January 26, 20233 yr My homebrew head tracking using Open Track freeware is excellent. Actual TrackIR users who watch my streams tell me it's far better than their Track IR. They're also jealous that I can start it after starting the sim; apparently that doesn't work with Track IR? Dunno... But I'm not sure it's necessary to feel like you have to buy the actual Track IR for good head tracking. If you don't like tinkering, any of the prepackaged solutions like Delan clip that use Open Track can perform at least as good, for considerably less... Andrew Crowley
January 26, 20233 yr Reading the comments about the lack of 'adjustability' with Tobii compared to TrackIR, I never found my personal sweet spot with TrackIR, and I wonder if that is because there's too much control over it. I was always tweaking, in the hope that somehow I would overcome the difficulties I had with it. In the end, I found that disabling everything except pitch and yaw ( in effect, emulating a POV hat switch only ) gave me the best results. For all its sophistication, I found that dumbing it down and only employing 2 of the 6 DOF made it most comfortable to use - at least in small cockpits where the instruments are close by, and I don't have to look closer at things Tobii certainly doesn't have the range of adjustments that comes with TrackIR software, but I've found it much easier to arrive at a set of sensitivity curve values that suit me for all aircraft, and that is while retaining all 6DOF. Everything from small tight cockpits like Ant's Tiger Moth or Flying Iron's Spitfire, through to large flight decks like the PMDG DC-6 - one Tobii set-up serves them all. I've also found it better than TrackIR in Arma3 - (no other games explored yet). I wonder if it's because Tobii has infrared emitters much further apart than TrackIR, making it more accurate, or less twitchy, or something - I'm no expert. Also, the ability to get an instant 90-degree increase in the Tobii viewing angle, by adding in a snap view via the POV hat switch, is extremely useful. Far less strain on neck and extraocular muscles. TrackIR is still sitting atop my monitor, but comparing the two directly - for setting up, utility and much greater convenience, Tobii is superior IMO. With the ratio-adjustable combination of eye and head movement, I've found it much more natural, too. Surely not everybody was kung fu fighting. https://rationalwiki.org

You can get it to kick in if you really need to. But to do so you need to also fire up the trackIR mouse emulation app "TIRMouse.exe" from the trackIR folder, and I am pretty sure that means you are using a default profile which is not really suited to flightsims (one of the reason new users struggle is the default profile, downloading the "Seth" profile for flightsims makes a massive difference) .
January 27, 20233 yr Well I'm a TrackIR user since my P3D days and decided to give the Tobii Eye Tracker a try. I wanted to see what it was about and also not have to deal with a hat or headset sensor as I own both. It was easy to setup and after a few suggested settings for both head and eye sensitivity I did two full flights in the PMDG 737and I'm very please with the results. Movement was smooth and everything worked great. I ran it on my 42in OLED TV which I use as my monitor and my eyes were moving smoothly from edge to edge, verified by ghost. I like the Tobii and plan on keeping it in my collection. Er? I'm not using Track IR at all. I'm using Open Track with my own tailored profile. My point was just that you can launch open track after the sim with no problems, which apparently track ir has. Then search windows for "mouse emulation" and start it. Reselect whatever config you use in the TrackIR software because it may have changed it to a default one. Carry on flying. My Track IR almost never crashes but it did a while ago and someone told me about this. I have had it crash once more since and this trick saved my flight. Actually, it didn't crash it was caused by me if I'm honest. I restarted it without needing to and consequently was faced with the same issue. 5800X3D - Strix X570-E - 32GB 3600Mhz DDR4 - AMD RX 9070 XT- Samsung 980 Pro x2
January 27, 20233 yr The other thing is do not use the default trackIR profile it is designed for FPS games. Go to the trackIR website and download the Seth flight profile. https://forums.naturalpoint.com/download/file.php?id=61&sid=80351f705255ecaacb9b4070334d698b
