For those that were interested I finally figured it out.  Using ProcMon I was able to catch the SteamWebHelper.exe running exactly at the same time as the pauses.  Unfortunately there's no way to disable it.

Very happy to hear that! Finally.

I thought you ruled out Steam earlier in this thread?

Well, anyway, I'm glad you found the cause.  I told you ProcMon was the tool to use!  It may be daunting at first but most of its features you do not need to know about, to solve many issues like this.

Hi Mace, thanks.  Yes sir, ProcMon is the tool to use.  Once I learned enough to not be dangerous with it I liked a couple of features.  1 is you can right click to exclude processes and 2 you can highlight the suspected item.  And sure enough, inline with the pauses and at one minute increments I found the offending file.

Do I see it correctly that your SSD drive "Steam and other" is basically empty?

I think that is where things got tripped up.  This is an external USB drive... and my guess is that both the original problem with the Steam Overlay, and now the Steam Web Helper is that Steam wanted to access this external drive every 60 secs..

Lets see how things work with MSFS on an internal SSD, and Steam out of the picture.. 😉

Final results.  Perfect.

I'd like to thank everyone here at AVSIM that helped me troubleshoot this problem.  I could have done what I did today in the beginning but myself and several others wanted to see what was actually causing it.

I now have the store version installed and all my add-ons as well and everything is running nicely.  Not one stutter.  I spent a lot of time testing tonight and I can finally say it's fixed.

I would like to thank one person in particular, @Bert Pieke.  Bert encouraged me to continue and was very helpful with the install today.  Thanks Bert!

Jack, glad you have a solution. I took your postings to heart and particularly interested in the SteamWebHelper. I tried modifying the shortcut and it seemed to work. What also  worked was and this I demonstrated by monitoring Task Manager. If you start Steam normally, SteamWebHelper loads and is active in TM. If you go into Steam and select "offline mode", SteamWebHelper does NOT stop. It still runs BUT, if you close Steam app, then restart and confirm to start in OFFLINE mode, then SteamWebHelper will NOT start and isn't present in TM. Seems after selecting Offline mode in Steam, one has to exit and  confirm upon restart that OFFLINE is what is needed.

Anyway, glad you got it sorted. Just a tidbit in case someone else has a similar issue. Happy flying.. Terry

glad you got it sorted, Jack

it is still a mystery why many of us are constantly running Steam MSFS without any clockwork at 60sec pause that you encountered…

Thanks PM!  Much appreciated and hopefully later today I’ll continue my coastal flight.  Yeah, no more Steam for me, that was a mistake.
