My concern all along has been that unless LR have been able to implement some fairly radical optimisations the new volumetric clouds, lighting, reflections and other stuff is going to mean that people like me will not be able to take advantage of these new features because we will have to turn our settings down to compensate for the extra fps hit.

I guess you still missed the point,. that is why, now, because they can, shove a lot of that onto the GPU which is more efficient at doing it, which is why they dont expect any performance change. Im not concerned, have no reason to be.
May 22, 20224 yr Although an upgrade, it still looks like it's trapped in 2015. The lighting just is too "old gen" for me. It's certainly an upgrade from XP11, but I feel they still need more work to make it relevant to todays standards in gaming. I know they can't start from scratch, because that would be daunting and too cost ineffective, but XP needs to start doing something different to compete with modern gaming engines. This ain't it.

Well, TBH I think it looks in some aspects more trrue to life than the competition which, although gorgeous scenery wise can at times look like those tuned shots one can get with the mobile ... I give a lot more importance to aspects directly related to FLIGHT, WEATHER and SYSTEMS simulation than to game-oriented anchors. Each one to it's own OFC... Reading what Austin wrote about the many updates to the flight model as well as weather is all I really wait to try in XP12. Regarding scenery I also look fwd into how the new autogen looks. I know I can't expect MFS but, maybe one day just like it is already possible in ELITE and in Aerowinx PSX, and for those who can't live without MFS-like scenery someone creates a bridge allowing for the use of an external scenery generator so that we can fly XP in MFS visuals, benefiting from the best of two worlds - LR would just have to be able to create a running mode with native scenery disabled, to save useless CPU / GPU cycles and actually dedicating those to more FMs per minute, if that's still the way it goes in XP12 (? ) Edited May 22, 20224 yr by jcomm Flying gliders since 1980 Flightsimming since 1992 AMD Ryzen 5600x, 32GB RAM, GPU Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti 8 GB, 1 TB and 500 GB nvme2 SSD drives, HP 27" 60Hz LED monitor @ 1920x1080, T16000, Hotas from old X52 Pro, Saitek Combat Rudder Pro (2010 model)
May 22, 20224 yr AI traffic wise nothing that interesting it seems. I still remember the claims from Austin about how he wanted to rework it all.. but it appears we'll have yet again to rely on third parties for it, oh well. Rest is good, we'll see once we test how much it looks like XP12 and how much it looks like XP11.something Edited May 22, 20224 yr by Pastaiolo Chock 1.1: "The only thing that whines louder than a jet engine is a flight simmer."

Im sure when you get 12 you will sit there and pick holes in it, lots of so called experts do. You can buy and enjoy or pick holes and be miserable. I would rather the former, and considering you havnt seeing the final product, how can you even think to comment on the lighting. Ive seeing some real bad lighting in the real world. Even nature gets it wrong.
May 22, 20224 yr Also, historically LR hasn't been very good at showing products at their best in their previews. I think the YT videos of actual buyers will be more meaningful than these previews. And, as it has always been the case, XP is generally very open to improvements, even in the visual side. It's more of a sandbox products, allowing users to improve their experience the way they want to, compared to the competition which is a more "closed" product. I do agree that the night lighting could use some work. They've said that has been re-tuned for the photometric lighting engine, so who knows what it will look like in the end. Many of their alpha videos and pics are showing a significant increase in the amount of reflections being drawn. I think that will make a big difference in what people are seeing at a glance. A lo-fi AI flight dynamics engine (as in these countless third party tools) with flight plan support and ATC integration would have been the icing on the cake. 7950X3D + 7900 XT + 64 GB + Linux | 4800H + RTX2060 + 32 GB + Linux My add-ons from my FS9/FSX days

In that case, let's simply hope for the best, both in terms of default and third party AI functionality. 7950X3D + 7900 XT + 64 GB + Linux | 4800H + RTX2060 + 32 GB + Linux My add-ons from my FS9/FSX days

Traffic Global just might be the only thing you potentially might want or need to purchase to be more realistic. Ortho is free and it's obvious from the blog update that they are working to ensure preexisting ortho packs look good. I'm also sure they'll continue to add in major landmarks over time. 12 is looking more and more like a win, right out of the box. Friendly reminder: WHITELIST AVSIM IN YOUR AD-BLOCKER. Also it's not exactly legal. Laminar Research customer -- Asobo/MS customer -- not an X-Aviation customer - or am I? 😉
