What do you use for flight control settings

Featured Replies

Not sure my topic title explains what I am wondering. I am wondering how many people use different types of flight control definitions, meaning: do you configure everything within MSFS, do you use SpadNext, do you use Axis & Ohs, or something else. I have the simulator since it came out but have not spent very much time with it. Now that I am fully retired, I am starting to want to get it properly configured.

I am not a pilot and I know very little about flying at all. So, at least for now, I am not trying to configure commercial airliners or anything like that.

I have Honeycomb devices (Alpha / Beta) and some rudder pedals.

I would love it if people would describe what methods they use to configure their controllers and if folks want to point me to good instructional articles/videos, that would be great.

Thanks all ...........

Well, this is a rabbit hole, but yes to the above.

For the most part, I try and keep important stuff configured within MS first. I have decades in Information Systems and I don't fully trust SimConnect to, well, stay connected.

I have a Thrustmaster TCA Airbus (that's being warrantied, but that's another matter). Everything off that controller is either MSFS config, or the FlyByWire A320 FlyPad config, which is the same thing.

For the B737s, I was using Spad, but around the time I started having problems with the TCA I took it out of the equation. It turned out to be a hardware issue.

I also use Axis and Ohs for my StreamDeck. There are a ton of profiles on flightsim.to, and I have the XL stream deck. I use this for a combination of gauges,  and clicking buttons there aren't keyboard commands for. I haven't yet, but I could use the StreamDeck to daisy-chain some commands together that are key binds.

I use mostly now Axis & Ohs, since I can bind very easy the controls to every different aircraft seperately.

I have quite some hardware connected and just have to setup it once for PMDG or Fenix.

When I switch planes, it switches the different controller setup really easy!

Is there a profile exchange for this like there is Spad?

Within MSFS only. All works exactly as I want it to.

Axis and Ohs for all the different axes. MSFS Flight Control for the other buttons and switches.

I don't know SPAD but with Axis and Ohs you can apply or merge config to different aircraft. (Like PMDG 737-700 to 737-900 if you want)

Except for the bits and pieces in the Axis and Ohs forum, nothing that I know of. Good idea though as the devs change variables when they update and it's a pita to redo the bindings to find what works.

Ok.

Spad has a thing where I can browse in-app for other configs some people have for my controllers.

I use AAO, because most more high-fidelity 3rd party aircraft use custom autopilot systems and therefore don't interact with the MSFS default commands very well (or at all). That's why I need AAO to configure the common AP buttons.

For transparency: I'm a community mentor at the BATC discord. However, I do not get paid for it in any way.

I also have HC ALPHA / BRAVO and have been an IT guy and flightsimmer for many years.

I use a combination of FSUIPC7, MSFS and SPAD.neXt. My Logitech rudders I do totally in MSFS for all airplanes. For the ALPHA / Bravo I try to use SPAD mostly since many airplanes require LVARs or other special mappings to assign to the HC controls especially the BRAVO AP panel. SPAD is great, but requires a lot of learning initially. Fortunately there are great vids and many online profiles and snippets that help a lot. The other big reason to use SPAD instead of MSFS is automatic profile detection and switching for the airplane selected. I hate trying to remember to switch MSFS profile manually and fire up and nothing works.  I love FSUIPC and have used for years but no I mostly just use it for a few ALPHA buttons for unique online flying stuff.

I'm late to MSFS and I'm using an X52 Pro flightstick, having assigned a bunch of controls to the various buttons and sensitivity settings to axes.  I assigned these directly through the MSFS Controls menus.  I have a single profile for this so far.

However previously in P3D I had used the X52's own software to program in a more extensive range of functions, as well as using FSUIPC, and may well do the same for MSFS in due course.  I also had a range of profiles for use within P3D, as well as for other games that used the flightstick (e.g. DCS, X).

Hi,

IMHO, for a casual simmer like me with my devices (Thrustmaster Throttle/VKB Joy and MFG Rudder) there is no need for additional software like AaO / SPAD eg. Standard MSFS offers all assigments I need.

I use only 2 profiles - one for heli and one for wing ac. and it is easy to switch between, even if you have started the sim with the wrong profile. The profiles cover the main inputs for camera/control surfaces/engines/trimm/flaps/gear and AP on/off. The rest is done with my mouse .....

Best regards

I only use MSFS which has two drawbacks

- it doesn’t automatically change the whole controller profile set when you select an aircraft and you have to manually change the profile of each controller. If I am not mistaken no utility addon helps either.

- it doesn’t tell you which variable is linked to a cockpit button or switch by actuating them . The three utilities do the job but the need is rare.

So I do not see the need of an addon like FSUIPC, Spad or Aao . Keep it lean tells me my  protracted experience as a simmer.

Early on, I made sensitivity profiles for each aircraft but I wonder now whether its the way to go. And no dead zones as all my controllers use the Hall effect sensors.

I configure everything from within MFS Control Setting, but honestly I would really like ASOBO to go the X-Plane way and associate controller settings automatically with aircraft in the hangar according to a joystick setup menu...

It's a bit of a PiTA to always have to manually select the correct configuration when I change aircraft 😕
