Steam on an external USB drive..? 😉

I think its a question of how Windows handles external drives.  I try to keep my sim builds lean and mean.

Any intensive data accessing game on a usb connected drive is daft. USB is slooooow. I wouldn't run any game on one and not expect to have some performance issues, regardless of Steam.

Notice, with even how long this thread is, that nobody ever dreamed he was running the sim on usb drive...and he never mentioned it, as if it were a normal thing to do.

Actually, it would appear that parts of the Steam program were on the USB drive, not "the sim".

It is not clear that the speed of the connection was the issue, but possibly Windows having to wake up the connection every minute.. so go easy here.. 😉

Hi Jack

Glad you got your 60 second pause fixed 🙂

When you decided to go with the Store version, I guess you would have to re-install MSFS ?

Did your community folder work with the new install, or did you have to reinstall aircraft, scenery, etc etc

Reason I am asking is because I too have the 60 second pause same as you 😒

If you  going  down  that road  than  start  from  scratch  again, uninstall everything,  this  way you will start  from a clean  state   again

What also  worked was and this I demonstrated by monitoring Task Manager. If you start Steam normally, SteamWebHelper loads and is active in TM. If you go into Steam and select "offline mode", SteamWebHelper does NOT stop. It still runs BUT, if you close Steam app, then restart and confirm to start in OFFLINE mode, then SteamWebHelper will NOT start and isn't present in TM. Seems after selecting Offline mode in Steam, one has to exit and  confirm upon restart that OFFLINE is what is needed.

Hi Terry

See my post below. Maybe problem solved.

Sorry Terry, the problem seems to have rectified itself.

A computer reboot and a 2 hour flight, and no 60 second pauses (touch wood).

More testing tomorrow.

Glad you seem to have it solved. Yesterday I had a flight setup for a five hour flight and all went well. I did have a crash though during long approach, but it wasn't the program.. It was the aircraft. Seems I had entered an accelerated stall during a turn..🥴. Program, thankfully worked fine for over five hours. Hope your sim is stable now..
