Would you want a nice working C5-GALAXY

Featured Replies

One of the most iconic planes I grew up with was the C5-A living next to Dobbins AFB in 1969. My father worked at Lockeed designing the wings. The plane was like part of our family but it was a very stressfull job for my father as there were many design issues inititially; plus one blew up shaking the house I think during refuling. Lockeed also polluted the crrek behind our house the Nika Jack Creek. The creek would change colors daily. The plane brings back memories though and we loved hearing fly over the house followed by the chase plane. The C-141 was also a part of the family.

X-Plane 11 had mediocre model. IMO. it would be great to have a full quality working C5-Galaxy. I know we have the KC-10 but the C5 being such an important plane, would be nice to have that would easily make me open up my wallet. Plus, maybe we could have loading and delivery missions.

Anyone have any affinity for the C5-Galaxy.

That would be fantastic - loved seeing Bully Beef Express when I was out in the Gulf...

Also looking forward to a good C130...

Actually not. No. Thanks!

Yeah, that'd be awesome.

I'd prefer (in order of preference) an Airbus A400M, C-130 and C-17 (I know there's a basic freeware port of the latter) as they are all flown by the RAF, unlike the C5, if the price is right.

A400M by FBW that'd be great 😄

While I'd love to fly a C-5 in our virtual world...I can tell you they are no fun to fly on!

Flew on this one from Dover to Bahrain in the Persian Gulf back in 1985.  There is a small seating area up by the wings.  Sat there for 16 hours non-stop.  They passed out ear plugs and wool blankets as we were boarding (Didn't think that was a good sign).  Neither the blanket nor ear plugs were very effective.  I swore I was hypothermic after the flight...and my ears rang for a few hours afterwards.  After 16 hours of freezing my buns off......when that door opened...we went from 40ish, zero humidity to 103 and 80% humidity...I thought someone sucked the air out of my lungs!  Welcome to the Persian Gulf! 🤣

You can just make out a GulfAir L1011 actually I think thats a 747....in the background..and an Indian Air Force turboprop of Russian design.

But yes...would love to pilot the early versions from the comfort of my office chair...loved the sound those old engines made as they flew overhead.

While the C-5 flight was bad...my return to the States in a C-141 was even worse.  On the C-5 at least I had a passenger seat....the C-141, they dropped the troop seats along the wall and there we sat on canvas/metal "seats".  They had cargo all thru the center of the aircraft, not even a comfy pax pallet for us. 😞  But I was going home...so the ride was tolerated, hehe.

Flew on a C-141 from Yokota AFB on emergency leave, and had a similar experience. Seats on each side were cargo nets, and the cargo in the center was labeled "Remains of Col. So-and-so's dependent son" which was probably code for stereo equipment. Couldn't land in Anchorage because of storm, and pilot ate my fried chicken box lunch, but i didn't mind...went back on MAC flight, so much nicer that.

All the cargo in the center of my C-141 had these stickers all over them:

Not a good sign...but I was going home....didn't concern me at all....until our stop over in Rota Spain. When we were departing for home, smoke started to fill the cabin. 😵 Then I got a little concerned. LOL.  They did an emergency decent and depressurized the cabin which sucked almost all the smoke out.  I could tell it was electrical by the smell...so I knew at least it wasn't the hazmat about to melt my face, hehe.  Turned out to be a burned out motor in the aircraft's AC system somewhere.  A few more hours in Rota and we were on our way over the Atlantic.  Was I concerned about the aircraft?  Maybe a little...but if the flight crew was ready to take her over the Atlantic, so was I...and did I mention I was going home? 😉 (big incentive for military folks who've been away for six months or more).

I'd love to have a working copy of one of these, and pretty much any of the big transports going back to the '40s onwards. Don't know why, but they really get to me. Couldn't get my various FSX/P3D versions to port over in any stable way so just hoping someone gets one of these out the door.

(edited to add - I got all excited when I saw this thread, I thought it was an announcement!)

C-5 would definitely be cool, but C-130 and C-17 would get my nod first for sure.

C-5 or C-17 would be awesome. But I want a C-130H or J even more.

One of my uncles, a CFE on USAF Super Continental's, cross-trained to become a Loadmaster on the first squadron of C-5A Galaxy crews. Coming from a role of responsibility for critical in-flight control in the Connie, he often remarked about the significant increase in workload for pilots in the Galaxy, the first long-distance transport without a CFE.  The Galaxy was not often used for hops.  Instead it found its home for trans-oceanic and trans-continental flights, and often carried three or four pilots who would spell each other.

It would be great to have one in MSFS 2020.  But let's not kid ourselves.  It was far far from a single pilot aircraft, and very few of us in this simulation endeavor sit side-by-side to balance workload, much less complete simulator flights where three or four of us trade off the airborne stints for such long flights.

OK. I used Fully working too loosely Slap Slap !!!!!

Id be happy with a partially working C5 with a good working AP and a nose that lifetd. No game has done that. The one in X-Plane was poorly made at least autopilot wise.
