I presume that if you boot MSFS and stay on the map page and don't FLY then there is no stutter shown on the Developers Mode FPS screen up in the right hand corner of MSFS?

Good point - if you spend a while planning routes or even browsing in the marketplace, does the problem occur?

I remember disconnecting this drive last spring when I went from the stand-alone version of MSFS to Steam

Wait a minute here - are you saying that you originally had the MS Store version of MSFS installed?

Do I see it correctly that your SSD drive "Steam and other" is basically empty? You could use it to make an additional install of Windows and MSFS for testing purposes... If you don't have a lot of software to install (like in your case with a flightsim only PC), it doesn't take that much time, and you can still revert to your existing installation. Set the boot drive in your BIOS to the new disk, and run the install tool from a bootable USB drive, as you'd do after a full wipe.

The base installation of Windows itself shouldn't take more than 30-60 minutes, then you need to add the chipset drivers (either from Intel/AMD or your motherboard manufacturer), the GPU driver, possibly a sound driver (although the one Windows installs should be good enough).

Then you can try to run MSFS without a full re-install: Download and install the Steam client, enter your credentials, install MSFS (this only downloads the base install of 1-2 GB). When you launch MSFS, it'll ask you where you want to install the bulk of the files. Point it to the existing MSFS directory and you should be good to go without further downloads.

Overall this procedure shouldn't take longer than 2-3 hours, and it would help a lot for solving your issues.

I mean, this isn't your work PC with lots of different software installed and document files spread out over many folders on various drives... so it's relatively easy to do a new install.

Hi Republic, here's what I just did then I have to do other real-world things.

I went to Steam and found what's shown on these screenshots.

I then moved the games for the MSFS (F) drive but it wouldn't allow me to move probably the most important files.

The Infocom games are some of my all-time favorites despite me not having even played them yet and I bought them a couple of years ago.

Anyway, here's the screen shots taken in consecutive order.  Now, I wonder how I can move that last set of files or will I have to completely uninstall MSFS and Steam?

I would advise to uninstall those old favorite games if you don't use them.
Then choose an SSD where you want to have your games, and then another separate SSD for MSFS only.
Uninstalling all of MSFS first of course. Including all game files.
And then reinstalling MSFS on a clean, separate drive for all the files it needs.

Leaving some files over here and over there could be an issue, suddenly Steam or MSFS wants to read an obscure file somewhere that is on a slow disk /SSD that has to be "woken up" every time.

I’m sorry Pete, I don’t understand this.  You’re stating if I roll back Windows I can tell it to not update? To basically keep it in a perpetual state?

Hi Fielder, yes sir, you’re correct.  The way I test is this, I use the default 152 and taxi around KATL, live weather off and approximately 2:00 PM in the afternoon.  All II do is taxi around the entire airport, finger poised on the stopwatch on my iPhone.  It usually starts anywhere between 2 to 8 minutes after pressing the yellow start flight button and it’s always in even second increment.  Eg; 2:00, 4:00, 8:00 minutes with no seconds.  And then it’s precisely at 60 seconds thereafter on the lap mode.  So what I do is while the stopwatch is running is I keep an eye on the plane and when it hits 60 seconds, there it is, a pause.  Say there’s a truck driving around, even if I’m not moving, the truck will pause at 60 seconds.

Edit:

I forgot to mention, in the FPS counter it’ll go from green 30 to red teens for that split second.  It’s so fast yet detectable.

I don’t go to the marketplace but it will pause while planning routes, yes.

Yes.  The reason I installed Steam was on the advice of a “friend” here because I had the Windows permissions nonsense that made it very frustrating because I could put anything IN the Community folder but not take anything OUT of it.  Man that was annoying.

Hi Pete, thanks again.  But if I do that would I have the community folder permissions problem again?  I tried to reinstall it to a different location but still had that issue.

And you’re right.  I think I have steam and MSFS files across several drives.  C drive, F, and I think K.  I’m not at the PC right now but I could give paths later.

Again, sarcasm, it’s almost like an obsession with some people.

What does it matter if there’s a thousand pages?  Why does this bother you?

I would honestly like to know why certain people are obsessed with pages here.

I feel sorry for people who behave like this.

Thank you WIm.  I appreciate it.  After all I did one would think it would be simple but despite the dozens of wonderful troubleshooting ideas people here have provided I’ve come up empty handed.

Logic tells me it can’t be MSFS because I presume millions of people do not have this issue.  On MSFS’s forum I read that only a small minority, a handful of people had this issue.

Thanks Republic.  This is very logical.  It’s on my list of things to do which I constantly reorder and complete specific tasks in order of simplicity.  Much appreciated sir.
