Dave, are you really suggesting professional meteorologists don't know the rules about placement of instruments. Really??

I think Dave is making a fair point...a temp measured anywhere in the proximity of thousands of hectares of asphalt heat sink is likely to be higher than above more heterogeneous adjacent terrain.  The measurement of temps at an airport are important for aircraft performance purposes, so airports tend to have fairly sophisticated and automatic weather collection/reporting facilities--and nearby municipalities often report the airport temps as their own.  If I pull up the temp for Colorado Springs near me, I get the temp reported at the airport, which is usually a few degrees warmer than what my own weather station reports (I've had it calibrated, and a few degrees is well outside the expected error).

As far as simming goes, this topic has brought me back to the 744 QOTS. I'd been flying the Aerosoft DC-8  quite a bit recently and love it, otherwise my defualt PMDG 777 with 3 aux tanks for the really long long hauls. But they get quite boring actually. I love the preflight phase in the 74, as you add passengers it heats ups more. I've given quite a few of those virtual pax heatstroke these past few days. I'm so used to the 777 packs coming back on after engine start. I keep forgetting to turn them back on in the 74. Holding short at the departure runway wondering whether I should turn some packs off, I realize they've been off all along, a quick check and the cabin temp in some segments is something like 47C.

The highest temperature recorded so far is at Coningsby, Lincolnshire. About 100 miles north of London.

In summer, KCGI airport met station is typically slightly warmer than the weather reporting station at our local TV station, located about 4 miles away.  I have always thought that it is because of a "heat island" effect with all of the concrete at the airport.  I know in St. Louis the heat island effect is real, in the City in summer it is usually warmer than in the areas a few miles away.

I notice places like Lincoln, and Thetford are presently (evening time in the UK) still really hot, and I can see the front (is it a front?) separating eastern and western UK.   I see the winds in eastern england heading from due south, southeast.   Sounds like you all have a "pineapple express" of your own going, except it's not moisture-laden warm air from Hawaii -- instead it's Saharan heat.   Or certainly continental heat from France.

It was also 39.1 in the village of Charlwood. I recall Coningsby 40 too. Surrey 39 too.

And of course we've not had 40 at Heathrow before.

Heathrow is currently 32. Greater London is currently 32.

Birmingham airport is 32. Solihull is currently 32. Birmingham Airport is in Solihull.

The fact that there's "lots of asphalt" at Heathrow Airport isn't relevant. What's relevant is that the same monitoring station has been active for a very long time, and never recorded 40 degrees before. Its also not  relevant because other places in the UK " that aren't airports"  have also matched those tempretures.

32-40 is probably pretty similar to here in NJ right now and sure enough, I have an excessive heat warning from the local news (who is reporting from the pool) and the National Weather Service for an excessive heat warning until tomorrow night.  So it's not just over there, we do the warnings over here as well, it's just prudent.  According to the news it is 93-97 the next two days.

From my weather station outside:

Pool temp is 88F without the heater and that is 44,000 gallons so a large pool.

Air temp is 104.1 in the sun, 94.5 in the shade, feels like is 109.6 in the shade and 118.1 in the sun.

Interesting that while the temperatures vary by 10 degrees sun to shade the feels like varies a consistent 14F in both...

My office with 11 screens is 73.9F 🙂

But the readings from these stations have to be acceptable to the U.K. Met Office. Does the same apply to the US equivalent? It just so happens that weather stations are located at airports because they serve a dual purpose but there are plenty of other ‘official’ stations elsewhere in the UK such as the one at Charlesworth - a few miles from Gatwick.

Bear in mind local topography can influence temperature. There are notorious “frost hollows” around England where due to the station being in a slight hollow and sandy (not clay) soil the temperature can be quite a bit lower than other stations.

Coningsby is a small RAF airfield in the Lincolnshire countryside. I doubt the single runway and few taxiways plus apron aren’t affecting the station housed in a Stevenson Screen.

I have an indoor-outdoor temperature gauge and the outdoor sensor is on a post in the shade in my carport.  It's now reading 109.7.  Inside it's a comfortable 80 with the AC going.  Our weather station at the airport is reporting 105 right now.

I wonder how many Brits are going to buy window air conditioners to prepare for next time.

The tires are worn.  The shocks are shot.  The steering is wobbly.  But the engine still runs fine.

Is the TV station’s equipment inside a Stevenson Screen?

Yes, it’s a weak cold front. It’s passed through my area now but the temperature remains quite high although the wind from the west is much cooler. Further east the wind is still from the south.

The heat originated in North Africa hence why it was so hot. Although it’s a weak cold front the change of wind has helped freshen things up.

Not this Brit. Too few hot days to justify the expense.

Well, Ray, if these hot spells become more frequent you might change your mind.

That's the fog you see in the morning caused by upwelling a few miles out in the Pacific.  At 66 degrees I turn on the heat.  Mostly cloudy??  What's that?

Kew Gardens reached 38 degrees I believe. No Asphalt, just grass and trees.

38, 39, 40... is less important than the fact that the same station , in the same location, that's been operating for a very long time has recorded record temps.

Heat? What's that? Today here in sunny South Africa, it has been raining for over 12 hours (at last!) and I see 12.9C as the outside temp and 99% humidity. My water tank is almost full, just as well as our local dams are nearly all empty.

I noticed on the BBC weather this morning that Kew Gardens actually reached 40.1C. It seems that the highest temperature (40.3C) was recorded at Coningsby, Lincolnshire.
