parallel42 MSFS2024 Testing update

Featured Replies

This morning Flysimware, Hangar 713, MilTech, and AzurPoly (note: all are MarketPlace developers) formally announced their MSFS2024 status on their respective Discord channels. All of them cited ongoing compatibility issues with their MSFS2020 products and the day-one compatibility with 2024. //42 has different challenges but there are no substantial differences in the statements from these 5 dvelopers.

Asobo is continuing to work on making existing MarketPlace add-ons comaptible. November 19 is not looking like day-one compatibility for these listed developers.

Things will sort out but likely will be a bit longer for existing addons.

One month just isn't enough for devs to get to grips with this, especially when they will be competing for sales with other devs who have had access to the SDK for many months now.
(and that's ignoring the non-Marketplace devs who still don't have access)

One month probably isn’t enough. But to be fair though, did Lockheed Martin or Laminar Research give their 3rd party developers substantial testing time when P3D version 6 and XP 12 came out?

Based on my memory of P3D v6, I think LM just dropped it out of thin air one day.

I can't comment on P3D6 but XP12 was in beta (initially a closed beta then an public one) for months before the full release (public beta alone ran from Sept to Dec '22)

Ok, cool, I don’t remember XP 12. Maybe other people can confirm P3D v6, but I remember seeing a thread one day in the P3D forum here at Avsim that it was suddenly released.

X-Plane always release a public free choice beta before official release;  giving the opportunity to all to participate equally if they wish to be part of it.

but but but someone has been running around these forums for weeks telling us we were all crazy and accusing of disparaging MSFS and Asobo for saying these very things...  heck, they even tried to tell us in this thread what we had all seen in writing was "never said"...

Anyone who has been around MSFS long enough knows better than to expect all our add-ons to work out of the box, especially the more ancillary ones that offer HW support, 3rd party support, weather injection etc etc...  It's what some of us have been trying to calmly express and been jumped all over for even insinuating this exact scenario...

And most of us are not trying to bash or disparage MSFS or Asobo in any way, we are practically expressing our opinions.  Nothing more.

Have a Wonderful Day

With P3D there were no set timetables, though generally major releases happened every 2 years and point updates every 4-6 months. The only warning signs a new P3D version would drop would be a change on the Prepar3d.com webpage and a certain developer going on vacation.

Luckily, MSFS works well enough for me to feel no urge whatsoever to be among the first to transition to the new version. I'm happy to bide my time with this one 🙂

14900ks, RTX4090, 64Gb@6000-30-36-36-T2, Samsung 990Pro 2Tb , Dell G3223Q 32" 4k Gsync + 27" secondary monitor.
Thrustmaster Airbus Edition throttles etc, TPR pedals, MiniCockpit FCU, WinWings FCU, WinWings Orion 2 F15E, WinWings A320 sticks.

I can't imagine many people --and hopefully not any developer--thought that everything would just work completely fine in 2024 with no or very little work; if that was the case one would really have to question whether anything meaningful was improved and updated in the core sim. Of course it is going to take work to move products over to the new platform. I assume this work had been done for the products offered by Asobo and its first party developers; hence these will work out of the box. But for all others it is going to take work and work takes time. For some products this seems minimal -- A2A released a statement saying everything was basically working and they anticipate the Comanche ready on day 1 or shortly thereafter -- for other products, and especially the kind created by //42 it will involve much more work and require more time. Never did I interpret any statement to mean that every product by every developer will just automagically work in 2024. As many have said in this thread already, this is how it has been for every change in platform going back -- well in my memory -- to FS98.

You'd be surprised how many people on the 19th, intend to copy and paste everything in the MSFS 2020 community folder into the MSFS 2024 community folder and expect all the addons to work perfectly, because Microsoft/Asobo have said that 'virtually all addons will work'

I always warned on the MSFS forum about this addon compatibility not being precisely on day 1 and not the current version of the add-on. If you intend to drag and drop your addons into the 2024 community, at least have a very low expectation they will work so you won't be disappointed later. Some may work without serious bugs, some may work partially with several bugs and others may not work at all. And I would also point out that using an officially unsupported version of an addon can cause problems and bugs with the simulator.

I've posted on the MSFS forum, statements about addon compatibility from developers, including this one from Parallel 42, which was the most important one so far. But it seems that some people have simply chosen to bury their heads in the sand and blindly believe the statement that 'virtually all addons will work', believing this compatibility is with addons 'out of the box', without needing an update.

I feel that there will be a lot of frustration from the 19th onwards when people see that their favorite addons in the current version are not compatible with MSFS 2024. Numerous posts on the forums complaining that addon X is bugged or doesn't even load in MSFS 2024.

But my biggest concern is that people will complain to addon devs about this, especially when some have already announced their addons will need compatibility updates. Or even someone who filled the MSFS 2024 community with a hundred unsupported addons, which caused some problem or bugs with the simulator and that person come to the forums to complain as if it were a problem with MSFS 2024 itself.

Ya not quite understanding some of the fretting going on lately 🙂... MSFS 2020 will still be perfectly usable after 2024 releases. Those who are curious or wanting to try the 2024 capabilities and are ok with its default fleet can try them all out right after the new sim releases, even if the initial release is bug-ridden, all the while having a stable 2020 sim platform to use. Those who are averse to initial release bugs and teething issues, and/or absolutely need certain add-ons to work, just need to wait until that threshold is met in 2024 🤷‍♂️

It is all about setting expectations correctly. As long as you aren't counting on a polished new sim on the 19th you won't be disappointed. I won't buy it on the 19th until I can be reasonably sure doing so won't mess up 2020. I will be VERY happy if things are in good shape by January. Very bold and ambitious plans. These guys are doing an amazing job. But they just need time.

Marketplace will be disabled at launch due to some of these issues they don't want people buying stuff that might be broken, but you'll still be able to access stuff you already own.

I think that's a good approach. Devs would be rushing their products otherwise.

It's all about people's expectations and MS/Asobo have gone out of their way to make people expect that almost everything will "just work" on 19th

I can understand why they might have done that but it looks like the reality isn't going to meet that expectation.
