Sim Hangs at Checking for Updates

Featured Replies

Same issue here and my multiplayer friend as well. I have map enhancement, but he does not. What a pain to use task manager & reboot. Oh well, flight sim!!!~!

  • Had this a little while ago. After shutting down via task manager and restarting it started. Seems server sided issue.

  • Had the Checking for Updates problem yesterday. Did something else. Working fine today. I don't use the Map Enhancement thingy, so I'm assuming that this was some sort of server-side problem.

    No I haven't (yet hehe).

I've had a couple yesterday and one more this morning.  All after installing Map Enhancement.

I'm in windows mode so I just hit the X and closed it.  Started back up without Map Enhancement and everything is fine.

No Safe mode prompts.  Shutting down with Task Manager gets me the safe mode message.

After finally getting Map Enhancement installed I had a message saying my computer doesn't meet minimum requirements,  Started anyway and got 6 or 7 fpm and a slide show,  Went to bed and this morning turned my Kaspersky back on and everything is back to normal.  Will not use Map Enhancement although when it first came out a year or so ago I used it and had no problems.

Not worth the fuss.  Have to turn off Kaspersky Intrusion Prevention to even run it.

Exact same thing for me. Map Enhancement seems to be the culprit on my system.

I had it yesterday.  Just left it 'checking for updates' for 10 to 15 Mins and it eventually continued without issue - bit of a pain though.

Working ok today.

If you have installed the map enhancement - try this - it worked for me

Thanks guys - it proved to be a problem with the host file. I found the follopwing which made it helpful for me to resolve the issue.

This fixed it for me 5 min job:
After reading your post, I went to the FAQ of the mod on flightsim.to and followed the following:

App should restore to bing map when it close, if not, please delete The following two lines in the C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts file:

"127.0.0.1 kh.ssl.ak.tiles.virtualearth.ne t
"127.0.0.1 khstorelive.azureedge.ne t

Rebooted my machine, logged into MSFS 2020, and no issues with connections to the server, or being switched to offline

I had more than one line of each of the above, and had to save the file as 'save as' and then manually place it in the folder. Anyway, all is working well now.

Apparently if MSFS 2020 is not closed normally - it leaves these lines of code which cause the problem

I reinstalled Map enhancement after a problem the other day where it caused CTDs. Then I had checking for update issue. I had to restart PC, then uninstall Map enhancement, then reinstall it, and now hopefully everything is back to normal. Any more problems and I am going to uninstall it for good. The latest update caused all kinds of problems. I posted on the developers Gitmo page, and after over a day, I got an email showing the instruction manual, which I had already read and tried everything. I guess he thinks there is nothing wrong with his program. The other thing I noticed is that my host file, is empty even after installing Map Enhancement,, no two lines in it at all..

My view of Map Enhancement mod is that it is a great idea, but just poorly written code.  Took me two weeks just to get it installed, then it screwed up my computer.  Hopefully someone or Asobo will pick up on the idea and do it right.

I believe when you delete those two lines, that the map enhancement is not working anymore.

When you start the mod, it write into the hosts file. When you stop it, it removes the entries from the hosts files as best as I can tell. No reason why removing these lines would cause the mod not to work again the future.

You nailed it.  The hosts file is only a place holder for Map Enhancer's ip addresses.  As you say when you hit Stop it removes them.  If you don't hit Stop they are still there when you open MSFS2020 and it's going there to get it's information which is not there so it hangs up.

MSFS2020 doesn't need the hosts file because everything comes from their servers, but it checks the hosts file first and uses what is there.  That's why when you look at the hosts file everything is commented out because nothing runs that needs it.

This morning after I deleted everything to do with Map Enhancer I decided to delete those lines from the hosts file.  They were gone because I had hit Stop the last time I ran the mod.  I'm no computer geek but this is my take from my experiences this past week.

I started Map Enhancement this morning, got the low bandwidth message, then could not connect to internet, like my modem had crashed. Active Sky would not start. I uninstalled Map Enhancement, and now everything working normally. I am done with this program.

Have you by any chance recently installed the Map enhancement for Bing maps?

No I haven't (yet hehe).

Since SU15, both I and my brother-in-law have had this a couple of times.  Neither of us has the map enhancement.

In both our cases, booting up the X-box app first and leaving that open while booting up MSFS has sorted it.

Do you have the SR22T realism mod (or something similar) from fs.to? I've just seen this in a changelog:
