Completely UNFLYABLE after Sim Update 9

Featured Replies

Well I’ve updated to Sim update 9 and MSFS 2020 will not load. I get to the world map screen, select airport and flight plan, hit FLY and it goes to about 95% but never finishes loading. I completely uninstalled and reinstalled and same thing. I've noticed that my community folder is completely empty after the update. Could that possibly have anything to do with this problem. Anyone have any idea’s? Thanks

John Snyder Jr

If your community folder was not empty prior to the update, you might now have a duplicate installation. Apparently when doing updates, the sim update directory path can default from your custom installed path to a default install path. This can be edited if you are checking carefully before hitting the install button for the update. The instal path is shown right alongside the instal button.

I’m guessing this is a MS store version…

This is just a guess tho!

I had this reset of comm folder path after leaving the last two betas and returning to main branch... The first time I didn't notice and had to fix manually. This time I was prepared and checked on update. Anyhow a fix is quite easy and is just an edit of the UserCfg.opt line referencing the packages folder with a stopped sim and a fresh start after the edit. It may need download of updates to the official part of the packages folder again and after all running again you can safely delete the structure created in the default location again.

Cheers T.

I think that's a VERY good guess.

John, where do you believe that your actual MSFS is? When you installed it the 1st time, did you let it install in the default folder, or did you pick one?

If you had picked a custom location, use explorer to look at that folder. See if it has a Community folder there with stuff in it.

This happened to me once during an update. Once I realized that I had 2 installations, I just deleted the new one. Then, I went to the Xbox app and did a "Launch" from there (because the start menu icon disappeared or wasn't launching the sim - I can't remember which). It didn't find it because it was looking for the newly installed 2nd copy. At that point, it started an installation. I selected my custom folder as the install location, and then it figured out all I needed was an update, so it did it. The whole process took me about 25 minutes I think.

If you're nervous about deleting the new installation, just rename the folder and do the rest. If it works okay for you, go back and delete the renamed folder.

Edit = Torsen posted while I was typing. If you do what he says, it will get you back to your old installation. Just remember that you still need to delete the 2nd installation, as well as update your current installation.

That's probably it.

I always double-check where the installer is pointing to.

I think it was Benjamin Franklin who said: Failing to prepare means preparing to fail.

Now I'm totally confused, I'm not very savvy with this technical stuff. As I understand it your suggesting I could have 2 copies of MSFS 2020 on here and need to uninstall one. I'm not even sure how I'd check for that,  as far as I know I have 1 copy on my D drive and that's it. I uninstalled it and reinstalled after this problem started but I'm 99% sure it went on same drive, the D drive. Thanks for all your help guys!

Just try resetting everything back to default, that can often fix things.

If you do have a duplicate instal, the offending installation would very likely be on your C drive where Windows is usually installed.

Try doing a search of C drive for folders like Community and Official.

This is just one idea though, don’t let this railroad your troubleshooting. It is of course possible that you do not have a duplicate instal and your problem is something else. But this will at least eliminate or confirm the suspicion.

Hi John.  Sounds like the google earth mod entry in your host(s) file is interfering with your connectivity preventing you from flying,

Just remove the bottom line from the host text file and then try booting up again. Save the old file somewhere before you change it. It's located at C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

MSFS will boot up if every line in the hosts text file begins with an #.  So you remove any line that does not (will be at the bottom of the file).

# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
#      102.54.94.97     rhino.acme.com          # source server
#       38.25.63.10     x.acme.com              # x client host

# localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
#    127.0.0.1       localhost
#    ::1             localhost

The fixes quoted from @Fielder  found here SU9 - sim cannot start flight

With the number of people who go thru this after every update, this should be posted in Tips/Tricks forum.

Well all good suggestions but tried them all and still have the same problem. Loads to about 95% or so and that's as far as she goes. I'm stumped guys. 😞

How long have you waited on 95%?

Some of this advice here is not good pertaining to what's needed now with optimizations.  The suggestions in this video below worked for me with SU9.

I stand corrected.  The sim won't launch this morning. At the main screen it get's to 95% and stays stuck.  Didn't have this problem yesterday.  Been on SU9 since it's release.

Looks like a reboot of my system solved my issue.  This doesn't look like the same issue John is having.
