Reinstall P3D - v5.3 or v5.4

Featured Replies

I am going to re-install P3D on my new PC which is a 7800X3D with 4090 GPU. Previously I had P3D v5.3 installed but as it will be a new install are there any benefits or disadvantages of going to V5.4 I read that there in some cases of temperature problems with V5.4 but is it worth trying for any benefits in v5.4.

Thanks.

Have used v5.4 for quite a few years now and can say it is very stable, also the atmospherics look pretty nice.😄

I would install V6....and if you decide to do that, do not uninstall V5 as it will be useful to make all your add ons avaible in V6...

Thanks for your replies. I think I will hold off v6 for now and go with v5.4.

Seems like I've got some re-installing to do.

Thanks

@wardp, if you’re using AIG Ai aircraft just be aware there appears to be issues with some airline BGLs and v5.4. The changes made to that version by LM were quite extensive especially in flight planning.

I was getting random freezes lasting up to 30 seconds at various places around the world. Trying to identify the BGLs responsible was impossible.

Reverting to 5.3HF2 resolved the problem. Of course if you don’t use AIG there’s no problem with 5.4.

Also 5.4 introduces a bug in reading C:Vars where an index is applied.

Suffice to say to say the bug barfs some aircraft in various ways, mostly those that use the xml tools package.

The same bug was also introduced with P3D v6, although in that instance LM did release a fix in their fourth patch.

https://prepar3d.com/announcement/2023/09/131908/

  • Fixed issue where C:Vars would not parse correctly in some cases if an index was present.

Since the bug affects aircraft I reguarly fly I've not gone past v5.3 (actually 4.5 is my main sim and I have v5.3 setup for testing).

I upgraded from 5.3 to 5.4 and have zero issues  I primarily fly PMDG a/c and occasionally Capt Sim 757 and have not encountered any problems, knock on wood.

My recommendation is 5.4.

Hopefully you still have your 5.3 install package.  LM only lets you download the latest release from the website for each version that you purchased.

Once you've logged into your P3D account, in the section titled "Prepar3d v5 Xxxxxx" click on "+Legacy Full Downloads" for previous versions of v5.  5.3.17.28160 is 5.3 HF2.  This is the best version of P3D v5 version for me.  5.4 just has too many issues on my system.

Ok guys, after having reinstalled 5.4 last night, and pushed all of my ORBX stuff as well as Active Sky P3D, I am willing to try 5.3 HF2...

Now, how can I revert to that version from a 5.4 install? Can I simply download the 5.3 HF2 Client and run it ?

Thx for any hints!!!

@jcomm, unless you’re having problems with 5.4 I fail to understand why you would want to revert.

You need to uninstall the 5.4 Client opting to keep your licence. Then install the older Client.

To be on the safe side I’d also revert to the older Content and Scenery versions. So uninstall those first, then Client last.

I'm taking the opposite route but I'm still going to have P3D 5.4 installed. I hope I don't regret it...

Thx Ray, it's mostly because of:

and having read somewhere that 5.3 HF2 didn't push so hard for the CPU on same graphics settings...

In my case I don't use, or plan to use AIG, so, that's not the factor...

Thx for the indications.

One more question: Since I installed Orbx Global, Vector, Open LC Europe, Global Airports from their Center app, into the Main Library, could the uninstall of the Content and Scenery components pose any sort of quirks ?

If I correctly understood, should I go 5.3 HF2 the sequence is:

1) Uninstall 5.4 Content and Scenery

2) Uninstall 5.4 Client

3) Install 5.3 HF2 Client

4) Install 5.3 HF2 Content and Scenery

Is that it?

Thx!

@jcomm, i understand your reasons. 👍

Yes, the sequence you listed is good. Regarding ORBX FTX Global no need to touch that if you chose not to replace default texture files. If you did then it’s a bit trickier. May be best to check ORBX forum for guidance.

Other 3rd party stuff should be fine. You may have to confirm your ASP3D licence.
