October 14, 20223 yr The fourth battery for my HP calculator just arrived. It's an HP 11C which I bought in 1982 or 1983. My Weather Flight Commander was an engineer for HP and he got it for me with his employee's discount. I forgot how much it cost. It's probably the best value for anything I ever bought. It's been my desktop companion for 40 years or so. And 10 year battery life ain't too shabby. Noel The tires are worn. The shocks are shot. The steering is wobbly. But the engine still runs fine.
October 14, 20223 yr Administrators This was my first calculator. Since I worked for Singer Business Machines (Friden Division) back in 1972, I got the employee discount! Cost me $84 back then. October 14, 20223 yr I have a 12C that I've had since 1982. I installed the third set of batteries two weeks ago. Granted, I don't use it much these days, but three sets of batteries in 40 years? Unbelievable. Intel 10700K @ 5.1Ghz, Asus Hero Maximus motherboard, Noctua NH-U12A cooler, Corsair Vengeance Pro 32GB 3200 MHz RAM, RTX 2060 Super GPU, Cooler Master HAF 932 Tower, Thermaltake 1000W Toughpower PSU, Windows 10 Professional 64-Bit, 100TB of disk storage. Klaatu barada nickto.
October 14, 20223 yr I have an 11C that I bought in 1979. I placed the sixth set of batteries in it back when the pandemic was just beginning. For the first few years I used it incessantly to code CNC machine tools... the type of work done on a computer using dedicated software these days. I'd go through a set of batts every year or two back then. A couple years after I bought the calculator I paid a woodworking friend to make a case for it. He chose a wood he called "African Teak", and it is hard!! I lined the case with soft foam, and my 11C has served me well in some rather nasty environments ever since. One of the things that impresses me the most about the calculator is the feel of the keys... banging on them throughout much of my adult life yet they are still the perfect "touch" they were when new! A quite impressive product and one of my prized possessions!
October 14, 20223 yr Author Do you still have the Singer Charlie? 9 minutes ago, lownslo said: A quite impressive product and one of my prized possessions! Agreed. And when I go I'll leave it to my great grandson. He might get as many years use out of it as I did. Noel The tires are worn. The shocks are shot. The steering is wobbly. October 14, 20223 yr I've still got one of the early programmable HP calculators (HP-41CV) in active service here. Dang thing takes four "N" batts, though. Indeed, my son is in a completely different profession than I and has little need for a calculator. But he wants my 11C when my time comes because he knows how important it is to me. Edit: Just found a used 11C on Amazon for $300. Not bad considering how long ago the product was first sold! Edited October 14, 20223 yr by lownslo
October 14, 20223 yr Moderator @charliearon I think I have you beat. My first calculator was a “Little Professor” 😂😂 Wonder how many kids under 10 have calculators these day?
