I had a new PC with a 3080 for a while and coming from a 1080, I must admit it was very disappointing. It was a stutter fest and barley made a difference at 4K (I ran my 1080 at 4K). Sure, it had slightly more fps but was actually more stuttery than my 1080 card. I had to return it due to technical issues I had with it, got my money back and swore I'd wait. Now I'm waiting for the 4000 series. I've been tempted by the HP Omen 3090 with a 12700k for $2799 recently, but have said nope, what's the point? If in 4 months there is a 4090 in existance, at those prices, even with a discount, well that's just stupid. Sorry you had such issues with your 3080 and completely understand that can happen. August 18, 20223 yr There are a few relevant unconfirmed rumours kicking about: the 4080 (due October/November) and later 4070/4060 may possibly be intentionally delayed to allow NVidia to clear a backlog of 30xx overstock if the 4080 is actually 80% faster than the 3080 (as rumoured) it will be substantially quicker than any overclocked 3090 the 4080 is rumoured to have 16GB VRAM Edited August 18, 20223 yr by Glenn Fitzpatrick

It appears the 4080 16 will be able to smoothly run MSFS 2025 at the time of its first release! Now that is REAL progress! Unless systems containing a 4080 are regulated out of existence due to lack of "green-ness"..... Perhaps waivers will be available in areas that experience winter weather extremes..... i.e. ability to contribute to home heating... Just humorous jest on my part! Meanwhile there is another batch of rumours claiming that nVidia may have found the high power consumption of the new cards unworkable and may be substantially nerfing the performance in production models to get it back to a sane level. Indeed, it's true if my 3080 had worked great I would have a different opinion. But I think in the context of the new cards coming soon and MSFS being performance heavy in certain locations, and given the still rather ridiculously high retail prices, I'd still wait the extra few months. Unless of course I saw a 3080 for let's say $400. I do see your point though.
August 18, 20223 yr ASUS are holding a virtual show next week 23th and others are lining up to do the same, I don`t think Nvidia will delay to long they will not want AMD to launch next month without competing. Raymond Fry.

August 26, 20223 yr I have a 3090 Strix and a 5800x3D (which I just got) and the 5800x3D provided a good boost in FPS. But I'm still main thread limited around photogrammetry and most major airports. Only when I'm looking at the sky or the horizon is my GPU really owning the sim. It really makes me question if upgrading to a 4000 series card would make much difference at all. I'll still be limited by the CPU in most areas where graphics matter, and where it doesn't... well, I'm already over 60FPS. I don't need more FPS where it doesn't really matter 😄 I think I would be better off to keep throwing money at CPU upgrades for at least the next gen.
August 27, 20223 yr Hi, I am wondering were is this window of opportunity ? I am looking at a 3060ti and the best price I can find right now is 529€ which seems to me above the normal retail price ? Seems not a yet a deal to me 😉 Pierre
September 4, 20223 yr I'm currently on a 3080 FE but considering either a 3080 12GB or 6900XT if the prices come down far enough. I'm pretty happy with the 3080 performance as I'm pretty much always main thread limited with my 5900X but do see me being very close to the 10GB ram limit at times. I'm contemplating the switch to the 5800X3D and a small GPU upgrade. Has anyone experience with the 6900XT in MSFS and if so has it been stutter free as that was one of my concerns with the AMD card over Nvidia. I'm not too fussed on the upcoming new cards at a premium given their power requirements, especially with main thread still seems to be the biggest obstacle. Ryzen 9800X3D, RTX 5090, 64GB, Win 11. Prices are starting to drop through so keeping an eye on things as I got the FE as RRP so would find it a cost effective upgrade even if the performance gain isn't particularly much. September 15, 20223 yr Huge price drops - I picked up a EVGA FTW Ultra 3090Ti for CAD $1500 today (including taxes). That card was more like $3000 a few weeks ago. Even if the 4090 is twice as fast, this card is pretty good at this price, and I can defer my upgrade plans to next year. I'll probably switch my entire platform (CPU/Mobo/RAM/SSD/GPU) next summer, but till then the 3090 Ti should do the trick

I have been buying GPUs since the Riva TNT2 and I've seen all manner of launches so it's not necessarily guaranteed what will happen with the previous gen. But I take your point and generally agree with you. Any buying decision is of course a personal decision, and what's "overpaid" to one person, may not matter that much to another. If you want to wait and see, and try and get the best bang for your buck- that's perfectly sound advice as well. For me personally, a couple hundred bucks one way or another doesn't matter so much now - but it certainly did matter when I was younger/less established in my career. As long as you have fun and don't dig yourself into a deep financial hole, it's all good.
