December 14, 20232 yr Glad to know XP is getting better and better. It's a pity it's not getting cheaper and cheaper as well because, if it was, I might buy it.
December 14, 20232 yr Better be quick then, the old price still applies to till the turn of the year: https://www.x-plane.com/desktop/buy-it/ 7950X3D + 7900 XT + 64 GB + Linux | 4800H + RTX2060 + 32 GB + Linux My add-ons from my FS9/FSX days
December 15, 20232 yr A slight wrinkle for those holding breath for fake frames. It's more than likely that if LR pursues frame gen, they'll go with FSR3. They tend to swing towards the opensource/cross platform solutions. FSR3 was finally released today and "Vulkan support is in development and will be released in a future version." If it does ever happen, it will be a while yet. Friendly reminder: WHITELIST AVSIM IN YOUR AD-BLOCKER. Especially if you're on a modern CPU that can run a flight simulator well. These web servers aren't free...
January 9, 20242 yr Maybe I didn't get around on ground level outside the airport perimeter often enough before, but I've noticed that 12.0.9's recut default scenery (same source data, different processing algorithms) can be absurdly detailed! And the sky still manages to impress when the conditions are right. Can't wait to see what 12.1.0 will have in store. First time I noticed what appears to be a faint supralateral halo(?; sun is rear of the camera) on a clear, cold day. The lighting at atmosphere is superb as the sim almost feels as cold as the real world. 🤣 7950X3D + 7900 XT + 64 GB + Linux | 4800H + RTX2060 + 32 GB + Linux My add-ons from my FS9/FSX days
January 10, 20242 yr Ah the scenery update - that will be tonight's little download saga - Telco willing!
January 10, 20242 yr It'll be around 18 GB (at least that's what I had to download). 7950X3D + 7900 XT + 64 GB + Linux | 4800H + RTX2060 + 32 GB + Linux My add-ons from my FS9/FSX days
January 11, 20242 yr Download for the scenery update came in for me at about 65GB. Somehow it all looks different - think the depiction of landclass has improved. Road placement better but still a bit stick on in places. AI behaviour at aiports can be a bit frantic and confused at times. Scenery Objects better- not sure - depends where you are in the simulated world. Sky-lighting and weather definitely improved. Still have niggledy issues about the sim not exiting cleanly on QUIT. Removed XWorld from a couple of areas by the way - default sim is to my eye better in some areas like the Pacific and Oceania.

Same source data, different interpretation algorithms so yes, it can look better in parts. 7950X3D + 7900 XT + 64 GB + Linux | 4800H + RTX2060 + 32 GB + Linux My add-ons from my FS9/FSX days
January 15, 20242 yr The scenery recut isn't all good news...the new version of PANC/Anchorage Intl in the recut is riddled with terrain anomalies--the first 6000' of rwy 07R looks like the ski jumping ramp at Lake Placid, and the north cargo ramp terrain is also simply awful. I hope this is a one-off and not representative of a broader cross-section of the scenery. FWIW, installing the last XP11 approved version from the gateway, which is built with a flatten, cured the PANC problem. The latest scenery recut is just a placeholder for what's coming in the next few updates. Not sure if it's going to be kept as some kind of foundation, but new scenery is definitely coming.

They're going to improve on what has been added. Some official statements: Some additional information regarding the last update. - This is not a radical change in scenery. We acknowledge the community demand for better scenery! - A "recut" is where we've fed additional parameters and requirements on our scenery engine to export into DSFs - Some obvious improvements that can be witnessed are areas such as "EGLC" where the surrounding autogen, forests, mesh and water more accurately reflect the surrounding scenery Edited January 15, 20242 yr by GoranM
