It is explained in the last dev blog posts. They have data sources that they need to import to build from it a global scenery using whatever algorithms in their internal software.

This process and algorithms are reworked, more types of data will be added (i.e. water colors, seasons, parks, sports fields, ports, piers, lighthouses, graveyards...) and to depict this new data they need new objects that were last previewed here:

This process will affect what will be placed where=new and updated global scenery using the new scenery elements (i.e. the new objects, ground textures, 3d trees, 3d water...).

Could not find a better way to explain it, so if you still don't understand you should just wait, like all of us, to see the visual and accuracy outcome of it whenever they show it.

They say that they are trying to get it compatible with ortho scenery
That leads me to ask do we need ortho scenery ? I have made some for XP11 and it is very much work to create it but necessary since default scenery is very bad.

Then I wonder what about compatibility with our old XP11 planes ? Will we be able to use them in XP12 ?

Only if you are looking at it. Not necessary for many.

Enjoy. So what exactly is new other than unnecessary eye candy? A 30% fps boost?

Trying to figure out where you are coming from. They have already said, way back in the beginning, even after offloading a lot of stuff from CPU to GPU they are not expecting any increase in performance. You cant add, better clouds, better reflection, more objects moving trees, better fidelity than expect the performance to improve. Bit like buying a porche hitching a caravan to the back and complaining about lack of performance

Wouldnt mind if it came with a Orbx true earth region preinstalled ,  also, we wont need internet to run it correct?

Will there be a demo?

Heh we're almost getting philosophical here 😄

Its more complicated than that.

Because the trees and clouds in XP12 are more performant than those in XP11 - except when they are not.

Similar/same to enhanced skyskcapes/cloudscapes (vulkan ES gets me about triple the framerate to openGL 2D cloud art....): dev blogged here

https://developer.x-plane.com/2020/11/stuff-we-are-working-on/

So in some situations it will have awesome perf, others will need work because they are new. The low end performance will need better hardware (since XP11 can get OK perf on a pos GPU from 10 years ago, XP12 wont even run on 80% of windows PCs sold in 2021).

Of course we look at it. A VFR flight is about precisely that and even a IFR flight sometimes has the need to look at it for example during landing.

Better scenery data all around(compatible with orthos), improved flight model, significantly improved weather system, improved/fixed ATC, water physics, in addition to all the graphic updates.

Most likely yes, unless they rely on third party plugins like an older version of SASL, which may stop working in XP12.

Then I doubt I will be able to run it.  Already if I have 10 AI planes, turn on shadows, put reflections on high and load up the  Zibo at Heathrow it's not exactly fluid. RTX2070 & i7 10700

The sources they use to place autogen and foliage. In this case they are now worrying about climate data. Hopefully they will be a bit more realistic with building/autogen placement. It's silly seeing dense rows of houses out in the middle of the forest, especially when the ortho says it should be a single farm house.

They have a new screen-space renderer. And FSR. You may be surprised what works on your hardware. That's not exactly a wimpy setup, either.

Friendly reminder: WHITELIST AVSIM IN YOUR AD-BLOCKER. Especially if you're on a modern CPU that can run a flight simulator well. These web servers aren't free...
