What can I upgrade to get better performance

Featured Replies

I am using an i9 10850k with RTX 3090 and 32GB@4000Mhz. Would it make sense to upgrade the CPU to get better performance? I use 2k Monitor, would it make sense to change to 4K to increase performance?

That would worsen performance, not improve it. You don’t say what simulator you’re using but the easiest way is to move setting sliders to the left.

Provide more info if you want some help. Or turn down your settings.

What are the settings to put down without losing much quality?

I don't have MSFS so I'll leave it to others to assist. I'll also move your post to the MSFS section. Your hardware is good. No point upgrading that.

Any CPU upgrade will improve performance, but I don't know that it'd improve it enough for you to be worth the expense.

- Are you running MSFS off of an SSD or an old physical HDD?  If it's an HDD, you'll see a good uptick in performance by getting an SSD, and prices on those are pretty great right now.

- What graphics settings have you chosen?

- What background programs are running? Some people end up with 30+ applications running, eating up system resources. Shut down junk like "system optimizers" (actually, you should probably just uninstall them, most of them don't do anything but sap performance), and even things like Steam (unless your MSFS is from Steam, of course), Skype, Discord, etc.

- There's a Windows bug that causes the Desktop Window Manager to go crazy and start using 90+% of your GPU. This will bring your sim to its knees no matter what hardware you're running. A reboot solves it temporarily.

- Check your internet connection. MSFS streams a lot of data while you're flying, and slow internet speeds will result in laggy sim performance.

Using a SSD. Usally I am running, vpilot, navigraph charts, firefox, volanta, Pegasus (virtual airline acars), I think that's all. I have 80-100 Mbit/s, that shoud be enough, right?

My Graphic settings (even though I use limited 30 fps, which is not setup on the images).

That terrain level of detail number seems high. Could you try something like the "HIGH END" setting just to check whether it's something about your settings. Also, you can try the nVidia GeForce Experience RENDER SCALING/SHARPENING settings in order to render at a lower resolution but then sharpen the resulting image. I do that at 4K and it works well.

Another thing to try is the DLSS anti-aliasing. Using that in conjunction with the render scaling/sharpening process really worked well for me (specs in signature). Still, if you have custom airports, lots of AI traffic, etc., things are going to slow down.

Using DLSS with 1440p/2k might not help much since he probably is limited by CPU in most situations. The one setting that will most likely give more fps is Terrain Level Of Detail. 325 is really high, 200 or maybe 240 should suffice. But if the frames are limited to 30 I can't see how that would help.

4080 with frame generation, you should win about 120% frames per second.

I agree - probably double his fps

That explains a lot about what’s happening here.  I can see the process going beserk after a while but no idea why until now. Thanks for posting.

I’m getting a 4080 today & looking fwd to ‘frame generation’.

@737_800 turn down TLOD & traffic, reduce others from ‘ultra’.

Don't be fooled here or elsewhere by the exclusive focus on FPS as a measure of "performance" as it's only one consideration--one WILL have stuttering if not set up correctly, despite having higher frame rates.  Your GPU is OVERKILL for your display and moreover, your CPU/RAM/GPU/VRAM is amply sufficient to produce exquisitely smooth animation when set up correctly for the other parameters to be considered in performance.

As a starter:

  • Make sure your CPU is overclocked safely to the extent it can be--this sim is CPU limited bigtime and that is free performance to exploit
  • Set Terrain LOD at 100 for starters as a baseline.  This setting is by far the hardest on MSFS' "main thread".  Object LOD can stay maxed at 200 w/ littlel hit on the main thread.  All other settings:  Ultra w/ your current hardware.  If you look out the window of your fav aircraft, experiement w/ T-LOD 100 and 200:  the difference visually is not hugely significant in fact may well notice zero difference in visuals until you really scrutinize for it.
  • Read and see if you can apply these concepts:

https://www.avsim.com/forums/topic/628655-ultimate-smoothness-at-modest-frame-rates/?do=findComment&comment=4899096

One caveat:  there are factors outside of your hardware and how it's configured that can impact MSFS adversely so be aware this can come into play (server issues, bandwidth thru your ISP).
