SP1 Feedback Thread

Nothing new here, just adding to the data:System: Core2Duo E6600 (stock speed), 2 Gb 800MHz RAM, Nvidia 7600GS 512Mb, WinXP Pro SP2.SP1 tweaks tried:+ lowered texture bandwidth to 40+ core affinity =3 (= 2 cores)Experiences:1. Installed SP1 Wednesday evening. Initial impression was favorable.2. High utilization of both cores: first time I've seen that!3. Thursday I flew for longer and noticed (a) more stutters and (:( more texture blurring. 4. More testing Friday: again, blurries and stuttering. Was my memory of pre-SP1 playing me false? I went back to an earlier system restore point and defragged. I had some blurring, but not as much, and very little in the way of stutters.I'm frustrated. I know ACES has been working hard on this patch, but these two issues seem to be extremely common.

I uninstalled FSX ... then reinstalled and ran it then closed and ran the service pack 1.Now I can actually land at Vancouver at landable smoothness and my frame-rates are staying closer to my locked setting of 19. FLying around Vancouver was mostly at 19 but best of all , on approach at CYVR, my frame-rate was smooth allowing pleasins landing instead of how it was before which made landings not great.I landed in Kelowna BC today too which is where I landed yesterday and I can compare the choppiness of yesterday's approach to today's smoothness quite well.So far SP1 seems pretty darned good!

Wanted to post a shot earlier but couldnt get management to work - just so impressed with SP1 and TP3!Rich

After reading Phils Blog at:- http://blogs.msdn.com/ptaylor/default.aspxI got most of the benefits of SP1 on my rig by removing every single trace of my previous FSX installation and verified that, by using 'jv16 PowerTools' which can be found here http://www.macecraft.com/home/ Then defragged the separate HDD that FSX was to be re-installed on (it likes its own HDD). Fired up my rig, disconnected it from the Internet, shut down my Anti-virus, Windows Defender and my UPS monitoring application and proceeded with the fresh install. After re-installing FSX, I then defragged it before installing SP1.FSX and my system 'Page/Swap Files are now installed in separate partitions on a different HDD from the main Win XP Pro O/S HDD, which has no 'Page/Swap Files' on it at all. WINDOWS seems to be much more crisp and nippy when the 'Page/Swap Files' are on a separate HDD, for further mind expanding Win XP stuff that got my rig in to 'Tip-Top' form for FSX, I downloaded the PDF from this brilliant young man at:- http://www.tweakguides.com/To conclude, may I say; Very well done to Phil Taylor and his brilliant team at ACES, this patch is not the be-all and end-all, but it certainly has made my FSX fly like a bird!!! Well done guys.

Form, is but the manifestation of inner contentment.

Now that's what I'm talkin' about!! Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth, ...Thank you ACES!Brian in PEI, Canada

Well....chalk up another shout-out to the ACES team, my upgrade was completely succesfull and I'm way happy after making a few adjustments. Although I have a few addons (aircraft, X-Class USA, FS Recorder, FSXHostClient) I added SP1 without reinstalling or doing a repar, since I keep close track of my config and files and was ready to back everyting out to complete bone-stock config at a moment's notice. Went smooth as silk....like butter as a matter o'fact. I guess after reading about the blurries it made me notice them too....and I'm glad I did!!! Because it seems even my RTM FSX was blurry, which was a surprise to me but reading about the blurries and seeing the possibilities, I started twidling with a few things (AffinityMask=1, to make sure my P4 HT didn't get threads scheduled on it's virtual second core, good ol' TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=400 which after experimentation proved to the the best, FIBER_FRAME_TIME_FRACTION=0.25, then capping my frames and setting SWAP_WAIT_TIMEOUT=20, same as my frame rate cap, with a medium LOD), I'm GOOD TO GO!My experience is that I bumped only a couple of things up, only having to do with autogen and scenery, but I left my resolution and other settings where they were beforehand... why cancel out the greater FPS gains by making the system work harder and bring it to a crawl again? Got smoooth flights as I dialed in all the settings over Seattle. Flies great and looks outstanding, heck for a minute when I took this shot below, I thought I was looking down at Tileproxy!!!http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/171997.jpgFor the record my lowly system specs are: Crusty ol' Pentium 4 HT 3.2GhZ, 2MB RAM, ATI 1650 PRO 512MB, Track IR 4

Cannot resist! :9 36,8 fps FSX SP1 + flytampa SXM scenery, awesome!!! all to max Quad Core on board! (resized pic) http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/171998.jpg

That seems to be FS9 there. Can't read the frame rates on the first picture, though; second compared to fourth seems something like below 10 to 25 in FS9:(

My personal summary of the (raging, in some cases) debate around FSX - the obvious improvement on the release of FSX was the potential compared to FS9 because of higher resolution, animated water, bloom effects etc. because- many of the graphic horrors e.g. desert in England etc. reappeared, as did strange flight models etc.So to sum up the position of most flight simmers:- those simmers (probably the majority) using heavily tweaked and added-upon FS9's saw a significant decrease in their personal flight simming experince, facing the choice of kicking out FS9 which might lack novelty for them but still gave good performance and satisfying for FSX which definitely was not up to running speed. Not to mention having to rebuy all their favorite add-ons (when they eventually become available)- those simmers just entering the FS experience face the difficult choice of getting a cheaper FS9 (maybe even used) which will run well on an older setup and go on to spend their bucks on the many excellent tried-and-tested add-ons out there, almost guaranteeing a satisfying flight sim experienceORthey can buy the newly released FSX which has great potential but still a lot of performance, graphics and other downsides to be ironed out and then waiting for the add-ons to appear. Of course this choice is much easier if you have a high-end machine but there still seems to be lower than expected performance for some lucky high-end users judging from some of the posts here.----------------------------------------------------We really can't find fault with ACES there, its just the way the market has developed (although they might have improved the land class defaults so that the nice new textures are showcased properly). I bet they were surprised at the mixed reception FSX got.I think Microsoft just touted this product with too much hype, getting everyone's expectations up and making them forget the natural development cycle of FS.It is of course understandable that those guys who believed in the hype (comparing in their own mind FSX not with FS9 out-of-the-box but heavilly tweaked) are now ###### after maybe spending a couple of 1000 dollars, pounds or Euros on hardware upgrades and Vista. But if we see this positively, we can say that:- we have a great FSX experience to look forward to, it will inevitably come with addons and user tweaks pouring in- we still have a great FS9 experience to waste our time on while we wait for the above! So, really no need to be ###### all round! My personal request: please don't shoot ACES for FSX release nor kiss their #### for releasing SP1. Microsoft (not ACES) sold us FSX running on three wheels without a spare and just handed us the fourth (although still a bit deflated). This is a reason to rejoice, yes, but remeber we gave them our money half a year ago!SO no need to go around behaving as if they had the idea of the century because they managed to fix many of the worst bugs!Best of flightsimming luck to all!Sascha:-beerchug

Before sp1 I had the occasional stutter with both default scenery and VFR scenery. To be honest I would have put up with this siuation.Sp1 has given me greatly improved frame rates, up over 100 % in the cockpit view and with generic scenery - trees and buildings etc. What I have now is something very different. With generic scenery I have the much improved frame rates and the sim is TOTALLY STUTTER FREE with the bog standard FSX config file.As an aditional bonus my load up times are down from an acceptable 3 minutes to under 2.5 minutes and re-loads are even quicker. My problem is that when I enable Horizons VFR photographic scenery I get almost continuous stutters after about 2 minutes of flying time. It does not matter if I am flying over the photographic scenery (England) or not I get the stutters if vfr is in the scenery library.I am now clutching at straws. I have turned off non essential services/progs, I have edited fsx config with every available fix that I can find and a few others tweaks have also been tried.I am now p***ed off.Perfbucket has been set to 5 and Procspeed is 4263 in fsx config if that means anything to anyone.Photographic scenery is a REAL PROBLEM. One week from now and I will get rid of SP1 if there is no solution.Help :(

Boy, what a good job you did setting up your system.Looks great.I wish I knew your settings! I have about the same spec.3Ghx, 1650 pro, 2GB, but all my roads look like a jets con-trails.Using installation "default" setting now.I must be off a tweek or so. I get 17FPS but your scenery looks MUCH better. I got a slider(s) off a bit or my video card is missing a critical setting.>Well....chalk up another shout-out to the ACES team, my>upgrade was completely succesfull and I'm way happy after>making a few adjustments. >Ouch. Still no ground scenery shadows. Also, what is the>point of setting texture resolution to 7cm?This was an early tweak for pre SP1. It helped to remove the stutters.B

NOT possible to control AF (anisotropic filter) by graphics card drivers. It is possible to control AA (antialiasing) by graphics card driver in place of FSX application (disabling AA in FSX) but it is NOT possible to control AF (anisotropic filter) by graphics card driver. If you disable AF in FSX you cannot have any kind of filtering by graphics card driver.Windows Vista Business 32 Bit, nVIDIA Forceware 158.18, April 2007 DirectX update, FSX SP1.
