I would want to use DCS / il2 / AC / Automobilista 2 / DR / Ride 4 , i really have my doubts these will run efficiently , but you can clear my doubts

Well, if they don't, their support systems are already going to have a lot of trouble clearing their inbox.

DCS is on my todo list

Why? The basic idea of proton is "ignore linux" as a developer and valve will see to make it run in an emulator.

And I'm really, really grateful that Valve uses funding generated from 97 % of Steam users to develop a compatibility layer for the remaining 3 %.

It's still rocky in parts, but Proton works really well by now. The only game that forces me to switch to Windows is Scam Citizen and only then for having a laugh at it during a trial weekend.

Turns out the eGPU thing isnt true.

it has HDMI and usbc which can be adapted to hdmi.

but eGPUs need usbc thunderbolt which it (at least the first versions) dont have.

This thread is only half the Windows 11 size. I'm surprised no Apple fan so far created such a thread for his unique OS. 😄

You know in this modern world we have recycling bins, so may as well have one for apple OS as well. Oh isnt that funnny OS's have them too.

Do remember running windows stuff under wine but that was like 19 years ago .

Gotta try this proton and try running DCS / il2 (I think this was tried last year and it had performance impact) /  Assetto / Automobilista 2 / Dirt Rally / Ride 4 . if these work with multiplayer i don't need to go back to windows.

Arma 2 and 3 i think don't work right ? due to the Battle Eye ? anyone tried it ?

ArmA 3 works really well, but I only ever use it in Single Player. Proton Experienal allegedly adds BattleEye support for multiplayer though.

Basic Proton compatibility info for a given title can be gathered from here: https://www.protondb.com/

Bug reports and problem solving is done here (each title has its own issue thread): https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues

As for WINE, the database may be outdated for older titles, but it still may have useful compatibility info: https://www.winehq.org/

Thank you so much. That is new and useful information to me. I'll definitely  give a try in due course. Especially if it proves to be the case that XP12 performs better under Linux.

Once you've set your boot environment up like that, you shouldn't have much trouble trying out various distros until you find one you like.

I very much doubt there'll be much difference on Nvidia GPUs as their driver code base is pretty much the same for Windows and Linux. AMD GPUs could be a real winner though as Mesa's Vulkan driver is heaps better than anything AMD has on Windows or Linux.

I'm going to give it a go. I have an NVidia GPU. There was a distro mentioned somewhere that installed the NVidia driver automatically and without the grief I encountered when I tried it before. I'll Google it and give it a go.
