GPU memory with new study level addons

Wondering if the PMDG and other aircraft have led to changes in memory recommendations for GPU? I see 3080’s on Newegg with both 12gb and 10gb. Either should be sufficient?

I wouldn't buy anything with less than 12 at this point especially if you intend to keep it for 3+ years.  My 8GB 2080 Super runs out of VRAM all the time at 3440x1440 even without the Fenix/PMDG in high detail areas.  Especially high detail airports.  That freeware EGKK for example, but also Macco's EGCC pushes it and the handcrafted KATL from one of the WU's or base sim (forget which it is).  That with Texture Resolution on High as well, not Ultra.

my 3080 ti (12gb) runs out of vram running at 4k with the graphics settings cranked up and running 8k liveries w/ the Fenix and its high res cockpit textures option. i absolutely would not buy any card with less than 12gb at this point, as the vram usage is just going to continue to climb over the coming years.

Thx for this. Sounding like even 12gb might not be enough in a year or two…

Im running a 12G card (3080ti) on 1440p and I load the VRAM up to max no problem in MSFS, even with sometimes moderate setting.

It depends on your monitor resolution.. 😉

And also the settings in the sim perhaps? If someone wants to run 4K with maxxed out everything (does being able to count the airframe rivets in flight really matter?) no card will be able to meet those requirements.

this is true, of course - but what's also true is that 4k or other high resolutions (like 3440x1440 ultrawide) are becoming more and more common. this is especially true as GPU power has increased to the point where 4k, for example, is no longer an impossibility with high settings - and this will also only become increasingly the case as GPU power grows.

I was thinking a 4k TV. I’m coming from 2k so it’ll be a big improvement I think even if settings aren’t maxed out, but for that kind of money I want to have a good picture.

I think that's an excellent choice. Got an LG CX OLED myself, and ever since I just wanted to test how MSFS was on it over a year ago, I haven't been able to return to my monitor.

But a 3090 is a little over my budget. 😞

A 3090 card is not realy supported because from any game or whatsover, never seeing more than 13 to 14 gig VRAM can be loaded.

So this is a waste of money IMO..

If you using a 3080 with 12 gig you on the best boat ( you dont need to set everything to ultra ) but shure it works fine for 4k.

So a card that would give you 14 gig would be the best choice but as far as i know there is none.

Maybe the upcoming 40XX cards but they need ( what i read about ) a lot Power ( up to 600 Watt ).

This is getting stupid i would say..

cheers 😉

Well 600 watts is for the RTX4090 .  Slightly saner cards will not be quite that crazy with the power draw.

The only reason to go above 12GB at present is if you are intending to buy a Pimax or Vive Pro or some other super hi res VR headset.

Are you running all three 4K monitors off your 8gb 3080?

I haven't had GPU memory running out on my 8 Gig card since the early alpha versions of the sim. More RAM couldn't hurt though. I run at 4k - 43 inch TV.
