Sound cuts off and stutter

External DAC user here .. No issues with sound in sim. But then again i'm also one of those windows 10 holdouts.

I’m using windows 11 now but it was happening on 10 and that’s why I even tried 11. I’m using the Schitt GUNNR DAC. I’ve tried straight into back of mobo with headphones jack, into usb jack, in the front of pc tower. Also I have noticed that when playing the sound through my monitors I don’t seem to hear it but it could be that it’s just too quiet to tell

  • This is caused by short term main thread saturation. I believe that it is caused by the loading of terrain tiles and photogrammetry because the sim must quickly goto the network, download the new data

  • 200 is unfortunately very high in my opinion. Add in a complex aircraft and it's just inevitable that stutters will occur regardless of how strong the hardware setup is. FPS may be good and stable tho

  • Have you tried an external DAC? I use headphones with an external DAC/AMP and have never had any sound problems.

This morning, I did a complete new installation of Windows 11, formatted all my drives, and started again as fresh as possible. All drivers are up to date, and I still have the same issue.  It doesn't seem to matter what aircraft I fly, either.  Anything from the default 172 to the Maddog all suffer the same issue of small stutters and sound popping.  It's linked to the CPU spikes I see, but I can't figure out the reason for the CPU spikes.  I've monitored my Vram. I'm only using around 80% of my 16-gig 4080.  I have 64 gig RAM, which is only around half used.  With Frame Gen on, I can easily hit between 100 and 120 FPS depending on the environment,  I lock my frames to 60 so my GPU fans are not at max speed all the time.  Nothing shows the system being heavily stressed yet these spikes accur.

Yes this is what happens with my system too.

Has anyone done a bios update to see if that could possibly help the issue?

Switching back and forth from default audio devices to main sound devices mostly solves my problem with strange sound behavior. Its also very annoying having a buttkicker with broken sounds.

I disabled the Nvidia sound devices in Windows 11 Device Manager and no longer route sound through the graphics card (5080) and my monitor. Instead, I route sound through the Realtek hardware on my motherboard (MSI Meg Z790) via an optical cable to my sound bar.  Seems to have addressed some if not all my sound issues (though when starting "hot" on the runway the sound takes a second or two to get going when the plane populates on the runway).  May be worth a try for some of you if you are routing sound through a Nvidia card and HDMI.

I have managed to fix my sound issues ...for now...

I disabled the RealTek onboard sound. Have the audio jack running from my speakers to my TV (monitor), and use that as the default device. not sure what's going on....but it seems to have cleared the popping/suttering sound issues so far.

I wonder if having BOTH Realtek and the Nvidia sound devices enabled causes issues (I noticed you have a 5090 and I have a 5080).  I went the opposite direction use Realtek but disabled nvidia sound devices.  But it seemed to work.

That's possible. I've had issues with RealTek in the past, and I don't use Nvidia audio either. Since the monitor i'm using is actually a TV, the audio is playing directly from its own internal driver...basically cut out the middle man.

I have both and I don't have the issue.

I had it for months before downgrading Windows 11 from 24H2 to 23H2. With this operation the sound stutters instantly ceased. To be noted that this issue affected FS2024 ONLY.

2 days ago I reinstalled 24H2 and the problem is no longer there.

I stopped trying to understand the root cause, MS itself has no idea at this point.

Well coincidently I did a flight in the Cessna 414 from Oklahoma City to New Orleans, and sure enough, massive stuttering and sound issues.   Happened on the ground, take-off, approach and landing. So doesn't seem to be attributed to my sound drivers and/or devices.

So while in cruise (when the sim was running fine), I just did some research and read comments here and went into BIOS to turn off XMP.

Low and behold, it was already disabled.  I was like weird, I didn't disable it (must be default setting for MSI Z790 Ace).  Well why don't I enable it.   I also tested my RAM with AIDA64 before and after doing so.

After enabling XMP the Ram numbers were a bit better and faster.

Powered up MSFS and ran the same flight.  It ran perfectly, no stutters, no crackling sounds, and I was getting insanely good FPS (120 FPS on the ground, which is usually unheard of for me, often time 15-30, even with a 5080.)

Decided to enter career mode, as it has frequently given me the stuttering sound issues.   Sure enough, sim ran smoothly.

I have 64 GB of G.SKILL Trident Z5 RGB Series DDR5 RAM (2x32GB) 6400MT.

So for now running smoothly, and interesting as some have fixed their issues by disabling. I enabled and it seemed to resolve the issue in career mode and free flight.

I also downgraded to 23H2 back in January and have not had the issue even one time since. I have always been on USB headset and tried removal of the Audio drivers with no permanent change until I rolled back to a pre December 23H2. I was getting it in both 2020 and 2024, I have updates paused and am worried that it will come back if 24H2 is installed again. I watch each of these posts both here and on MSFS forum waiting for the real fix. It is obviously something that was introduced around December by windows that does not play well with MSFS and current hardware.
