Back to FS2020 this morning!

Featured Replies

After multiple attempts with limited success and shall we say some rather humorous artifacting when I did get it to work I have decided to boot up FS2020 and doing a smooth and trouble free flight.  You know the old saying?  If it "ain't broken don't fix it" seems to apply well here.  Also I am deeply concerned just how damaging this could end up being on our hobby?  It has seen tremendous growth but has always sort of been walking on egg shells in many respects.  FS2024 is jut another wrench in our spokes that we really don't need.  Now we have a confetti of developers going one direction or the other yet we currently don't even have a stable new platform.  I am not confident Asobo/M$ will actually address these issues in any meaningful way in a timely matter.

At this point I am not sure what I am going to do?  I would like a refund for failing to deliver the product I had paid for.  On the other hand they will eventually get it right (maybe).  For now I will just continue to enjoy FS2020 has I always have and wait for it to be fixed!

I am also waiting. It might take longer I expected. And in the mean time we have FS2020. It is not perfect but seems to be much better than two days ago 🙂

Our hobby is not dying. Some sim pilots might turn away from this genre but that´s ok.

I remember when they released Flight. That was the time when I really was worried about the future of flight simming.

Yeah, I have refunded my aviator edition from Steam. Had 11 hours and only played a total of 1 hour in all that time. The other deciding factor was how hot it made my computer run! Even with most things turned down to medium it continued to run hot and had my room uncomfortably warm. My GPU is a Nvidia 3070, not the best, I know but I can't run a game that keeps my room that toasty. Even if it is getting cold outside.

Am sitting here this morning watching the stupid intro video loop while the "Activating..." bar crawls along. This is just absurd, there's' no way waiting 5 minutes, much less 15 or 30 minutes to play a sim is acceptable. I am a software engineer, and when we do a new release there is a notion of "regression", if the new release takes longer than the previous (ie, 2020) to load, in my book that's a regression. They might make grandiose claims about the benefits of "streaming" the world content, how it reduces our local data footprint... blah blah blah .... but if we can't get into the sim in less than a lunch-breaks time, then its fatally broken IMHO!

On my PC (with 2.5Gbps connection) it takes 2 minutes and 15 seconds to load. So that is much faster than 2020 loads for me. But...2.5Gbps connection speed. YMMV!

I managed to get it booted up into a semi playable state this morning but it took a long while.  Managed to get it configured to my liking but some things (okay probably many) are really not working correctly.  I set it for 2020 Keyboard option which was an improvement over the 2024 default key commands but in reality its not really working correctly.  For example using F5-F8 for flaps I can only go full flaps down or full flaps up.  One of my biggest pet peeves is when they tinker with key commands.  I can handle a few minor changes but not a completely new keyboard assignment layout.

Also wanted to fly the Pilatus PC24 but it was nowhere to be found.  Maybe I just had bad information but I thought the PC24 was going to be one of the default aircraft?  Oh Well so I selected the CJ4.  I set up SEA-RNO for testing purposes.  However the UI is so horrible I could not even figure out how to tweak the payload.  I finely figured it out but the steps are absolutely ridiculous and no way you can do it from the cockpit as far as I can tell.

I took off from SEA and even though its a hand done airport I had very few terminal buildings.  Just a bunch of gates around where you would think the terminal buildings would be.  I find out that F1-F4 keys did not control thrust like it did in FS2020 even though again I have it set for FS2020 keyboard!

Last but not least I could not get it to NAV track my flight despite it being programmed into it.  I ended up just shutting it off in frustration!

It needs a lot more time to bake in the oven that is for sure!

Honestly I did not see anything wrong with FS2020.  If they needed to come up with some sort of expansion enhancement bringing in new features and that involved a monetary payment in order to keep the dream alive I would be okay with it.  An entirely new platform at this time that is ironically not much different is really harmful to our hobby and not necessary.

I am sure my frustrations will be fixed eventually all this will be distant memory but right now its about as Bad as it Gets!  Its totally normal to be frustrated with a new sim and some push back is normal but usually you warm up to it pretty quickly.  I am not getting those vibes with this one.  I feel its fatally broken and its going to take A LONG time to fix!

Heads need to roll at Asobo/M$ and I want the option for refund.  I will consider it again when its ready to be taken out of the oven.  Just go back to FS2020 and all its happiness we will just forget this horrible idea before its too late.

Then you are lucky. I have 1 Gbps (even a lot more then average) and it is a lot slower then FS2020.
Asobo/MS should make their design based on the average bandwith users have, see this: List of countries by Internet connection speeds - Wikipedia

I have 1G as well I think, I do/did not think the issue was some data load, its saying "activation", but whatever...

I also have gotten into the sim this morning after that wait, the next hurdle is configuration, have worked that out... well, mostly, and am now actually starting the career path.

I am hoping that this startup time gets "fixed"!

Interesting about the load times.  I have a slow connection because of where I live the most I can get is 50 Mb. 2024 loads in at about one minute and 45 seconds, which is about 6 times faster than what 2020 was taking. I have also, surprisingly, had no bandwidth warnings or issues loading textures.

MSFS 2024. Primary Planes: Black Square TBM850, Duke, Baron, Caravan; A2A Comanche; FSReborn Phenom; Fexix A321; PMDG 737-7, 777: Utilities: Active Sky (Passive Mode); BATC, FSLTL.

If we had inibuilds A321LR and A330 to be ported to 2020 I would stay with 2020 ONLy.

I'm 150% positive that things will be sorted out by mid-2025 and also I hadn't had any hope for miraculous 11/19 release. It was very paradoxical to read all those "Goodbye FS2020" from the forum's veterans.

In the meantime, enjoy FS2020 with Fenix/PMDG, new iFly MAX, many sceneries, traffic etc.

cant run fs2020 here either...low bandwith error...I have one of the best internet connections money can buy but I have low bandwith FS2020 tells me....so I cant fly either of the bloody simulators....how pathectic is that hey....bloody microsoft ....pathectic....
