December 3, 20232 yr Long story short my fuel temp drop in flight. Shortly after engine stopped. I was a bit slow to react but managed several tries of air restart. Unfortunately, "starter" circuit braker tripped. Resetting didn't brought "no joy". Eventually my battery drained and I opted ditching! Well I'll be darn I'm still alive ! December 3, 20232 yr This is interesting! At what temperature would the fuel freeze? I have never heard of that. And what type of fuel would the Meridian take? All fuel contains some degree of water apparently, even if it is a very slight amount. The B777 that crash landed (successfully) short at Heathrow was caused by some water freezing in the fuel filter, blocking it and causing fuel starvation. Rob (but call me Bob or Rob, I don't mind). I like to trick airline passengers into thinking I have my own swimming pool in my back yard by painting a large blue rectangle on my patio. December 3, 20232 yr 37 minutes ago, bobcat999 said: This is interesting! At what temperature would the fuel freeze? I have never heard of that. And what type of fuel would the Meridian take? Kerosene, more specifically Jet A or Jet A-1. 37 minutes ago, bobcat999 said: All fuel contains some degree of water apparently, even if it is a very slight amount. This is true, and can be a problem too, but the reason the fuel freezes isn't so much because of the water - it's simply that the hydrocarbons themselves that make up the fuel become solid at these low temperatures. Edit: For an intuition of how kerosene behaves at low temperatures: Kerosene is chemically similar to the paraffin wax that some candles are made of. In the same way that candle wax becomes solid when it cools, kerosene also turns into a waxy solid, just at far lower temeraturss (around -50 C, as others have noted). It is an interesting incident actually, and I will have a read up on it. It could have turned out a lot worse over a populated area. I dread to think of the consequences if they hadn't made it to the flat ground before the runway threshold. Rob (but call me Bob or Rob, I don't mind). December 3, 20232 yr By the photo, give the fuel time to defrost, then fire her back up on the water.
