Quest 3 cable link

Featured Replies

Hello all,

Just need a little information before I buy a new Quest 3.

I use my current Quest 2 in MSFS only and only use cable link.

If I buy a Quest 3 do I need to buy the highest GB storage given that I do not intend to change my gaming (MSFS) and will continue to use the cable link.

I also want to try hand tracking so can someone tell me what else I have to buy to make this happen in the cockpit for switches and rotary knobs etc. I have watched some Youtube videos and most say that

hand tracking is iffy at best. Has this improved lately?

Thanks for any information.

Quest 3 headsets have issues with the link cable (they don't work / recognize it). I have the same issues on 2 Q3 Headsets and 2 original Link cables. Just search after Quest 3 link cable issues.

Nobody could tell me what is wrong with it (Meta Support nor Asus). Have an Asus Z-590 E and worked flawlessly with my Q2.

@himmelhorse nobody knows what could lead to the issue. Some are saying that some USB C Ports do not provide enough current, some say Quest 3 does not have a compatible link cable (if you purchase now a Meta link cable, it will say "compatible with Q2" on it's cover, others say it's a SW / FW bug of some sort.....I tried realy everything that I found out there regarding power states of USB ports...... Nothing worked on my end. THIS DOES NOT MEAN IT WOULD NOT RUN ON YOUR END! Maybe you can try one out or get yours and return it if it's an issue.

I had to change my entire WiFi setup (including the router) to get Air Link to work properly (this means the router must have at least WiFi 6 / AX, be near to your Q3 so that your Q3 connects directly to it and your PC should connect through cable to your Router). Air Link should work pretty decent with this setup but although its very stable with, the best connection will still be through a cable!

Maybe post your experience and your setup when you have it.

GEK,

Thanks for your information.

The reason for thinking of updating to Quest 3 is the problems I am experiencing with Quest2 and they appear to be much the same as with Q3.

I am constantly being disconnected and rarely complete a flight these days.

I have tried about 5 different cables, including the original (optional) cable offered with the Q2.  I have just ordered a universal micro c to micro c  cable to try and I am awaiting delivery of that. I have also tried to minimize movement by strapping the cable to the headset. None of these remedies seem to work. I have increased my internet speed to 50MBS (unlimited) and that has not altered the situation in any way and of course, I am also experiencing the recent internet disconnected and restored syndrome.

I have yet to try air link but I am going to seriously look into it as I only use my headset for MSFS and flight simming. The computer is less than a meter away from where I sit so proximity should not be an issue. I would also be looking at plugging in to a charger via a high speed USB to micro c cable.

WiFi 6 could be an issue here in Indonesia (I have not seen any internet gear marked compatible with 6 and have only recently been able to upgrade to 5.  We do have electricity now but are a little slow in catching up with the world. Internet speed is slowly getting better but I am constantly reminded of the old story of my internet being so slow I am getting urgent updates on the the fact that Abraham Lincoln has been assassinated.

How do you connect your headset to the router directly ... I have never seen an internet - Micro C cable. Am I barking up the wrong tree here. I would love to know what you went through and how you achieved it as I am increasingly thinking of the Air Link route.

Head to the VR sub-forum (where this thread will soon be headed!)

I've had great results connecting to my PC over wifi using Airlink and Virtual Desktop with the Virtual Desktop Streamer app

I had to spend £100 or so on a very modern wifi AP, the exact standard required escapes me for now, but there are a few Youtube videos covering using Quest 3 with Virtual Desktop for MSFS

Put the AP as close as possible to where you sit, and connect to it using ethernet from PC

I have a quest 3, all you need is a good wifi connection and virtual desktop and thats it...works flawlessley....dont bother with a cable link ..waste of money

FWIW I’ve been running the Quest 3 with the optical link cable without issue.  The best part about the cable is you don’t need to worry about battery life.  However, if you opt for an over-the-air solution, you could also get the Bobovr strap with hot swappable battery.

i’ve gone from quest 2 to quest 3 about 6 months ago using the same link cable (the black one from Meta at @90-100 euro)

No issues sofar.

As for the hand tracking /controllers in the cockpit, forget about it. Almost every aircraft in MSFS will show the notice that vr controllers are not supported.

I just got a quest 3 this week.  I find that as long as I'm in a light setting such as a bush trip or some far flung low density scenery it works fine but when i try to run a complex airliner in a heavy place like NY even getting the VR to start up is a chore and once it's running its a laggy low frame mess even though the stereo image that's on my main monitor is smooth as silk.  I'm guessing that in those scenarios the meta app is finding it hard to encode and send the feed to the headset even though the GPU is rendering the frames just fine.  I'm wondering if something like virtual desktop can fix that but I don't have a Wi-Fi 6 router and am not really interested in buying one at this time.  Other than that, can't beat it for immersion. Even having to lean in to read the displays isn't such a bad tradeoff for what you gain by being "in" the cockpit.  Flying VFR takes on a whole new meaning. I'm in love!

Works smoothly for me with Virtual Desktop. Link cable seems to actually be a bit more "futzy".

Had no such issues with my Q2 and cable link. But looking at your setup, I think you won't be happy with the Q3 also. With the 1080Ti you won't get much out of the sim.

I ment that the router should be placed in absolute proximity of your headset so you have the best signal.

Mine was placed in a "IT connexion box" and my house is made out of rebars and concrete so thw WiFi signal is kind of shielded. I had to put some repeters to have good signal throughout my home and my Q3 (and Q2) connected to either the router or one of the repeaters (which was bad). Due to the fact that my Q3 no longer works with cable, I took the router from the IT connexion box and put it on my desk (lost the ability to use LAN cables throughout my home in this way). I also configuret the repeaters in such a way that the Q will not connect to them anymore.

So this is what I ment connecting to the router directly...not with cable.

GEK,

Just to clarify mate.

I had absolutely no problems with the 1080ti and the old system. I just wanted to update and then all my troubles started with my upgrade to an MSI X670 motherboard,  Ryzen 7 7800X3D, 32 GB (2 x 16) 4000 RAM, and an AMD 7900XTX. I retained my 1000w PSU and the old case with both sides removed and an external 12 inch desk fan to help with the cooling. Air conditioning is on at all times when the computer is on and cooling is not a problem.  The room is 6 meters x 4 meters and doubles as my music room with 2 inch sponge and carpets on the walls.

I have the equivalent of a Foxtel internet 50MBs (here it is Indihome 50MBs) and the line into the house is located on my flightsimming desk located about 2 feet from my computer. I have a modem here and I have an ethernet connection direct to the computer and I sit (with headset) about 18 inches from the computer. I have WiFi with the motherboard but currently do not have the ears fitted. I do not believe that internet connection is the cause of my issues. Everything in the room is hard wired.

When the Quest 2 is working it is truly excellent, particularly in comparison to the old computer system.

My problem is that I get constant reminders that my WiFi connection is lost (I am not connected to WiFi) and then my headset locks up but MSFS carries on as usual, most of the time. Sometimes my Headset locks up and MSFS locks up and I have to turn off the computer manually and turn back on.

I do not know if using air link will solve this problem but I am about to investigate that aspect.

I hope this clarifies what this is all about.  I am sure that an upgrade to Quest 3 is probably worthwhile but I do not want to have the same problems that I currently have.

have you tried disabling ASW in the Oculus Debug Tool?

then leave and re-enter VR mode in the sim
