Thanks mate.  Yeah, it's probably not for me.  I like that buying outside of the marketplace let's me select what drive and folder.  Then I point add-on linker to it.  Thanks though bud.

I somehow moved mine to D:\Games\Microsoft\fs2020\localcache\packages\Official\OneStore    -  but it was ages ago and I cannot recall where I found the details of how to do it.

I won’t use the marketplace unless it’s the only way.  I’m not a fan of the sim market app. So I’d say orbx.

I would say SimMarket was the ideal site for flightsim purchases in the past. Now, for different reasons, maybe the high cost of transactions for the developers, they're facing a lot more competition.

I don't like the Marketplace buying experience. But I use it for choice whenever possible. Because it makes MS wealthier.

There's a limit to how many people will ultimately buy the MSFS sim. But addons sales can go on forever. When Microsoft's income stream from MSFS wanes  enough, then their servers and their scenery will be turned off.

But then we will have FS2030 and everything starts again.

I'm bumping an old thread instead of starting a new one..

I read on the Simmarket webpage that their installer delivers automatic installs, which I took to mean similar to what we have with Orbx or Inibuilds installers. Looking at the simmarket app (version 3.4) I'm not seeing any options to automatically download any of the products I've purchased.

Does anybody know if this feature works? Or if perhaps its limited to only certain products? I like the idea of automatic updates which we get with Orbx and Inibuilds but seems to be missing from the Simmarket app...

Hi all-

I've been looking at these four sources for some purchases I'm considering.
Is there a preference/advantage to one or the other?

Being new to MSFS I have only one right now, the Carenado PC12, that I was flying regularly in P3D. Looks and flys great except for the dark cockpit which still seems dark after I turn all the lights on including the dome light. Might be an adjustment somewhere in the sim I'm not familiar with.

Anyway, I'm leaning towards purchasing from the developer if nothing else from a support aspect.

Let me know what the pifalls and upside are. I'm interested in your experiences.

Mark

I would say the marketplace.  Updates are easy to keep up with and process.

That is a strange concept.  You don't want the folks that brought you the flight sim you enjoy to make money.

Don't know what you mean by "automatic" downloads, but the rightmost icon up on the top of the screen (next to your ID) shows you available updates, which you can click on to have downloaded/installed as per the original method used.

Ryzen 9 7900X, Corsair H150 AIO cooler, 64 Gb DDR5, Asus X670E Hero m/b, 3090ti, 13Tb NVMe, 8Tb SSD, 16Tb HD, 55" Philips 4k HDR monitor, EVGA 1600w ps, all in Corsair 7000D airflow case. Sims in use - 2020, 2024, XP-12 and -11, FSX/SE, P3Dv4.5 and v5.4. DCS and AFS2 installed but rarely used

What I mean by automatic downloads is what Orbx and iniBuilds do. I.e., I click "INSTALL" on a title in one of those Apps and its downloaded and extracted (installed) into a folder on my PC. In the case of Orbx you can set it to be a folder of your choosing or the community folder.

In the case of Simmarket, it appears that they haven't implemented such a feature and you have to manually download the product (usually in a ZIP for or an installer), the run the installer itself.

The disadvantage with Simmarket as I see it is that there isn't a "one click" option for updates. I.e. in ORBX I click on the "UPDATES" button and it automatically downloads and instals the latest verison of a product. With Simmarket, as you say I've got to review what updates exist and then manually download, extract and install them.

Its just a more dated application. Would be nice if they updated it a little.

For Simmarket, I think it depends on the product.  I have some things that auto install, but others still just give you a .zip file you have to install yourself.

I agree, the marketplace sucks big time for me. And they won't give you a receipt telling you what you purchased always cryptic email that I still haven't figured out. I stick with Orbx, contrail, or Sim market. I can always go back and trace my purchases and redownload if needed. With the marketplace I still haven't figured out how to get a refund or track what I purchased from it. Also, If you're an MSFS Addons linker user. Contrail and Orbx. will allow you to install and update directly into wherever folder you use for external storage outside of the community folder.

My post said that I want to maximize the money that Microsoft makes and therefore I use the marketplace whenever possible. If and when their income stream wanes enough, then Microsoft will close the cloud to flight simulator. And therefore, the richer they get, the happier I am.

I see that now.  Your comment, "I don't like the Marketplace buying experience" threw me off.

I'm happy so many are supporting the marketplace.  In concept I would love to do it.  But...

Just the other day I got a reminder why I don't purchase from marketplace.  This was in the compatibility notes for simfx.

So, a 3rd party developer makes an addon plane and sells it on it's homepage: Users can edit the files. They also sell the same plane in the marketplace: users cannot edit the files.

So how is the designer protected by that not being possible from marketplace purchases but it is still easy from off site purchases of the same plane? Encoding the files in the marketplace provides not one bit more security from the possibility of theft.
