Is MSFS 2024 going to be a subscription model?

Seems like you aren't sure what they are going to do? Anyway, I didn't say it would be on subscription.

Nah, I am sure but funny enough a sub would have made more sense than the model you're suggesting. That's a recipe for a mess. They just said the sim will only stream what you need. So if i load up a flight in the Caribbean, it will stream that region only and so on. This isn't about gatekeeping content. Imagine you had various airport add-ons but you couldn't use them because you have to buy the countries they're in or something like that. Makes zero sense.

...I would HAPPILY cough up $30/month for the Premium, unlimited hours subscription.

Asobo and MS, please do not listen to this man. He is unwell lol.

Time will tell.

You really do like to worry a lot. You've skipped over a sub and landed on a weird paid content model. You were wrong about the sub in 2019, you were wrong about add-on incompatibility in June and trust me, you're wrong about this lol. And you know what? That's a good thing! it's very good that none of those things happened 🙂

You're not really concerned about paying for a subscription are you?  "Serious" flight sim users are a tiny niche market and as such it is ultra reasonable to assume they will be willing to cough up $$ to continue to use the sim I described above.  Xbox and other quite likely casual simmers will only provide so much income via Game Pass and they will dwindle over time as well.  To retain the steady users I can appreciate the need for more income than comes out of the Marketplace.  Again, look at KDEN with it's lousy 511 buyers and what, MS made 25% of those sales or whatever the number is?  That and all the rest (many titles there sell very meager numbers) won't pay the rent and power let alone the salaries of 180 skilled members of the team.  I think a subscription is absolutely in the cards and again, only if the sim I described is implied.  Compared to the $19 I pay Netflix, and $$ for several other streaming services, the fact is I get a whole lot more out of the sim than the streaming services so $30 is very reasonable.  I stream it far longer than the one movie or show we watch in the evenings.

How do you know only 511 people bought KDEN from the marketplace?

You got me there it was 511 who took the time to rate it.  It's all besides the point anyway.  My agenda is to bring the sim up to the level I described and if a subscription is required to sustain it, I'm all in.  The rest of the discussion is idle prattle.

Since MS/ASOBO announced that they are moving (almost) every thing to the cloud and they will continue to update MSFS 2020 as well, does that mean the upcoming MSFS 2024 going to be a subscription model?.

Probably not? 🤷‍♂️

I’m having some bad deja vu from the lead up to the release of MSFS2020.

All I say is if they went subscription I would easily jump into a alternative (X.... or P...) or would quit easily.

lol I suspected that's what it was and I appreciate your honesty. It isn't beside the point though because it indicates that quite a lot of people bought that add-on and it is therefore counter to the point you were trying to make.

They do not need a sub to sustain it. Really, the only far fetched thing on your list was #6 since servers can go down no matter how much money you throw at them. For everything else, they revamped the architecture and hired a lot more people, with the money they've made from 2020. I mean Jorg has spoken a lot about how lucrative 2020 has been a number of times. He said MS expanded his budget because of this. Nothing indicates a need for a sub. They want to do everything you've listed and 2024 is the way they're confident they can make it happen.

LOL you went and looked just like I did.  That's your fantasy Krakin--you don't really know what the future holds at all though you like to pretend you do.  You have no idea how many actual dedicated users, casual users, buyers of addons from the Marketplace etc there are all of that is conjecture supported by vague comments from the marketing department.  Further, of all of the items I mentioned there has been little to no details like I took the time to define in any comments by Asobo.

I put this to you and you avoided replying, so again, You're not really concerned about paying for a subscription are you?  THAT, was my point, that I am more than willing to pay for the sim I described on a subscription basis.  Would you?

The reason they are going to a thinner client and moving more of "their stuff" to the cloud rather than storing locally on our computers is to improve install footprint, performance, efficiency etc etc (all as outlined and stated in their FSExpo presentation and subsequent interviews, see links below).  So firstly, that is not a reason or precursor to them therefore going to a subscription model. Secondly, they have not gone to a subscription model all this time since the 2020 release, and given all what they've said in previous Q&As on this subject, and what they've said recently on the how/why/what of v2024, their success financially with v2020, the fact that they plan to keep v2020 going and supported after v2024 releases, etc etc all lead me to tilt very heavily to "NO" being the answer to your question.

What might the implications be for processing requirements in terms of client hardware?
