Is MSFS 2024 going to be a subscription model?

Yes...Will charge your card every time you fire it up...

I'm already having to buy new copies of payware aircraft whenever I crash one, so that isn't going to be much different.  I've bought that darn PMDG DC-6 14 times over now!!!!

Well done penta, another troll of the day award handed out.

relax my friend, it is just a discussion based on widely available info (like FAQ for example), nothing more nothing less.

As I said, friend, in this case you are making an implied suggestion (confirmed by your analytic lead-in).  Otherwise why would you ask others to provide a source to show otherwise?

They make the bulk of their money from the marketplace and they have already said a few times that maintaining the cloud infrastructure is cheap for them. There's really no reason at all to think things will be different for 2024.

thanks for your reply and I hope we will all learn from this very productive/informative reply down here,

many thanks for the well laid opinion, my respect, and I hope they are going that path, if not I'm still OK with it 🙂 .

If in 2024 MS/A delivered the "Complete Sim" this time including....

  1. All fundamental METAR/Weather integration issues solved, including having default ATC direct one to the current METAR based runway choices, corroborated w/ RW traffic.  Cloud impacts on flight dynamics included as well, of course.
  2. Expanding the range of voxel resolution such that folks with the hardware could access a broad range of distinct cloud morphologies thru a slider (which I maintain depend largely on increasing voxel resolution bigtime).  This may well be in the cards if the statements about massive performance improvements come to pass.
  3. ATC was improved to include AI generated regional voicings complete with regional ATC nuances (an appropriate task for AI/machine learning); and all basic ATC functions worked as well as 3rd party options might.
  4. Geolocation driven seasonal vegetation change implementation
  5. Default airports were upgraded to reflect accurate taxiway and gate labels and types, etc
  6. Server support kept ahead of demand at all times

...I would HAPPILY cough up $30/month for the Premium, unlimited hours subscription.

Subscriptions for reliable income and most of all I want MSFS, especially the evolved one described above, to be fully sustainable.  Imagine with the fantasy sim described above, having 100,000 users signed up, we're looking at an annual income of $36,000,000.  With the completeness envisioned above I can see P3D/XP coming over in droves as well, so that 100K users might become 200,000 users or more...

Near as I can tell I've gotten gobs more out of the lousy $119 I spent on MSFS 3y ago.  I can't imagine how they can sustain the project without a steady stream of serious income.

And I will add the idea that sales of the sim plus revenues from the Marketplace, especially the latter, pale in comparison to what subscriptions would generate.  Go have a close look at airports like KDEN, which was heinously ruined sometime after release w/ severe elevation defects, so therefore are much more likely to be purchased by many users--a grand total of 511 copies were sold as of a few weeks ago, so do the math on the percentage of cut taken by MS.  FAR less for other big airports that didn't have the big defects KDEN had.  Most people here don't even support the Marketplace and will go to the 3rd parties directly.  Another giant plus of subscription basis is this:  the sim MUST be kept up big time in terms of functionality and performance else people won't hang around, so there is built-in incentive to maintain quality.

No, and it wouldn’t even make sense. Unless you are talking about subscribing to Game Pass.

You know something, Jarm, for your sake, I hope they bring a subscription model. Just so your dream can finally come true lol.

Seems like you aren't sure what they are going to do? Anyway, I didn't say it would be on subscription.

MSFS is already on subscription-based access. It's called Game Pass. While I -- and probably most of the visitors to AVSIM -- have purchased MSFS outright, having a less expensive monthly subscription available is an appealing option for many. If in the future, however, Microsoft should force users to buy a monthly subscription -- and if this subscription is substantial in cost -- MSFS2024 will nonetheless be the absolutely preeminent and dominant flight simulator of the coming decade. Get over it.

Because they answered (NO) with complete confidence without proof, everything is still hanging in the air to me, but there are signs leaning slightly to a (yes), up to now at least 🙂 .
