Yes? That’s very simple lol. It also saves a ton of time because you don’t need to redownload everything.

What has been key for me is to check the Microsoft Store for updates before the MSFS update hits. I just did so, and sure enough I encountered a failure message with a Gaming Services Update, which rectified itself after restarting said update. Had I not checked, it probably could have caused trouble later on.

I rename my community folder to community_keep and let the update does its thing, it will create a new empty "community" folder.

Once done with the update i delete the new (and empty) community folder and then delete _keep on the original folder's name. 10 secs job, maximum.

Works like a charm, every time 🙂

If there is a bad addon in the community folder, any problem will show itself when you change your community folder name back and launch MSFS.

Seems like a wasted procedure.

Just to remind everyone of the update time so that we can all clog up the servers together - 4pm GMT is usually the time that updates land.  I've a feeling this one may be a fairly hefty download.

On the subject of the community folder, sometimes I empty mine and sometimes I forget to, but updates work fine either way.  Probably best to delete though as an addon or two may be incompatible.

Emptying the community folder seems to be pointless.  Launch MSFS after the update - if no issues great.  If there is a problem with an addon, you will see this anyway after you put your addons back  into the community folder.

What does your procedure accomplish?  Why would anything need to be download?

If you get Addon linker, none of your addons are stored in the community folder.  If after launching MSFS you discover an bad addon, a single click will remove all links to your addons that are stored elsewhere.

It is strange how this myth about updates to MSFS and the community folder keep going.

The only thing you need to do is delete and rebuild your rolling cache before launching a flight imo.

Sometimes I wonder if I'm just lucky or some people have set up these silly, arbitrary procedures for themselves because it gives them a good feeling in the stomach 😄

I do what I always do; wait for the .exe to be updated, start it, update files, fly. Works like a charm.

Sage advice. The cache was causing people's loading to hang up.

What is in the Community folder has no effect at all while the game is being updated, it is after you press "Fly Now" that problems can occur with add ons that are no longer compatible with the update.

Yeah, even if i forget to move my community folder, I always reboot my pc and start msfs without any addons first time.  Then if all ok, I move my community folder back and if everythin ok, that's it, otherwise i have to go through the process of identifying which addon or addons maybe causing issues (and i currently have 120 addons installed for the uk alone).

If you load MSFS and all is fine, you have nothing to do - moving the community folder first will be a waste of time.

Get Addon Linker and a single click will empty your community folder of links to where you addons are actually stored.  Within Addon Linker your addons can be sorted into different categories like Aircraft/Scenery/Libraries etc.  Each category can be further split - Aircraft into Multi/Single/Airliner etc.  If you do have an addon causing problems, you can untick every category except one. Load MSFS and if the problem still exists you can re-tick that category and untick another.  Do this until you find out which category is causing the problem.  This way you can greatly reduce the number of addons you need to check.

This is how I prevent a full reinstall which would take me about a week.

From what I have read around for the past year, most folks will be nervous about doing nothing !

Oh I get plenty nervous doing these upgrades while doing nothing.  But the "anxiety" has nothing to do with my lack of action with regard to the Community folder and EVERYTHING to do with Asobo's track record of breaking core sim features with most of their sim updates.  SU5 and this most recent SU7 are prime examples of that! (as the sim has become basically unusable in VR after SU7)
