Hello,

I’m considering upgrading to a 4080 from my 3080. At the moment, I use TAA as I find the cockpit displays go a bit blurry with DLSS.

Am I correct in thinking FG is only available with DLSS mode and therefore cockpit displays will have a slight blur?

Finally, the CPU is a 12600K, so would a 4080 be a overkill if I just upgraded the CPU or does the benefit of FG bypass a lot of the bottlenecking issues?

Many thanks,

Mike

No. FG also works with TAA.

I think this is the best part of FG. Especially when you are heavily CPU limited at large airports with lots of traffic, FG doubles the framerate and everything looks smooth withouit stuttering.

Amazing. Thank you.

How can I turn on FG with TAA?  And will that cause the blurry displays like DLSS FG?

Frame generation works only with DX12. MSFS defaults to DX11. So make sure you've switched to DX12 and completely rebooted the sim thereafter for the change to take effect. People often confuse different options that are unfortunately linked together under the term DLSS. DLSS 3 refers to FG. You do not need to use the original DLSS 1 upscaling -- which can lead to small amounts of blurring -- in order to use DLSS 3 for frame generation. If you have good hardware, as you do, you can use TAA and DLSS 3 together and get the best of both worlds. The only problem with this method is the one I suffer -- namely, that my antiquated TV display can't keep up with the 100+ fps I get. I have to dial down the output to 60fps, but it is a perfectly stable and stutter-free 60fps at 4K. For more fps, you need a dedicated computer monitor or one of the newer GSync or compatible TVs.

Another FG noob here. Right now I have a 3060Ti, which does the job (although locked at 31 FPS via RTSS, and a bit underclocked via MSI Afterburner) and a 1080p FreeSync monitor. I'm always limited by main thread (as expected).

I guess you all run MSFS with no frame lock. Will it make sense to upgrade from the 3060Ti to a 4060Ti (when it becomes available), just because of FG?

If you have a stable 31 FPS, I see little reason to spend money on a GPU upgrade if you are limited by the CPU..

What do you stand to gain?

Bert

I use FG with TAA without issues.

The only time I see some FG related blurriness is if I pan really quickly I might get a few visual artifacts as the FG catches up to the rapidly changing image.  It’s really not that noticeable and compared to the benefits of FG nothing to worry about.

It'll effectively double the frame rate by extrapolating motion trends in successive frames to create an interleaved GPU-generated frame in between each of the frames output by the program (CPU).  That extrapolation is all done outside MSFS in the GPU, so it actually makes sense--if you can get it to work.

I haven't been able to get FG to work reliably, though--it'll run for 30-45 min and CTD just about every time.  Up to that point I get 80-90 fps to the monitor, which is really smooth, but that marginal improvement over the 45-50 fps I get using the 4090 and DX11 isn't worth the intense aggravation of never getting to the point of a landing.

IMO: yes, totally. I had an RTX 3090 and got an RTX 4090 this year. It double the fps and more importantly frametime stability is a lot better.

I mean, flying over the ocean you will go from 150 fps to 300 fps, in this case it really doesn’t matter much. But in airports like KLAX + FSLTL I went from 30 fps to 80. It’s a big deal where matters the most.

I have made two upgrades that I think improved significantly the performance on demanding situations: 5950x > 7800x3D and RTX 3090 > RTX 4090. So if you can buy a 3d cache cpu + an RTX compatible with FG, you won’t regret.

Can you post a CapFrameX capture in a complex demanding scenario?  I'd love to see it, the FTV piece.

Thanks

Sure, but I will need to take a look on CapFrameX first, I never used it.

It's a fabulous freeware app that generates this kind of capture for FTV and Stuttering.  When you have started it simply hit F11 key to stop and start capture.  I will typically start after pushback and GSX has ended, then stop when I reach cruise altitude.

Do you have advice on how to set up this way?  TAA and DLSS3 seem to be mutually exclusive in my MSFS settings. I've turned on DX12 and restarted.

**EDIT**  I needed to turn on Hardware-Accelerated Graphics in the windows settings (exactly like it says in MSFS haha)

Smoothness, the sense of speed, the latter you 100% do not get at 30FPS. It's choppy, especially when using trackIR. 60 FPS should be what you aim for as minimum using trackIR. down to 40 works, but 60 or above is IDEAL.
