Best ATC background chatter prog ?

Featured Replies

I'm thinking about getting one of those ATC chatter programs that you often hear on Youtube sim videos, so I thought I'd ask here first.  FS-ATC-Chatter seems to be a good one - does anyone have any experience with it ? Or is there something better?

Thanks for any info.

  • For those using FS ATC chatter don't forget to check every once in awhile for updates. I just downloaded updates for the US and Canada, over 4,000 new chatter files. They sound great!!!

  • Never thought I would buy a ATC chatter app. But fs-atc-chatter is very immersive  and plays well with Pilot2Atc. If you press the 🎤 hotkey the chatter is muted. If you release it, chatter goes on.

I bought FS ATC chatter maybe a year ago, but I only used it for a few weeks. It's definitely not bad, I might use it again, but I can't notice a huge difference to Live ATC, where you can also at least find some services for different regions of the Earth.

Hi @Paul K

I remember trying that and after one flight I was convinced it was worth the affordable price. Never fly without it since.

Should maybe mention that I am a casual simmer and don’t need the chatter to be 100% accurate and matched to countries, cities etc...

In my opinion, LiveATC.net is better.

Look where the original poster is from.

Unless he does all his flying in the U.S. LiveATC is more or less usesless because of imposed EU regulations on the open availability of ATC frequencies.

Ah, well then that explains why I had so much trouble flying in Finland...I had to use Oslo (ENGM) chatter.   Disregard my suggestion.

Can someone share links, please which ATC chatter do you mean? Found these while the first seems not be for MSFS

@Paul K

Just checked, the demo is still available https://www.stickandrudderstudios.com/fs-atc-chatter-sample-collection-and-demo/

Spend a bit of time trying it out so you understand the limitations as well.

The clips are sampled from LiveATC.net from around the world and matched against regions and controller types. They have been trimmed of any very specific geographical references so they can work for more than one location within a region. For some that might also be a drawback. I personally don’t mind a Dutch accent controller chatting in the background when I fly in Denmark or UK.

Let us know where you land 😉

Yeah, I was also thinking, Ireland is not UK, Switzerland and Hungary aren't Germany etc. But the regional lingo can stil be found in LiveATC. i.e. Japan is in there for east Asia. In this respect I think ATC chatter isn't that much better than LiveATC, but it might be a bit, plus the convenience of switching zones in ATC Chatter. I remember the price seemed very decent for Chatter, so either way LiveATC or Chatter or alternating between the two is pretty good.

They are constantly updated too, which is great.

Thanks for all the responses, folks. Help and advice is always appreciated.

@SuperKaro2014 thanks for that demo link, I shall give it a try. I don't stick to any one particular area in MSFS, so the more global it is, the better - though not vital.

FS-ATC-Chatter is what I use and really like it. It strips out location specific details so it works at any airport. From their website...

1. Clips are broken down into separate files each of which represents a single exchange between a pilot and an ATC facility such as Clearance, Ground, Tower, Departure, Center, Approach, and for VFR CTAF.

2. The separate files for each exchange allows Pilot2ATC or the stand alone player to insert pauses between playback allowing for you to interact naturally with ATC.

3. The clips are categorized by world region so you can install a collection of clips for the area of the world you are flying in. Version 1.2.0 has the following file counts by region:
- United States: 7,702
- Europe: 8,077
- Canada: 5,235
- South America: 539
- Asia: 4,768
- Africa: 562
- Oceania: 3,031

4. Clips are edited to remove any glaring location specific information. As an example the exchange “United 6626, Boston Tower, Line up and Wait” will have been edited to say “United 6626, Tower, Line up and Wait. References to specific SIDS, STARS, Ramps, Taxiways, Runways, and way-points are not changed.

5. Clips are organized by controller so when you are tuned to a specific controller type on your radio you will hear clips associated with that controller.

6. Each clip has its audio volume adjusted so that all clips have roughly the same volume level.

No, FSHud is a specific ATC program that replaces the default ATC. ATC chatter is simply a program that replays actual sound files and gives a background of ATC radio chatter. It is not an ATC program but just something that adds some background atmosphere while flying. I have to add, it does a pretty good job, but as some have suggested, similar atmosphere can be created with LiveATC (with limitations.)
