn't seem to care. You can see thousands of screenshots all over the internet with purple fringes, rasterized color gradients, mushy clouds and lighting, all screaming "post-SU5 MSFS". And let's not forget that it was said in the Q&A's disscussing the XBox adaption of MSFS that it would result in more headroom on PC to enhance the graphics even further. Was that a misunderstanding or limited solely to draw distance? Considering there seemed to be a consensus that what set MSFS apart from its competition was mainly the outstanding graphics it is a surprising development for sure.
