FYI

I have found that user created camera positions are stored at

C:\Users\'user name'\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\SimObjects\Airplanes

I wished I had known that before I reinstalled.

Have you tried to clean up the infected file using your A/V already?. You're maybe lucky and the file is able to be Ok again. I would recommend you to change your current A/V and use the default

I didn't realise that could be done. And have now added all my D drive to the exceptions to AVG and Malwarebytes but are there any folders on C drive for MSFS?

Depending on how you did your current MSFS installation, or your version (you mention you've the Store version, while I have the Steam version and had never regretted it), there're a bunch of config files on this directory: C:\Users\<YourName>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft Flight Simulator, that I have also excluded from any A/V scanning.

Cheers, Ed

Thanks Ed.   I didn't know about the Steam edition when I purchased and would probably have chosen it rather that the store edition as I cannot backup any folders getting a message "your organisation does not allow you to place this file here" and I think the steam version allows you to?

Sounds like you might have a permission problem.  Check your permissions for those folders that you can't manage.

PS - I have been using ESET as m antivirus for years.  It does cost something but I've never had a problem with it and it is very easy on resources.

My One Store folder has all permissions 'ticked' ALLOW (in Properties). I have never been able to copy from that folder and posted a question a long time ago and someone suggested that there are no problems copying using the Steam edition/version. I have no idea why.

I can't even compress/zip anything - nothing happens, no error displayed.

I wonder if it's anything to do with encryption as I can copy individual files such as camera.cfg BUT get a warning that it is encrypted and do (I want to continue.

This is the error I get when attempting to copy

Hi Jarnie,

I'm not sure but I still think your problem is a permission problem.  I have the store system and I have no problem copying various files from MSFS folders but I don't want to try to copy something into one of these folders in case I screw something up.  Your problem sounds like it's time to wipe the system and all it's pieces and do a fresh install.  Make sure that you are THE admin for your system and let the system handle installing everything.  I wish I could be of more help but not knowing how your system is setup, I'm limited to the above.

I would also think about changing antivirus systems.  The builtin windows system does work but as I mentioned above, I've been very happy with ESET and have used this system since the early 2000s without issue.

Best of luck,

Jim Driskell

I also really believe this. I’m an art director, so my everyday / work computer is a Mac, because of this, the only thing I use my PC for is flight simming. I rarely even have to go on the internet. Windows 10 is able to handle the security - no issues at all, probably easier because I don’t use it for anything else. I know other people might have more uses for their PC’s than just flying, but it certainly helps.

Thanks.  But I did that only a few days ago. It was a problem before and after the uninstall/reinstall and I checked that my D drive was completely empty before I started the reinstall. Could it be Windows related?

BTW what happens when you copy any single .cfg file (eg camera.cfg for any aircraft)? Do you get a warning that the file is encrypted?

Also I have the standard version of MSFS and I am not running as administrator.

I did a standard install using XBOX.

Hi Jarnie,

I had not trouble copying a Cameras.cfg from one of the Asobo aircraft.  However, did I read your correctly in that you are running MSFS on an xBox?  If so, I have no experience with that platform.  If you are, I'd start asking questions on the MSFS forum that covers xBox.  If you are running MSFS on a windows computer, MSFS installs lots of files on your c drive, even if you direct the main portion of MSFS to another drive.  I run MSFS on a dedicated 2TB SSD while my system runs on a 1 TB SSD c drive.

Let me know if you are running a windows computer and maybe I can help.

If an AV program takes action against a "virus" it can sometimes cause irreparable damage to an application or operating system. We had a server damaged when the AV decided the backup agent was a virus. We have the same AV & backup agent running on hundreds of servers, but that was the only one affected. We reversed the AV action, but we could not get the backup agent to work on that server again, even with assistance from the vendors of both the AV and backup agents. We ended up restoring the server from a prior backup.

I haven't run AV on my home PC since Windows 11, as the built-in Windows Defender and UAC is good enough for my needs. I recommend to my friends and family that they use a 'Standard' user account on Windows (without admin privileges) for daily use. If they install anything, they just need to enter the credentials for the admin account.

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security/application-security/application-control/user-account-control/how-it-works

Disabling UAC can help with troubleshooting. Just moving the UAC slider in the control panel to 'Never notify' doesn't disable UAC, you need to change the value of a registry key called 'Enable LUA' from 1 to 0 and reboot. The key is in this location:

    HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

When you change the value, Windows will tell you it needs to reboot. After troubleshooting, remember to re-enable UAC.

well, you are still using AV unless you specifically go in and disable Windows Defender, just FYI

Yes, I know that. But by contrast to the third party ones mentioned above it's so well integrated into the OS that you don't even need to know what it's doing really.
