IMO: yes, totally. I had an RTX 3090 and got an RTX 4090 this year. It double the fps and more importantly frametime stability is a lot better.

I mean, flying over the ocean you will go from 150 fps to 300 fps, in this case it really doesn’t matter much. But in airports like KLAX + FSLTL I went from 30 fps to 80. It’s a big deal where matters the most.

I have made two upgrades that I think improved significantly the performance on demanding situations: 5950x > 7800x3D and RTX 3090 > RTX 4090. So if you can buy a 3d cache cpu + an RTX compatible with FG, you won’t regret.

Ive just dropped dollar on 7800x3d and 4090 - can’t wait for my rig to arrive I’m so excited!

I don't know what you've got now but this upgrade will probably do 4x as many fps with heavy addons

You should be!!  It'll be like Ryan said above.  I recently went from an 8700K +3080ti to a 7800X3D +4090 and it's pretty amazing even at the big hubs with AI.

I can't get enough flying in.

My last PC was bought in 2015.  i7 4790k, 16GB, 1070 (the 1070 was the only upgrade I made) so my new rig is quite the generational leap.  Got myself a shiny new 4k monitor as well.

the i7 build served me well but this time next week I'll be in Frame Generation heaven I hope!!

Without FG at say EGLL inibuilds, in the Fenix with AI traffic (moderate) or Vatsim, full ultra settings what FPS do you get?

Wow.  I just did a quick test of this.  inibuilds KJFK is *hard* on the system.  I don't have their EGLL but I do have their KJFK and I did set myself down in the PMDG 737 at one of the A gates with 4K Ultra and FSLTL set pretty high.   AND keep in mind I am not yet running EXPO or any PBO optimization.

So in that test without FG it was pulling 32 fps in the PMDG's VC looking straight ahead.  I run a 200 TLOD usually, but I may need to re-visit that setting, and a couple of other settings, for inibuilds KJFK at least.

This weekend I should have time to turn on EXPO and PBO and I'll re-test.

I've been flying around places like Panama City, Lima, Bogota, Colombia (SKBO) using aftermarket scenery and Orbx SA mesh, but still there is no true ultimate test like inibuilds KJFK or EGLL + AI.

Anyway, I'm glad you brought this up because I need to stop procrastinating and finish setting up this system.

The problem with frame generation is that it's not a very good application for a flight simulator, unless you fly in really light areas or your graphics card already widely overpowers your settings.

The more "natural" FPS you have, the better frame generation works. On the other  hand, the less you have, the worse it'll work.

If you have less than 60 FPS without frame generation, it's probably not worth it.  I have a 4080 and sure, when I fly over the ocean or the desert, it shoots up my FPS to over 200, but as soon as I approach a high-traffic airport, it completely tanks everything.

My personal conclusion is that it's not worth dealing with the idiosincrasies of DirectX12.

I haven't been able to get FG to work reliably, though--it'll run for 30-45 min and CTD just about every time.  Up to that point I get 80-90 fps to the monitor, which is really smooth, but that marginal improvement over the 45-50 fps I get using the 4090 and DX11 isn't worth the intense aggravation of never getting to the point of a landing.

Hmm, this is kinda worrying 45-50 fps with the latest kit is not significantly more than I can achieve with a 9900KF and a 3080ti and if FG has reliability issues maybe not the time for a very expensive upgrade.

45-50 fps with the settings cranked way up (LOD 200, TAA, TLOD 200) was not something I could pull off with my MSFS box before I swapped out the video card (I run MSFS on a secondary machine--an i9-10900K @ 5.1 GHz and 3090).  Trading the 3090 for the 4090 increased my frame rate in DX11 from ~30-35 fps to 45-50fps, same settings, same CPU etc.

In the last 24 hours or so I've been having a change of fortune with FG.  After some extensive remote monitoring with HWInfo, I increased my AVX offset (MSFS apparently runs a fairly heavy mix of AVX instructions that hits the main thread on the last core very hard) and capped frame rates in the driver to 80 fps to hold the power draw on the 4090 to around 400-410W (at 90 fps it was bumping up against the TDP limit of 450W).  I'm now seeing frame rates (as reported by the monitor) pinned at 80 with very occasional drops into the mid-high 70s.  So far it's stable and very smooth.  I've had 5 trouble-free flights at those settings in the PMDG 737 into complex add-on airports with a heavy mix of FSTraffic-injected AI and heavy weather.  It's still a little early to declare victory, but it is encouraging after nearly a week of beating my head against the wall with 100% of my attempts ending in a CTD.

My FG/DX12 has been extremely reliable (7800X3D + Gigabyte 4090), in fact -- small sample size -- but I haven't had any CTD's with it after 2 months of use.  I'm currently actively trying to break it though, with heavy performance/add-on testing, so we'll see.

My previous rig was 8700K + 3080ti and with that setup I did get the occasional CTD in DX12 mode.

Also, with AI turned up + iniBuilds JFK I'd get about 10 fps with the same settings on my old machine.

@Bob Scott Frame rate capping with the driver is one of the things I'm going to look into doing.  I'll see if it bumps up against the power draw limit, thanks for pointing that out.  It's not that I'm having CTD's, but if I can avoid the extra heat brought on by 90-100 fps I'll do it.  I don't think I'll notice 80 fps vs. 90 fps.

The only negative about DX12 that I'm currently seeing is the visual bug at some airports, where the sim drops the textures in patches, and the ground shows beneath while I'm on the ground.  I believe that's a longstanding DX12 bug though.  Hopefully it'll be fixed eventually ... hopefully at the latest by MSFS2024.

Has anybody figured out how to use V-SYNC with FG. I used to work prior to AAU1 but that seemed to break it. There's quite a number of threads over at the official forums about it. I get huge FPS and main thread hits when I enable either in game v-sync or NVCP V-SYNC (or for that matter FPS capping via NVCP).

I am also a super noob her and have been trying to follow this thread and others on how to improve my performance.

I have a GTX4070ti, Ryzen 7 7700X 8-Core Processor. As much as I try I cannot get more than 20ish FPS when utilizing my Sim in sceneries like inibuilds KJFK and utilizing PMDG/Fenix aircraft with AIG traffic usually set pretty high. If this is normal, then no issues, but based on this discussion I do not seem to get any significant increase in frames when going from TAA and DLSS. I've included a picture of my settings in case I am doing something wrong. I do have hardware-acceleration enabled in my windows settings.

Yep their stuff is nice but super rough on performance.

At 1440p with similar settings to your 4k test (including AI) I get about 20-25 fps.  I think I dipped into the teens for a moment with the Longitude enhanced version and heavy cloud cover and rain.

But thanks to FG I get around 40-50

The term DLSS unfortunately has numerous meanings these days. DLSS 1 refers to the upscaling of images from lower to higher resolution. In your settings, you selected DLSS as your mode of anti-aliasing. Quite apart from this, DLSS 3 refers to FG (or frame generation). You did indeed select frame generation several options beneath your selected mode of anti-aliasing. Please note that you do not have to use DLSS anti-aliasing (or upscaling) in order to use DLSS 3 frame generation. Try changing your anti-aliasing to TAA, but leaving your frame generation option like it is now. Your screen resolution is set to 3840 x 2160 (or 4K), so attempting to "upscaling" your already-vast 4K display may be the problem here. You have excellent hardware, so you shouldn't be suffering 20ish fps under any flight scenario.

alright, finally even I am about to learn something. always believed that my anti-aliasing set to DLSS is FG. So it is not? well, there is no other "frame generation several options beneath your selected mode of anti-aliasing". thought my 3060 can do that too?

EDIT no, my 3060 cannot do FG. So anti-aliasing with DLSS is all I get. Fine then...
