I'm sure she did. Once having climbed above the storm, everything turned tranquil and relaxed!

It was a very moving short story.

This will be controversial, but it's my opinion and I'm not going to debate with anyone.  I'm curious if anyone agrees, though.

First, I'm not a chauvinist and have the greatest respect for women and I believe that they can do *almost* anything a man can do and just as well.  My wife continually impresses me with her abilities and we've been together for nearly 30 years.

However, I just wouldn't feel safe with a female pilot.  In general, most women don't have a good sense of direction and don't have the situational awareness that most men do.  They are also more reckless when they drive compared to men, at least in my experience.

I don't doubt that there are some women who can make great pilots, but I just don't trust the airlines and govt. authorities to really ensure that they are as qualified as they should be considering the recent initiatives to get more women into certain careers at all costs.

Sorry if I've offended anyone, but maybe someone will prove me wrong.

Very controversial. 😲 I've see no evidence that lady pilots are any less well trained than male pilots.

I do understand your point though. When I walk down the street everyday and find myself having to dodge out of the way of ladies with their faces locked on a smartphone screen, oblivious to who might be in front of them, it does make me raise an eyebrow. And 90% of the time it is ladies of ages up to about 40. Rarely is it a man. I guess it's the multitasking that the the female brain is supposed to be good at, but I wonder if its doing many things less than well rather than one thing well. Yes, driving too seems to be an area where the ladies have issues, although slower so safer. My daughter is exceptional at everything she does... but she found driving very hard, and still isn't that competent.

Where I think your concerns may lie, is it terms of aircraft emergency scenarios and if the female brain is able to handle such severe emergencies the same way the male brain  can. We have all seen the videos of severe turbulence with the ladies screaming and in a panic, and the men sitting there like its a normal flight. I don't think we have the data to do the research to determine if the sexes are equal in terms of handling emergency situations, or the courage to conduct such research.

But yes, very controversial in this day and age, and I hope any ladies reading this understand that we have great respect for the female sex and their capabilities, but it is true that the male brain and female brain do function differently. Both males and females are good at some things and not so good at others. Together we compensate for each others weaknesses.

Great video. Unfortunately user comments are disappointing and disrespectful to woman.

Like my mother used to say:

“ If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say it.”

I don’t know why it’s that way where you are, but here I see that walking while staring obliviously at  a phone is 50-50% male/female, but also under 40.

No they aren't disrespectful to women.

It would be illogical to presume that male and female brains, that do have anatomical differences, would function identically and generate the same predispositions. Men are the ones that mostly start wars... is that disrespectful to men, or factually correct? Men aren't as good at multitasking... is that disrespectful to men, or factually correct? Men's brains only have verbal centers on one side of the brain, the female brain has verbal centers on both sides and are thus women are better communicators... is that an insult to men, or factually correct?

As I said... "Both males and females are good at some things and not so good at others. Together we compensate for each others weaknesses. "

Women aren't examples of perfection and neither are men. We are fallible beings.

Was the same when I was in the UK. Mostly young women. I've only had one guy not watching and nearly walking into me. I am of course a sample size of one, others may have different experiences.

Back in 2004, I went to the AVSIM conference in Denver where we had the opportunity to “fly” United Airlines’ Class D simulators. I did time in both the 737 & A320 ones. The instructor  pilot in the A320 was female. I was with her for an hour and my impression was that she was a very squared away aviator. I took the opportunity to ask about her experiences coming up in the “fraternity” of flying and it was very interesting. So, if I had to choose between flying with a female or a bitter old male pilot, I’ll take the female every day 😉

Here's an interesting article:https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/male-female/201910/mens-advantages-in-spatial-cognition-mechanical-reasoning

I'm basing my opinion on mostly my own experience with my wife as well as multiple women I've known throughout my life.

It has always been my experience that women don't have a good sense of direction and easily get lost.  I can usually find my way around an area I've never been to before without a map, whereas my wife or mother are completely lost, for example.

It's also been my experience that most men can judge distances and speed better than women.  Men also tend to be more mechanically inclined, although my wife is better at this kind of stuff than me in some cases.

Of course there are exceptions.  There's no question that some women would make much better pilots than some men, but I'm willing to bet that if I test 100 men and 100 women on their piloting skills there would be a higher percentage of men who perform better.

My concern is that there has been a relentless and urgent effort over the past 25 years or so to force more women into certain careers that have historically been dominated by men.  Of course women should have equal opportunity and should not be presented with any barriers to enter into any type of career/job, but this effort has gone beyond simply making things fair and allowing women to pursue any career they wish.  There are now quotas and requirements to have a certain number of women, and even races, in critical positions such as pilots, engineers, and doctors.

The fact is that gender and race should have absolutely no place in hiring requirements - only qualifications, experience, and performance should matter.  Sadly, merit no longer enters into the equation in many instances, which makes us all worse off and less safe.

All I would ask is that the requirements and testing for pilots be absolutely equal in all aspects with respect to men and women.  There should be no special treatment in order to meet some quota.  I hope it is already this way but I doubt it.  If a woman beats out a man for the position under a merit-based system, then more power to her.

You seem to be making an assumption that SAS only employ women pilots because they are women.
This was 1969, not the last 25 years of your perception.

Your sweeping remarks about women's abilities seem to be based on a tiny sample, made up of the
women in your life, which leaves about 4,600,000,000 other women that you have not met and have no
idea about their capabilities.

I would agree that there is a pendulum that has swung too far in the direction of appointing people to jobs for
reasons that have nothing to do with their abilities, but I don't think any airline is going to allow someone to
fly their aircraft around because they are of a particular gender or ethnicity.

Goodness knows, there are countless examples of men who have risen to posts that are way above their ability
purely because they are men and so are their peers.

The glass ceiling has been broken so many times now though, with the candidate proving to be just as, or often
even more, capable than their male counterpart that most of us can see that it is the person that matters and
not the preconception.

I'll offer Jerrie Mock as a contradictory example to the above Comment made.

However, as an example of someone male or female who had no business possessing a PPL or being a PIC, I shall offer up the tragic example of "TnFlyGirl". No disrespect to the Departed, but the evidence was clear and irrefutable.
