Update advice.

Featured Replies

Thank you, Bobsk8.

But I did everything to have the last three updates without problem, but no success.

I had to uninstall MSFS and reinstall-it from scratch.

I don't know why that happens to me. Even one of the updates failed after I had installed Windows again.

Regards.

Why do folks keep peddling this nonsense that you have to "clear out your community folder"?

I have completed every update successfully and never touch my community folder. Why would it matter? That, in turn, some of the stuff may cause issues after the update is another matter altogether.

Like you I never have cleared out my community folder before an update but the suggestion I believe originally came from a poorly worded piece of advice from MS along the lines of IF you experience problems AFTER installing an update, clear out your community folder. This advice got somewhat distorted along the way. However if you have any dodgy old add ons in there, they can of course cause problems which is where Add On Linker comes in handy.

I'd also like to know what causes the vanishing controller profiles during some updates

Simple solution is to install to a folder like c:/fs2020.

When it comes to update temporarily rename it to c:/fs2020_bak, uninstall MSFS, install MSFS from your account on the MS store, rename your install folder back to c:/fs2020.

Finally, run MSFS and point it to c:/fs2020 when it is ready to install updates.

Not sure why some of us need to do the reinstall / update this way.

Cheers

I rename my community folder to community_keep and let the update does its thing, it will create a new empty "community" folder.

Once done with the update i delete the new (and empty) community folder and then delete _keep on the original folder's name. 10 secs job, maximum.

Works like a charm, every time 🙂

Of course this works like a charm.  Just like doing none of the above regarding renaming of the Community folder works like a charm all the same.  I'll keep my 10 seconds, thank you 😉

The update process DOES NOT TOUCH THE COMMUNITY FOLDER.

Just to remind everyone of the update time so that we can all clog up the servers together - 4pm GMT is usually the time that updates land.  I've a feeling this one may be a fairly hefty download.

On the subject of the community folder, sometimes I empty mine and sometimes I forget to, but updates work fine either way.  Probably best to delete though as an addon or two may be incompatible.

Ryzen 5800X3D, Nvidia RTX5080 - 32 Gig DDR4 RAM, 1TB & 2 TB NVME drives - Windows 11 64 bit MSFS 2024 Premium Deluxe Edition Resolution 2560 x 1440 (32 inch curved monitor)

You only need to remove core file changers out of the community folder. If you have any?

Just click update, wait...done...go fly. Dont belive all the boo about how you "should" do it.

Agreed, but the fact remains: the Devs initial advise to empty the community folder prior to updating the sim has brought too may peeps to copy their content for "safe-keeping" -- not necessary.

Just change the folder name, waste 10 secs or, as you wrote, do nothing 😛 From what I have read around for the past year, most folks will be nervous about doing nothing !

Same here...never have, and have had success to date.
