Dedicated Drive for MSFS 2020

Recommended Posts

Just wondering how many of you have a dedicated drive just for MSFS 2020?  I've thought about it myself and I think I'll get a drive just for the sim.

Regards

I just recently did it. Moved MSFS to a 2TB Samsung 980 Pro. The other drive was SSD also but smaller and I was running out of space, so perhaps a small performance difference but it's all on a larger dedicated SSD now.

The ability to remember where all you stuff is stored on what drive, can be the deciding factor. I sometimes run into that "where did I see that??" moment.

Prior to my latest build I had win10 on one partition, MSFS on another. On the same SSD. Not sure if there’s any significant performance to gain from this. Now I’ve got everything on a 2TB SSD.

I doubt there is a performance gain... but separate drives are easier for backups and general housekeeping..

I never planned on doing it, but I'm getting close to filling my one terrabyte SSD (100 GB left) with MSFS & addons only.

Luckily, the Addons Linker allows you to store your addons anywhere, like on an additional 1 TB SSD..

Or you could do some decluttering 😉

I'm not sure how many hard disks my main board can use at the same time. I have two SSDs (one 500 Gb for windows and work stuff and the 1 TB one) now.

I have MSFS on its own drive, a 1TB SSD.

When I rebuild I'm going to put it on an M.2 NVme drive.  Currently, I have the OS on an NVme drive and.. I think P3D

Most can handle six Sata drives..

I thought 500Gb would be heaps. Went through 400 in no time. Now I'm on 2TB and one day that might fill up. -- Who would have thought! A big addon scenery in FSX was like 200Mb.

Just using a single 1Tb NVme SSD now.  Used to do the 10k Raptor drive in RAID thing BITD, too much hassle now to manage multiples of everything.  I do have generic 7.2k drives for bulk storage still.

Nowadays with fast m.2 NVMe drives I like everything on one big drive--which is a 2Tb and as I only use this PC for MSFS and Ghost Recon: Wildlands I have mega room for expansion, and makes cloning/imaging uncomplicated.  In fact I make a full clone on an identical NVMe 2Tb every 6 mo or so in case of catastrophic failure.
