It did like a charm, however it reset all the changed settings which of course can't remember in the first place 🙂

Did you auto update from one of the test versions and it did this? When it updates this way it does a quick install that does not reset settings (ie. it does not do a clean install).

If you updated from 0.4.4.5, it does reset all the app specific settings (specifically ConfigAppVersion, TestMode, OpenWindow, RememberWindowPos, windowTop, windowLeft, windowIsVisible and the new UpdateOption and TestUpdates) when it creates the new common config file but all of your expert settings should have remained the same.

The only way it should reset all your settings is if you downloaded and ran the installer directly and ticked Clean Install, otherwise all other installation methods should retain your expert settings.

If this is not the case, please tell me what version you updated from and what update steps you took, including any installation options you chose, and I will look into it.

So are you saying that even though TLOD gets backed off by 100 from the FPS cap breaching TLOD level, which should give plenty of performance headroom, that you are still getting stuttering while holding that TLOD level or is the stuttering only when TLOD is being auto reduced when you pan the external view?

If this is a common experience, I could change Hr+ to be numerical so that the higher the number the more conservative the final TLOD will be. eg. a setting of 1, 2 or 3 etc could result in an FPS cap breaching TLOD backing off of 50, 100, and 150 TLOD etc respectively. Note, the process will still need to initially seek the FPS cap breach to know how far to back things off, so the tuning phase will still be required.

Alternatively, I could just limit the amount of TLOD extra on the ground to +100 in IFR mode, regardless of how high it could go.

Before I go making any such changes, it would be helpful if you could make a quick video demonstrating exactly what the issue is with TLOD being too high at huge airports, with AutoFPS showing on top of MSFS so I can see what is going on with both. Thanks.

I don't know until I do some more in-depth testing. Since CIV7 released sometime last week, I haven't used the sim 😉 But I got back into the sim tonight, and I'll keep an eye on things and report back if I discover anything useful.

Btw, I just made a video about performance and image quality (my two favourite subjects lol) where I tested things at iniBuilds Dubai in 2024. I didn't use AutoFPS, but instead set TLOD to 200. Interestingly, FPS was not too bad, even with BATC with maxed out AI traffic. I did notice however, that performance was worse in the cockpit than in drone view. FPS probably dropped by about 10.

So I'm thinking it's a sim thing, not an AutoFPS thing. Obviously everything around is not fully rendered all the time. So when changing the view, there's always going to be a performance hit as things need to be suddenly rendered. I think this is especially an issue at those huge payware airports.

It's strange though, that backing off TLOD by 100 from the FPS cap breaching TLOD level, does not provide enough headroom.

...

I'll do a quick test video and report back.

EDIT:

I'm very behind on my AVSIM notifications, and just realized that you mentioned my user name on Thursday. As I'm not up to date on this thread, you might already have resolved the issue.

Welcome back! I was wondering why I had not heard from you in a while 😄

This is the very thing I am not able to fathom with users experiencing this issue. By backing off TLOD by 100 at the end of the process, users should be achieving significant performance headroom so I am not understanding why FPS drops below the FPS cap so easily with a quick pan of scenery in external view, unless it is not TLOD that is causing these FPS drops.

I must admit I have most of my experience with this feature in MSFS 2020, which is often CPU limited when performance is lowest, whereas 2024 seems to be GPU limited much more often and perhaps that explains whey TLOD Base + works so well for me and not for others using 2024 most, if not all of the time. TLOD may not be the droid we are looking for with this in 2024 so it is something I will need to consider when looking at this.

I don't think I even need to make a video. I just did a short test session at iniBuilds Dubai. Parked at a gate, Fenix A320, aircraft with APU on. MSFS2024. No traffic, TLOD 200 (AutoFPS not running).

By changing between panning around in the cockpit, external view and drone cam, the FPS changed between around 55 to 115! The best situation was in drone view at ground level, looking straight up into the sky. The worst was jumping back into the flight deck and zooming in on the PFD.

I just don't think it's possible that AutoFPS can alleviate this huge change in FPS. It's related to scenery rendering when changing views. Perhaps if TLOD is set to 25 or something (at a high quality huge airport like this), it could provide enough headroom to provide a stutter-free experience when changing views a lot.

I hope we found the droid we're looking for! If not - we'll just keep looking 😅

One more thing: Just panning around in the cockpit. When "looking" straight up, towards the top of the overhead panel, FPS is around 100. Looking down at the pedestal, FPS is 84. And this is after letting FPS settle for a few seconds after changing the view.

So, even when no scenery can be seen, there seem to be changes in scenery rendering.

That scenery’s optimization is not very good. Wild FPS fluctuations. I’m really hoping other developers aren’t intimidated by iniBuilds and can produce their own versions (I’m looking at you FlyTampa).

Good test.  I am running a measly 3070ti but with a AMD 7950X.  I can only run 100 TLOD & OLOD at typical airport without stutter.  TLOD at 200 would be the kiss of death and this in clearly GPU and VRAM limited not the CPU.  The aircraft makes a difference with the C-172 using 1 GB less VRAM than the B-787.  With only 8GB, 1 GB is a big deal.... hence my interest in auto_fps.  Looking to replace the GPU with a 5080 but not sure if even that will cut it.

It was a test version (8), however when installing previously the 'clean install' was checked (likely all checked IIRC). That may have carried over inadvertently...

I didn't know that. To be honest I rarely go there as it's so far from anywhere else - and I don't have much patience for long flights 🙂 I just wanted to check it out as I just upgraded to the enhanced version for 2024. And it's a huge airport that impacts performance a lot. In fact, it was pretty much unusable in 2020 with FSHud, even with a modest amount of traffic. With BATC in 2024, I can use much higher traffic settings and still get decent performance. Which I do experience in general in 2024 - better performance in those really demanding situations.

But I probably should have used another example.

@Reset XPDR I'll keep monitoring the issue at various airports and see if there's huge FPS fluctuations other places as well. It'll be great if other AutoFPS enthusiasts can do the same - as I'm stuck in video editing hell (takes forever!), and then will probably retreat back to my "just one more turn" obsession 😉

What do you mean? Because I tried to help with an issue? Because I mentioned CIV? To be frank, Frank… It’s not the first time you voice your opinion on what should be said in this thread and not. Perhaps you’re a bit out of place doing that?

I was about to post this anyway, but I have created a discussion forum here on the AutoFPS github repository webpage to discuss the upcoming 0.4.4.7 test build with the proposed TLOD Base + changes that have been discussed in this thread (very helpfully to me I might add!). I am doing this because it is a complex feature affecting a small user group (although it likely affects many more), so it is best not to clutter up this thread for now.

Anyone who is willing to participate in this test phase and provide constructive feedback in this new discussion forum is welcome. I will immediately expel anyone who attempts to do otherwise.

I'd specifically like to invite @Cpt_Piett, @Jazz, @rjack1282, @mpo910and @Jerryyyyyto participate as they have been the most vocal on this feature needing to be improved.
