RTX4090 Upgrade From 3090

Recommended Posts

I'm curious whether the frame-generation of the 4000 cards works on all programs, or just programs specifically designed to use it? For example, if I'm using YouTube TV to stream my TV programming, can I perhaps get 120 fps while watching the Super Bowl -- for a smoother visual experience?

It's gotta be enabled by the developer.

I have a kind of on topic question regarding the RTX 4090. I have one on order, and I just wanted to confirm that with the 4090, it is recommended to have HAGS turned ON. Can some current 4090 users confirm or deny this?

You actually need to have it on for frame generation to work.  In the case of the 4090 HAGS is what allows it to do it’s magic.

If your dev mode FPS graph reads «limited by main thread» in heavy scenarios like EGLL and you get 35FPS with a 3090, a 4090 will provide you exactly nothing. Unless of course you turn on frame generation on the 4090, then your FPS will double. Easy as that...

Thanks for mentioning something which I have been curious about for a while... I have considered an upgrade from 3090 to 4090 but question what this might achieve in terms of fps improvement given that with my current spec I get «limited by main thread» and this is on a high-end system purchased only 12 months ago (see system spec)

60 FPS at Heathrow compared to 30 is night and day.

is 850Watt PSU enough for a 4090 ?

Some vendors say yes some no.

I think it's marginal. I swapped mine out for a 1,000 watt. No problems.

Interesting...

I may have applied similar logic to arrive at the same conclusion as outlined by @AnkH but, of course, there may be other factors which neither of us has taken into consideration?

Would you be so kind as to elaborate in support of your disagreement please?

The 35 FPS provided by the 3090 will be 15-25% better using a 4090 WITHOUT using FG.

So roughly speaking, using FG you'd be looking at 80FPS. Without it you'd be looking at 40 ish FPS.

Sure, those kinds of improvements fall in line with what I expect from what research I have done

3090 selling for over 2 grand and hard to buy 4090 around the same price uses less power and blows the 3090 away,

The 4090Ti will hit the market later this year and will likely push the 4090 price down.

I’ve all ready explained for him above what was false. Sure he could have put it better but calling him a troll just antagonises the situation.
