Im a flight simmer who hasnt been posting or hell made a account and today I wanted to ask the question

 

is mantaining XP as a sim (buying addons etc) worth it?

Absolutely. It's still in active development, a major new version was just released, and there are many things it does better than other sims.

[I'm assuming that this isn't a joke and that you haven't been following the industry for a while, which is understandable]

I havent been in the XP world in bout 6-12 months when I went fully into MSFS, Thats why i asked lmao..been following the industry since 2019

And what are you searching for exactly in a sim? It looks like MSFS doesn’t satisfy you if you are searching for an alternative. For me personnally it’s the best flight simulator around, although not perfect but the developpement is going on quite intensively.

Making a assumption? MSFS does sastify me, I own over 300 dollars of addons for FS2020 alone, Last time I heavily used XP12/11 was from late april to late may, I was just asking a question..smh yall get so pressed

There are quite a few airplanes in XP11/12 that haven't been done (or done well) in any other relatively current sim, to wit: B727, B737-200, B747-200, B767, A300, A340, A350, MD-11, Challenger 650, etc

My interest in those planes is what makes me conclude it's still worth keeping XP flying.

 

Well not interested in comparisons but is XP worth maintaining. Hell yes! Maintenance is non existent program wise. Runs without issues of any sort for me. Seriously impressed by its rendition of the world, use of scale and dynamic autogen. Not perfect but not a single place visited on the globe has been a disappointment. 

The immersive experience and spot on flight behaviour makes it worth maintaining - this is a serious sim. Models yes lots depends on what floats your boat I guess. Not all and sundry is catered for well and is excellent - simple. Want real taildragger flight - you get it, heavy metal yes behaves and feels like heavy metal. Cloud, sky and weather rendition real time is very good and slated for further improvement shortly. You wont find a better Piper Cub or Cessna 172 in any sim - bonus for me is a beautiful 707, MD80, Dash 8, Boeing 737 and MD11 for complexity and depth. Not sure what I could add except some old big pistons but they will come, Scenery and the Gateway process results in regularly updated and beautfully rendered simulation scenery and activities (lots of colour and action)

I do online and multiplayer stuff and it has been faultless with SWIFT and Teamspeak, 

Does me and a lot of other folk!

I own both sims and though I try to enjoy MSFS (and have bought tons of add ons for it), I find that XP12 is my go-to sim.

The color and lighting and clouds and trees are great, I like the clarity of the ground textures at altitude where you can look down from 2000 feet and read runway numbers, and I like the simplicity of the stock XP12 autogen plus airports creating a plausible version of the world to fly in without spending any money on add ons ((but of course you can install freeware or payware scenery or create orthos. 

Sure, photogrammetry and orthos are OK....IF they’re not a putrid green etc.

It’s hard for me to put it in words, but landing at a busy airport at dusk in XP12 just “feels” and looks better to me...like if flight sim was a play and the default scenery the set I find the XP12 stage more convincing and enjoyable...not perfect...but very plausible and enjoyable.

 

  

 

 

 

I bought mfs from minute 1 with many paid addons and I have enjoyed it a lot especially the last year but a couple of months ago I have reinstalled xp12 and this has become my main simulator again, especially because I have long since passed the effect of "seeing my house through the window" and I have begun to appreciate again what really matters to me the aircraft simulation with good detail and great sensations.

Apart from the sensations, the lighting and all the things mentioned above we have, Hot Star, Zibo, Torquesim, Tolis, Q4xp, rotste, etc, there are some real gems in xplane that make it for me the simulator of reference, it depends on what you are looking for.

That’s the reason why I asked you what is important in a sim for you. Perhaps you can explain what kind of experience you are searching for. I personnally have addons for 1000$ for MSFS but don’t use it anymore because i realized that I prefer to « maintain » XP12 that is more appealing to me. Does this answer help you? Otherwise you can perhaps be more specific about what kind of experience/addons would make it worth for you.

I personally am back and forwards with the two sims and I’ve also spent a few quid on FS2020 which I really do like but I keep having to touch base with the Hotstart 650 Challenger in  XP12 just to experience that ‘Sensation’ that ‘feeling’ XP12 offers….looking forward to the updates what are coming and I think long term XP12 is we’re I’ll spend the time for sure…that Challenger is in a league of its own!

Absolutely!! However, it depends what you expect from a flight simulator. Superficially nice visuals or mainly SIMULATION of planes. For the latter see e.g. here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here and here. And that's not even everything you can think about...

I'm surprised how wide is the general audience for the different simulators out there. In addition to the "star" MSFS2020, people are still with FSX (yes, the old pal), P3D with its latest version v6, and X-P. That's good for the competition and it seems there's no absolute winner.
