August 17, 20223 yr I'm on the fence. If I'm going to spend another $1K on a GPU, I'm thinking of waiting for the 4000s. I know I'll be mad at myself for jumping on a 3000 right after the 4000s come out. Besides, I've already bought a 1600W EVGA T2 PS for my next PC, and it should be able to the power requirements of the 4000s like falling off a log. Clearing the shelves to make room for the 4K series. In the old days the bitcoin miners would buy up all old stock. Now with the active provisions against coin mining in the cards not so many buyers hence the current glut in cards? -B Edited August 17, 20223 yr by btacon
August 17, 20223 yr Question for the 3090 Ti owners. Is there anything that brings this thing down to its knees in MSFS? I want a new GPU, but I’m not going to spend who knows how much on a 4xxx series if 3090 Ti is optimal. Edited August 17, 20223 yr by Drumcode Jacek G. August 17, 20223 yr Interesting... Reading this sent me off in search for a current price for the 3080 12 GB I paid $879 for back in February from Best Buy. The card is the GIGABYTE - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 GAMING OC 12GB 256-bit GDDR6X Graphics Card with 3x WINDFORCE Fans. I could not find one in stock anywhere. B&H shows a price of $799 but no stock. Most other sources are at or above $900, but no stock (Amazon, NewEgg, EVGA, etc.). ?Have they stopped production already? A price drop may only be news if a particular GPU's is available. August 17, 20223 yr I have a 3090 (not Ti) and I think it's good, but it really benefited from my CPU upgrade to the 5800x3D... before that, was often main thread limited, and the GPU wasn't working that hard. I guess with this game, you can't just throw GPU at it for more FPS.

( 100LOD and not everything on ultra). Getting around 40fps. So you should wait at least for a 4080.
August 17, 20223 yr The thing is that all of the top-end cards of each recent series are magnificent and powerful pieces of hardware. The manufacturers love to see the "I am on the edge of my seat waiting for the XXXX series" comments but in fact, the 1080 ti is a remarkable card that will display MSFS extremely well. The 1070 and 1070ti will do the same, so there is really no need at all to rush to a 3090 and certainly not a 3090ti if MSFS is the only reason. Even at heavily discounted prices, they are both very expensive items.

Hey Chris, Do you have any complex aircraft like the Fenix or PMDG and if so what sort of fps can you get with high to ultra settings? (Maybe you're already running ultra) I am curious to hear where your main thread timing sits in comparison to your gpu. I find with my PC both main thread & gpu sit around 18ms in 4K Richard i7-12700K | Noctua NH-D15S Black Version | MSI Pro Z690 - A | 32 GB DDR4 3600 | Gigabyte Gaming OC 4090 | 1TB WD Blue NMVe (MSFS 2020) | 500 GB WD Black Gen 4 NVMe | 4TB WD Black Conventional | Fractal Design Torrent Case | Seasonic 1000W Gold Plus PSU | Thrustmaster Boeing Yoke | Honeycomb Throttle | Airbus Side Stick | Virpil Rudder Pedals | Sony X90K 55 Inch TV |
August 17, 20223 yr Unless your on a 4k monitor with less than a 2080ti I would be saving the pennies for the best performing cpu i can get for my budget. For me this is a CPU upgrade year my monitor is a 3440x1440p ultrawide and my 6800xt runs it without a problem and it is also highly overclockable. What i want to work on is unlocking my full GPU potential with a decent CPU upgrade. So my fingers and toes are crossed that AMD has one more party trick later this year with a new 5900X3D so i don't feel guilty giving up 4 cores if i go with the 5800X3D. Or if the price is right ill sell the entire rig and start over. August 17, 20223 yr I had held off building a new PC for over a year due to the GPU prices thanks to the crypto stupidity. I finally ordered parts and built a new system 3 weeks ago and very happy with the prices and rebates on some of the components. I went with an EVGA 3080ti FTW and paid $1070 which I thought was fair. I had waited long enough so did not want to sit and wait for 40xx cards and can always upgrade the GPU in a year or 2 which is what I tend to do anyway. August 17, 20223 yr Only buy now if you really, truly need to (like your PC broke). Otherwise wait until the 4000 series. I had a new PC with a 3080 for a while and coming from a 1080, I must admit it was very disappointing. It was a stutter fest and barley made a difference at 4K (I ran my 1080 at 4K). Sure, it had slightly more fps but was actually more stuttery than my 1080 card. I had to return it due to technical issues I had with it, got my money back and swore I'd wait. Now I'm waiting for the 4000 series. I've been tempted by the HP Omen 3090 with a 12700k for $2799 recently, but have said nope, what's the point? If in 4 months there is a 4090 in existance, at those prices, even with a discount, well that's just stupid. Edited August 17, 20223 yr by steve310002
August 17, 20223 yr If you're running 4K then a 1080ti isn't quite up to the task, or, more accurately I'll concede that it is only barely adequate at least with P3D and MSFS. In my opinion the 1080ti was a beast of a flight sim card as it is viable even today as Reader points out earlier in this thread. But outside of that (1xxx series card)...if I were running a 2080 or similar, nvidia would have to HEAVILY discount a 3xxx card for me to purchase one at this point in time. But then that's their goal, clear the inventory. I now own an air-cooled 3080ti and I can tell you, if I buy a 4xxx card I'm most likely water cooling it. My 1080ti had a waterblock on it and I was pleased with its thermal performance. The air-cooled 3080ti I have is a space heater even though I have underclocked it a bit. I can't imagine what a 4090 would be like. I can pull the side panel off my NZXT case, and direct a Patton fan into said case, and drop the gpu by about 10C during a flight sim session. I may have to rebuild using my old Silverstone Temjin case, which has a fan directed over the cards... The NZXT case is nice to look at, but the old Silverstone Temjin was a little better for my purposes...(flight sim). Rhett 7800X3D ♣ 96 GB G.Skill Flare ♣ Gigabyte 4090 ♣ Crucial P5 Plus 2TB

The 12gb 3080 has benched great in most tests, and beyond that with price factored in. BTW, I am much more than satisfied with my EVGA 3080 12gb w/Windforce fan design. The fans really rev up during MSFS sessions so I moved my CPU case to beyond then end of my desk (it was previously under the desk), but I am flying the Hjet with MSFS settings at true 4K on mostly Ultra with Terrain LOD set to 200, LOD at 100, and smiling at fps from high 40's to mid-high 50's. Then I switch to V-Sync, 30 fps, 400 T LOD, 200 O LOD, toggle off the shift-z mod, and just fly...... and smile 🤣 I just noted the EVGA site itself is now showing availability of some 3080 12gb models.
