The New Flightsim.to

After many complaints they put the "My updates" button on the main page, but you still need to scroll down and click it to check if you have any updates. I preferred the bell on top right with the number of updates as we had on the old version too. If many people ask for it I believe they will bring it back.

Yay! The bell is back! Just got a notification of a new update! Looks like they are listening to the users, I sent feedback about the bell yesterday, many others must have done the same, and now it's back.

It appears the update broke a lot more functionality than I thought. FS.to has broken and corrupted the downloads for many liveries (arguably hundreds) and uploads by removing the ability to have several uploads. For creators (like myself) who like to have livery packages or separate downloads, FS.to has either deleted the multiple uploads or the downloads are corrupted. As an example, Aanerud's Norwegian livery packs, which totaled 40+ liveries, have now been reduced to ~10. Links have also stopped working in descriptions.

Nearly every other flightsim addon uploading site allows for multiple uploads. They're a great way to allow users to download what they want instead of forcing everyone to download large file sizes for things they don't care for; case in point: having a separate 8K and 4K version of a livery for the Fenix A320 or individual registrations for a livery package so users can download the specific airframe they'd like instead of having to install several gigabytes of liveries they may not care for. Furthermore, we no longer can use "-" or "." in our file names when uploading, so we no longer can specify details in our downloads (I liked to include things such as the version number (i.e., "v1.3") so users knew what version they were downloading).

Not too long ago, FS.to floated the idea of removing the ability for creators to delete their own files with TOS changes. But now FS.to has deleted user files without permission. It makes all FS.to's "We love our creators!" and "We support our creators!" PR seem awfully disingenuous.

The version number should be included in the manifest.json file and in the changelog, not in the file name, but some uploaders didn't do that. I like this change, it facilitates for people using Addons Linker when updating because we just have to delete the old file and replace it with one with the same name and it keeps being active (or inactive) in Addons Linker.

While that's a nice option, creators usually have to cater to everyone. Think of it as "having to deal with the lowest common denominator." Not everyone uses an addon linker; not everyone will have an XYZ setup; not everyone will have this certain modification to an addon, etc. Therefore, I like to have as bare-bones an installation as possible. Including something like "v1.2" in the .zip for the download makes it easy for users to decern updates and organize their files. For liveries for addons like the PMDG, you'd have to run content through the PMDG's operation center (which I believe will override if you reinstall an updated livery), and you don't include a manifest.json. I mostly paint and work with PMDG products, so I don't venture into things with addon linkers.

Updates aside, it's still frustrating that other FS websites allow it yet FS.to does not.

Nothings perfect.

I can't remember a time when a flightsim website changed its look and feel, where there was not an immediate outbreak of agonized screams. 🙀

I especially remember Orbx simply deleting complaining posts, while members wavered between the changes either being a nightmare or alternately, the bestest thing evah'.

Even the changeover to the current format of Avsim was accompanied with the same, not to mention controversies about the ability to leave likes (Oh, no!) and currently we still have posts about the ads/popups....

So.....

If there are any especially egregious errors, Flightsim.to will almost certainly fix them; and in time all of this will recede (Of course) into history, much like the angst over the X-plane UI change. (Oh, no! It looks like a game, now!)

Temepest/Teapot. 🤷‍♂️

I agree. People often don't like change. However, in my opinion, there's a bit of a difference between changing the UI or adding ads or popups and failing to adequately test and causing users to lose their work. I'm not an expert in coding and whatnot, but I can't think of a way for Flightsim.to to somehow restore the deleted and lost content from creators, especially since the "entire backend has been rewritten and is therefore not compatible with the previous version of the site." If they can do so, that'd be fantastic.

Its rare, but occasionally I have a HD go bonky' and stuff gets corrupted. Its a pain, but that's when (hopefully) I have backups somewhere, and now its time to reinstall and reorganize.

Stuff happens.

How many of us have Flightsim or windows installs that go bad, and we end up deleting and starting over?

Again, stuff happens.

We pick up the pieces, help FS.to to correct anything they missed and are not determined to keep the new way, and we move on.

For me, one of the reasons Avsim is not the place we all go for addons anymore is that the download site (for whatever reason) never changed with the times, and is now pretty much a museum piece.

Flightsim.to is the bright, shiny new car, and I hope it never gets to a point where it (again, for whatever reason) no longer allocates the resources to stay fresh and at the head of the pack, ready to try new things.

I'm not doing anything rash at this time but they really wrecked some of the creator's functionality. How long should I wait?

That's not really my call. Some people, like me, are going to take this fairly casually and we're willing to give as much time as necessary. Others have already threatened to throw in the towel.

Either way, I think we'll all survive. 🙂

Now that everyone has calmed down, had a beer and found something else to do...

Going back to the site seems just fine to me. Just takes a mere minute to adjust to some changes.

I wonder how many more angry flight simmers are going to freak out over a website changing a little bit....

They already brought back some features by popular demand. The  first version was very bad.

I tried to install several PMDG liveries tonight via the OPS manager.  None of them worked, they all failed.

What does this have to do with the redesign?

I don't see anybody 'freaking out', just some people having an opinion on the functionality of the new site, which isn't just 'a little bit' of a change as you say.
They are quite big changes, and it is perfectly fine for people to express an opinion about it.

Personally, I will get used to the new site, and it isn't the end of the world, but I don't like it compared to the old site, and it isn't just about not liking change, as I am actually a part of 'change management' in my job.  Just an opinion, and I am not freaking out!
