That doesn’t make any sense. That shouldn’t have been needed at all. Any Microsoft account would have worked.

I tried back then logging in with each of two previous accounts and they would not work!  They would work at MS support site and the Windows/Office version of store, but would not work at flightsimulator.com.  This was pre-purchase.  To become an MFS Insider.  Multiple attempts.

Tried to contact MS though the flightsimulator.com site to get help.  No way to do so.  Had to login first. Could not do so with either of my accounts.  So I had to create a new account to register at flightsimulator.com.  I then used (still use)  that same new account for both MS Store and xBox.  So now I appear to have multiple accounts with the MS Store.  My previously established MS accounts are still good and show my Windows and Office history back to 2010 on the Microsoft web site (not Store, website).

Somehow now when I land at the MS Store I am logged into one of those accounts and when there see no reference to MSFS, and no MSFS updates.  Just a large colorful matrix of games to purchase.  Not even anything Windows or Office related.  Odd that I now find that logging out changes the landscape. That without logging back in with any account.  It seems to happen in the background and only clicking the dropdown reveals it has changed.

Once again, I mentioned that I contacted MS about consolidating them.  No soap!

It seems to me that MS/Asobo should settle on one method for releasing updates

Great idea but this hotfix created different experiences among all of us.  So is it multiple methods? Or is it one method with different results?

For me this HF was presented to me like the second example in your message above.  I started the simulator, was notified of the mandatory update, and was directed to the MS Store with no clue what to do.  And MSFS was not in the dropdown for updates.  Not until I logged out of the MS Store.  Then magically it was there. And I had not logged back in.  Other updates have been presented to me like the first example in your message.

You are correct.  This MS Store update process makes no sense!

Over and above the sometimes complex methods of operation of the XBox and Microsoft Store:

Without a doubt, no developer of any software, including the Microsoft Store, has ever been able to
successfully allow for all of the creative ways that its users can find to thwart its correct operation.

The problems are usually exacerbated when the user has done something so creative that they
themselves do not know what it was and then sometimes made worse when they find themselves unable
to successfully apply the suggested remedies.

Why do you need to restart your PC before you go to the store? it seems odd to me, on Steam I start the game as usual and the updates start automatic when they are available, I only have to confirm with as mouse click that I like to start the update, it can not be easier than that.

I had the same trouble free installation as Ian... i did not restart my PC before starting the process. I typically restart my pc after an update if i intend to go flying immediately afterwards to ensure that the sim is "reset/and restarted" so to speak

Just because it's dead simple for you, doesn't mean it works perfectly for everyone else.

This is true.

The reverse is also true, but many of these posts (not including this one) tend to make it seem the problem is nearly universal.

I think its useful information to casual observers that the process also works well for many.

I think I must be among the lucky ones. Knowing that there was an update due I went straight to the MS Store, I did not start MSFS. The up-date icon was already sitting there. The download was  done in minutes and on starting MSFS the installation went seamlessly. I feel for those that are having difficulties. Incidentally the Xbox app was not running.

Just before you click on the update button make sure that the correct directory is selected. It happened to me twice, thankfully it was just a matter of pointing the installation to the right directory.

What I can't understand is why the default directory that the program installs in is like the directory from H#ll. Why couldn't they just install it in something people can find like C://Program files    ? I think this by itself causes a great deal of confusion.

Now we know why Australia chose the US and GB to design a Submarine! 🙂

I'm sorry to say, but this sharing of deterministic pathways to ensure updating of MSFS is probably futile. The various servers for XBox, MS Store, and MSFS all need to communicate with our desktop systems correctly, and it's abundantly clear that doesn't happen in the hours immediately following the release of an update. I have had varying degrees of success in gaining access to the updates using the usual incantations described above, but sometimes it works and sometimes it just pays to come back a few hours later.

To cap things off, yesterday I had a totally new experience. After finally getting the MS Store to acknowledge that an update was available, the update installer halted with the message that I wasn't connected to the Internet, something that was abundantly not correct. So it messed around for about 15 minutes until I got to the main page. Just to be sure, I exited back to the desktop and restarted MSFS, which then actually downloaded the update.

We all know there has to be an easier way, but I wouldn't hold my breath on that one.

So now I appear to have multiple accounts with the MS Store.

This may be where some of the problems occur.

Account creation and management is always an issue with Microsoft, as unlike Apple or Google who require an account before using their OS, Microsoft has always allowed anonymous use. Most users (not necessarily you) have heard of the evils of account usage and have purposely gone out of their way to avoid it, and when they have to, they create a second and third account to get something installed.

I have Microsoft store version and the update was easy for me.  I just started MSFS it said update available so I downloaded it.  Why it doesnt work like that for everyone is beyond me.

I believe it may be a multiple Microsoft accounts issue. Don't know if clearing cookies then logging in with the known-as-the-correct for MSFS account would help or not.

Worked perfectly fine here on the MS store. As it always does.
1.) update is announced.

2.) restart pc.

3.) go to store

4.) search for updates

5.) download and install updates .

6.) launch msfs.

takes 2 mins

Same results here except the 2 minutes part (I envy your WIFI speed), mine about 10 mins.
