What do you think is the future of MSFS and AI?

Recommended Posts

AI traffic as it sits in MSFS is low effort and even outdated for a release 2020.

The AI traffic implementation doesn't match with the effort and innovation of the terrain/aerodynamics tech in MSFS.

I want an AI ATC traffic program that simulates every different aspect of VFR / IFR communication. I want to be able to call up a FSS, an FBO, the company on the phone or get responses via ACARS, or to talk to other aircraft. "72H, where are you in the pattern, again?"

I also want AI to hasten the pace of development. Asobo has been working on their new ground friction model with 3d tire models (instead of points) for years now. I don't know the first thing about development, but I've been told AI can do a lot of the boring work and leave the finder details to humans. I'd love if that were true and AI can be used here.

Take-offs are optional, landings are mandatory.
The only time you have too much fuel is when you're on fire.
To make a small fortune in aviation you must start with a large fortune.

There's nothing less important than the runway behind you and the altitude above you.
It's better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air, than in the air wishing you were on the ground.

I would like to see Asobo use AI to monitor all real world  controlled airports, the metar weather and the traffic patterns of real aircraft (from the source they use to inject 'real traffic' into the sim) and start to build up some 'smart' rules for each controlled airport as to which runway is used based on weather conditions, and for airports such as EGLL, learn when they switch landing/takeoff runways at certain hours .

Using those learnt rules (which can be enhanced and added to as more observations are made without requiring new sim updates) , have MSFS sim query  the back-end servers to know which direction the in-sim ATC and AI should be directing traffic and which duty runways should be used.

...."start like a horse to stop like a donkey" ... in my personal opinion this has been the latest development of msfs 2020 ... of course it is the best simulator ever, and hundred of features in it ... but from last year until now the improvements are poor or nothing (just patches) , we are just feed with world updates which are decreasing in content and quality also ...... so many features are just stopped (from directx 12 to AI traffic ....) .... so I hope they return to be a horse again ... anyway .. they are a great team, and today's hardware is opening to them a wide world of possibilities ...

Cheers !

The mainstream media hysteria about AI has reached ridiculous proportions, except that some are rightfully concerned about its impact on collection of mass privacy DATA and the displacement of jobs that require bespoke handling of such data. At the moment the much hyped ChatGTP cannot even compose a convincing simple melody with even simpler harmony, so how it is going to design a convincing Ai aircraft movement algorithm for flight sims like MSFS is a very long way off. Maybe the construction of scripts for better ATC is more promising but the most important thing here is decent voices that are believable.

Ai aircraft movements cannot be programmed by artificial intelligence. You need skilled programmers in co-operation with professional flight personnel with a deep understanding of ground and air movements, altitude restrictions and air spaces. As Asobo seems largely to be more interested in expansion of scenery and global landscapes, it doesn't look like it is that interested in knuckling down to create aircraft Ai movements beyond the very simplified methodology currently used. ATC requires at the very least a SUITE of believable voices capable of talking in a believable manner and with a "knowledge" of precise ATC procedures. At the moment ATC in MSFS is way short of that designed for FSX more than a decade ago.

It makes a lot of dumb errors, but it has its uses and it is still in the somewhat early stages. It requires human assistance and intervention. In its current state, I don't see it doing that much with Flight Sims, but who knows in the next version or the one after that.

It's in the early stages, and I'm not going to pretend to know how far it's going to be or at what year that happens.

However, the eventual implications are far reaching and concerning. I've had a lot of disturbing arguments with ChatGPT.

Microsoft probably has a huge lead using AI for scenery & geography, compared to the other flight simulator competition, including even the combat flight simulators.  This is because of the Bing team at Microsoft. For the competition to match Microsoft, they probably have to approach a company like Google. And AI will probably play a bigger and bigger role in making the scenery better for stuff like flight simulators, and maybe even for video games that require modern real life geography and city scenery data.

Unless the other flight simulators can get scenery data from Google, I think MSFS will always have an inherent advantage when it comes to live streaming the scenery for the entire world.

As long as its not name Skynet or anything then we should be good.

I think that one day soon A.I. will be writing all the code for flight simulator and probably everything else.

AI seems like it could be used fairly soon to help in airport/scenery making and maybe in game ATC?

A dev I spoke to recently thought AI built airports weren’t that far away. I like the signature certain devs have with their airports and sceneries, although we might get more cool stuff quicker it seems a bit sad if it all becomes a bit generic.

As for other aspects of flight simulation...hmm...where would AI help.  Maybe with, well, AI aircraft.  They could more intelligently navigate, with holds and better go-arounds per the charts, etc. etc.  I think that's related to ATC in a way.

Anywhere there is massive data having to do w/ our hobby could jettison development.  For example, were there a massive data set of aerial satellite data, and there is, by exposing AI/machine learning to this massive data set AI would learn what vegetation looks like all over the planet potentially throughout the year and this could be translated into very real seasonal change.  Yes on ATC as well by exposing AI to massive actual ATC data looking at types of planes, routing relative to regional airports and all the rest.
